Two Michigan Democrats want to legally ban most people from carrying firearms in the state Capitol, a move prompted by protesters some of whom were armed packing the Statehouse earlier this year.

State Sens. Rosemary Bayer, D-Beverly Hills, and Dayna Polehanki, D-Livonia, say the legislation is necessary to ensure the Capitol remains a safe and welcoming work environment.

The only reason most people bring firearms into the Capitol is to intimidate and that is not how the states Capitol the peoples house is designed to work, nor should it continue to be permissible, Bayer said in a news release.

The bills, SB 1158 and SB 1159, would ban anyone from carrying a firearm openly or concealed in the state Capitol.

Ohioans will not have to worry about gun dealers being closed down based on an order for a public official if the Ohio House follows the Senate.

The Senate needed less than a month from introduction to passage of a bill that bars prohibiting the commercial sale of firearms and ammunition. It now goes to the House.

This has been a difficult year for Ohio, and while we continue to focus on slowing COVID-19, we must be mindful that we face these challenges before the backdrop of the peoples inalienable rights, Senate President Larry Obhof, R-Medina, said. Ensuring the right of Ohioans to defend themselves and feel secure is a vital part of our work.

The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, are the driving force behind the freedoms we enjoy today. If you take away one of our rights, we lose all of our rights. The Second Amendment was granted to us so we could protect our rights against a tyrannical government, and for people who threaten our families.

The safest places in America are the cities and states that have the fewest and least restrictions on owning weapons. The most violent cities are the ones that have the strictest gun laws.

The funds were raised via GiveSendGo, a page created after the teen allegedly shot people in the midst of riots, arson attempts, and unrest. His legal team has argued that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense.

The attorney for the teenage Kenosha double murder suspect Kyle Rittenhouse is planning to sue former Vice President Joe Biden on his behalf after he appeared to suggest the 17-year-old is a white supremacist on Twitter.

Lin Wood, the lawyer representing Rittenhouse, said he intends to sue the Democratic presidential nominee for libel after Biden posted a video about how President Donald Trump "refused to disavow white supremacists" during Tuesday's televised debate.

SCOTUS could use more skeptics like Amy Coney Barrett

Democrats worry that Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, an originalist and textualist who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia in the late 1990s, will emulate him if she is confirmed by the Senate. We could do a lot worse.

Although progressives often portrayed Scalia as an authoritarian ogre, he was a more faithful defender of First, Fourth and Sixth Amendment rights than some of his purportedly liberal colleagues on the Court. Barretts track record during three years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit suggests she also would frequently prove to be a friend of civil liberties.

Armed private citizens fatally shot 334 people last year, continuing a gradual upward trend in the United States while the number of justifiable homicides by police declined, and murders also dropped, including those involving firearms, according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for 2019.

The report was released Monday but was overshadowed by presidential politics, including the release of President Donald Trumps tax history.

A longtime supporter of gun control now finds herself on the other side of the aisle.

As recently as summer 2019, Ermiya Fanaeian was a vocal activist organizing and participating in gun control rallies sponsored by March for our Lives and Moms Demand Action.

Now, Fanaeian owns an AR-15.

I never thought I would own a gun, Fanaeian said. I was completely against gun ownership in any sense.

A smaller than usual crowd of a few hundred people rallied for gun rights on the steps of Pennsylvania's Capitol on Tuesday, an annual event that also was attended by a few dozen state lawmakers.

The Rally to Protect Your Right to Keep and Bear Arms constituted a pep rally, provided an update on the gun lobby's legislative efforts and opposition, and gave those present an opportunity to target Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf and other political opponents.

The pro-gun group also believes that AR-15s, military-grade weapons frequently used in mass shootings throughout the country, are acceptable weapons to keep in homes as a form of self-defense. The group has idly stood by claiming that "guns are not the problem" whenever the next Parkland or Las Vegas or Pulse happens. And when it's not attacking gun violence survivors on Twitter, the organization is frequently bullying groups like Moms Demand Action and March for Our Lives. Now, after years of false rhetoric and vicious attacks, the gun rights advocacy group may finally see the end of day, thanks to Attorney General of New York Letitia James.

Billionaire and failed Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg thought it would be easy to drop millions into Texas to buy more congressional seats for gun control. He underestimated Texans love for their Second Amendment and U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) is leading the charge to block his gun-grabbing efforts. Hes bringing a few friends to the fight too.

In a new joint campaign ad, the former Navy SEAL recruits a few fellow veterans looking to oust incumbent Democrats on Nov. 3. Bloomberg spent millions to flip the Virginia state legislature in 2019 to pass more gun control, and believing he can tip the scales in other states hes already pledged more than one hundred million this election cycle for more...

ts been two years since Walt Madsen started a militia in the north woods of Price County. Since then, hes watched the ranks of fellow patriots swell.

Two years ago, there were no militias, he said. Now you have one here in Price County, theres one in Oconto County, theres one in Green Bay, one down in Eau Claire starting up.

Across the nation and in Wisconsin, the militia movement is flourishing, fueled by outrage over stay-at-home orders, mask mandates and public unrest. In increasing numbers, armed militia members and vigilantes have inserted themselves into highly charged confrontations between protesters and police, with sometimes violent consequences.

By a similar twisted logic, Anti-Trump Nation is dangerous. Hence, says Trump, the armed teenager who killed two in Kenosha, Wisconsin acted in "self-defense," yet the suspected killer of a right-winger in Portland deserved the "retribution" he got when federal marshals gunned him down.

According to police, detectives spent 20 hours collecting video evidence as well as witness testimonies related to the incident. They determined a 25-year-old was involved in the altercation. He voluntarily came to the department to be interviewed and claimed self-defense.

Through interviews, officers determined he was driving with Luis Silva, 23, of Florida, as a passenger. When he pulled into the gas station, he says Silva demanded money from him. After refusing, he and Silva both exited the vehicle. Fearing for his safety, he says he struck Silva with a knife.

I call this an injustice because Rittenhouse is almost certainly not a flight risk or an ongoing danger to his community, so incarcerating him before trial violates the principle of innocent unless proven guilty. Also because the case for his innocence on grounds that he allegedly shot those three people in self-defense appears unusually strong.

Yes, Rittenhouse is a gun-totin' Trump supporter, not my favorite kind of person. But considerable video evidence from that evening shows that the shooter, allegedly Rittenhouse, fired only when attackers put him in reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm.

As detectives await a forensic analysis of the evidence, and a report from the medical examiners office, its emerging as yet another case complicated by Floridas Stand Your Ground self-defense law. Three years ago, the already controversial law was changed, forcing prosecutors to shoulder the legal burden to prove someone did not act in self-defense.

Two years after Jason Dames was jailed for fatally shooting a man at a Fort Pierce restaurant, a judge threw out his case after ruling the killing was justified under the states stand your ground law.

Dames, 33, was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm in connection with the Sept. 1, 2018 homicide of Jackie McMiller, 38, of Fort Pierce, which records show occurred at a restaurant at the southwest corner of North 25th Street and Avenue D in Fort Pierce.

The early days of the COVID-19 crisis were marked by widespread shortages of consumer goods like toilet paper, produce and beef. While many of those products are once again available on store shelves, the firearms industry has seen a prolonged shortage of both weapons and ammunition, fueled not only by concerns over COVID-19, but also ongoing political uncertainty and protests over police violence against Black people. Gun store owners and their customers are feeling the effects of decreased supply and increased demand.
