An amended bill that would allow Ohioans to carry concealed weapons isn't likely to satisfy gun-rights advocates or anti-gun groups.

Immediately after the substitute House Bill 274 was introduced...it came under attack from both sides.

Most recent changes include shortening the time an applicant has to be an Ohio resident to 45 days from 60 and prohibiting carrying concealed weapons in bars, except for police and prison guards who aren't consuming alcohol.

An assistant U.S. attorney was shot at his Queen Anne home late last night and died early this morning in what is being described as a "hit."

Federal investigators and Seattle PD are trying to determine a motive for the shooting death of Tom Wales, 49, but two federal sources said the case has all the hallmarks of a deliberate hit.
Wales, who also was board president of the Washington Cease Fire, a group working to end gun violence, worked in the U.S. attorney's fraud investigation unit.

A manhunt was under way for five inmates who escaped from their jail cells early Friday, leaving their bunks stuffed with linens. The five were discovered missing from the Grayson County Jail during a walkthrough inspection at about 1:45 a.m. Friday, said Sheriff's Lt. David Hawley. All five also have been accused or convicted of serious crimes. Be on the lookout if you live in the area.

The United Nations special representative in Sierra Leone says the stalled disarmament programme aimed at securing an end to more than a decade of fighting is to resume on Saturday.

They had expressed concern about some of the local arrangements for the surrender of weapons, and asked for security guarantees for their supporters.

British troops are also in Sierra Leone training soldiers and helping the government build a professional army.

A Seattle doctor caught with a gun in a carry-on bag at a Seattle-Tacoma International Airport security checkpoint was cited yesterday for not having a concealed-weapon permit.

In a separate case, a woman who did have a permit was stopped for having a small, two-shot pistol in a carry-on bag that she tried to take through a checkpoint. She was allowed to have her gun wrapped as checked baggage.

Possible charges pending.

Michael T. Barnes, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, called the death "a terrible loss to our movement." "Although we do not yet know the motives for the shooting, we are angered by the murder of this true visionary," Barnes said in a statement. Between being a US Attorney and a gun control leader, he had plenty of foes.

Shooters blew away images of Osama bin Laden's head at a firing range as John Augustus scanned a case of Glocks and thought about self-defense if terrorists strike again.

Firearms retailers across the nation say Augustus fits the profile of the new gun buyer in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Many are professionals who have never owned a weapon, but want extra protection in the case of another attack.

"They seem to be well-educated and well-meaning people."

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 has been awarded jointly to the United Nations and its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, based in Oslo, said the centenary award had been given to the U.N. and 63-year-old Annan for their work to build peace throughout the world. Annan said the news was "wonderful" and a great recognition for the world body and its staff.

Police on Thursday charged a 20-year-old man with six felony counts of armed robbery stemming from two violent Oakland Park incidents that occurred in the past month.

During the second robbery, police said, the husband -- age 47 -- managed to retrieve his 9mm handgun from an office, shooting Smith in the left foot. Police said Smith escaped, jumping into the same car driven by a male.

British Airways is considering equipping its pilots with stun guns and placing sky marshals on flights rather than arming pilots with guns or knives. The airline said it has ruled out arming its flight crew with guns or knives because the weapons "may serve only to arm an unarmed intruder." Leave it to the Brits to prevent self-defense by people armed with flying bombs.

Citizens in Bosnia have surrendered thousands of weapons so far this year in a program that offers amnesty in return for surrendered weapons, a NATO official said Thursday.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 2,650 small arms and 567,790 rounds of ammunition have been collected in the NATO-led program...

Reports from the United States of accidental deaths caused by children playing with guns have further contributed to a widespread fear of keeping weapons in the home.

Police in Liverpool are stepping up armed patrols after a man was shot dead and a boy injured.

Tony Lawler, 45, was killed in front of his mother during a trip to the shops. An 11-year-old boy, not connected to Mr Lawler, was hit in the leg by a stray bullet.

Armed response vehicles and more police officers would be deployed in the city, he said. But he denied Liverpool was heading back to the "gun law" days of May 1995, which saw a spate of shootings.

James W. Mullins, 56, was sentenced Friday to six months in jail after a jury found him guilty in September of possessing a weapon in a federal facility.

The Vietnam War veteran was arrested in May for carrying a Glock 9mm semiautomatic pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets on the grounds of the VA hospital in April.

Authorities have said the Bronze Star recipient is dangerous because he has post-traumatic stress disorder from combat duty in Vietnam.

Letter writer Arthur Hayhoe asks a lot of questions but delivers no substance. He should be answering questions such as his connection in the Sarah Brady group, how his organization is funded, and how is the money spent?

Another question he should answer is whether he is paid for his anti-gun efforts and, if so, how much?

He has said that the Second Amendment and the Minutemen were a myth. I suggest he get a lesson in history.

Eight heavily-armed pirates had boarded the Bolivian-registered boat...

"I heard weapons cocked outside my cabin door," said Mr Bailey, 52. "I opened the door and saw this man with an AK47 pointed at me. He was pulling the trigger and trying to fire but it had jammed. If the weapon had not jammed then I would have been killed."

Mr Bailey said he fired a pump action shotgun at the raider and blasted another 17 rounds at the other offenders who dived into the water to escape.

A Plano East Senior High School senior who died Saturday night after accidentally shooting himself in Dallas thought the gun was unloaded, according to Dallas Police Department reports. "The witnesses saw him playing with the gun like it was a toy," said Dallas Police Sgt. Ross Salverino. "He pointed the pistol at himself, goofing off supposedly, and the gun went off."

A St. Clair County man continues to face charges for illegally possessing the murder weapon in a Warren cop's death, but not for the slaying itself.

Everyone involved in the case agrees Walker didn't literally "possess" the gun when Wouters died -- he wasn't anywhere near the fatal gun exchange with Lleka at a Warren jail booking area. Walker's the legally registered owner of the gun.

Looks like the PD needs to pin blame somewhere, and this guy is the easy target.

Detectives are seeking information about a shooting early Wednesday, when a man fired at three intruders, killing one and wounding two.

All three intruders had arrest warrants pending at the time of the shooting, Wideman said. The men were believed to reside in Hampton, but police did not have addresses where they could serve the warrants, he said.

Police have not identified the shooter because, at this point, he is considered a victim who fired in self-defense.

"We can't go out and prevent rapes," said Sheriff's Cmdr. Keith Parks, who serves as Thousand Oaks' police chief. This comes in a report about how some crimes have gone down in areas of California, but that forcible rapes are still happening, indeed. A gun in a woman's hands is one hell of a deterrent. Gutless cops know that, but they don't want to say it for fear of losing a pension.

Are we going to ban hammers, too?

A Hagerstown man was sentenced Tuesday by Washington County Circuit Judge Don Beachley to six years in prison for an April hammer attack.

The victim told police he had been drinking with Britti when they got into an argument, court records said. Britti attacked the victim twice with a hammer and was thwarted, but doors and walls were damaged, court records said.

Britti apologized to the victim in the hammer attack and to the court.

OSAMA bin Laden's terror network has put a $100,000 bounty on the capture of any American soldier in Afghanistan.

The al-Qaeda network, which is the target of the United States war on terrorism, also will pay $6000 for every captured US military uniform and $3000 for every American gun.

The bounty was offered after the fifth day of air strikes on Afghanistan, which have been guided by US special forces behind enemy lines.

KABA NOTE: Bin Laden knows just how effective guns are against one's enemies. How come the Brady Bunch still don't get it?

Loose moose finally captured in subdivision

It was the same young moose that charged a mountain biker in nearby Zimmerman Park only the night before.

In that incident, the man dropped his bike and fled as the moose stomped on the two-wheeler. The park was closed to prevent any more confrontations.

With the moose so far from its natural habitat, aggressive and running through neighborhoods, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks was out in force to capture and transport the animal away from town.
