Over the weekend, the Second Amendment Foundation's (SAF) Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) convened in Fort Mitchell, KY. With eight hundred pre-registered attendees, this was the largest SAF event ever. From the buttons, bumper stickers, and familiar faces, it was clear that a sizable chunk of the morning's record figure could be attributed to interest in Congressman and Republican Presidential Candidate Ron Paul. |

In his letter, Mr. Franklin presents a litany of recent crimes and leads the reader to conclude that in each case, the criminal bought the gun in a private sale.
Banning private sales will only have an effect on legal gun owners and will not have any effect on criminals getting guns to commit crimes.
Criminals don't care about gun laws -- or any laws, for that matter.
In fact, when polled, criminals consistently voice that what they fear is armed victims. |

In 2010, criminals can easily switch to revolvers; or to brute force, or multiple assailants, or sawed off shotguns, or older guns, or drive-by shootings as they usually do anyway, thereby furnishing police with no more leads than before. This is more likely, actually, to be more of a dead-end as the net result is more of wiping out sales of new semi-automatic handguns. How does this trace crime when no one buys the things? With no guns bought, there are none to be stolen from owners. This is gun control without crime control. |

We're talking Public Trust and Hiding the Ball - In previous editions of Good For The Country, I mentioned how wrongful death lawsuits may play an important role in reclaiming the sovereignty of the adult students murdered on a campus which had no power to stop a shooter and which frustrates the target from acting in self-defense. This would serve the sovereignty of all. Yes, adult students submit to the rules of the campus or go elsewhere, I know, but this involves a reasonable expectation of a high degree of trust that the administration not only has student interests at heart, but also knows what in the world they are doing. Ignoring student input on a right is not fulfilling this. |

The state Board of Public Safety Standards and Training has sent Giusto a letter that amounts to a formal indictment, commencing proceedings that could strip the sheriff of his badge and throw into question his continued tenure as a top county elected official.
The board will consider whether Giusto, once a driver for former Gov. Neil Goldschmidt, lied about when he first heard about Goldschmidts statutory rape of a 14-year-old when he was mayor of Portland, according to the agencys Oct. 5 letter to Giusto (see link below). The board also will decide whether Giusto lied to reporters about his role in a controversy involving then-Multnomah County Crime Commission Chairman Jim Jeddeloh, including when Giusto first began dating Jed |

Maybe the NRA was right. The gun owners' group has been vilified for years by urban leaders and liberal policymakers for its slogan, "Guns don't kill people, people do." But as the continuing toll of violence in Boston attests - most recently, the horrific slaying of 13-year-old Steve Odom, the unintended target of a fusillade of bullets let loose on his Dorchester street - it is not simply the easy access to guns that is behind the growing body count. It is also the shockingly everyday willingness to use them. |

Results of a recent gang sweep in the Spokane-area were greatly exaggerated, officials acknowledged Thursday.
And for nearly two weeks they have resisted efforts to set the record straight.
The news that 77 "violent gang members and associates" had been arrested was big news with Spokane media on Oct. 1, and the figure has become a part of the mayoral campaign.
But the reality is, about 35 people were booked into Spokane County Jail during the three-day operation. Some of them have had no gang affiliation, and all but 10 have been released from jail.
Only one gun was seized.
"I guess he may have taken some liberties with how those numbers were represented," said Steve Lowhurst, Spokane special agent in charge for the ATF. |

The aftermath of the gun scare on the Danville Community College campus has administrators reviewing the schools emergency response tactics.
"We handled it reasonably well, but we can improve," DCC President Carlyle Ramsey said.
Ramsey said that a variety of things were discussed at the meeting, including what would constitute a lockdown situation in the future.
One topic debated was a way to identify students and faculty members on the campus. It was suggested that students and staff should wear nametags while on campus, an idea that had come up before.
"I think everyone admitted that we learned from the situation," Ramsey said. "This is not the way you want to learn it though." |

The crime prevention strategies announced by Gov. Jon Corzine and state Attorney General Anne Milgram this week may seem like a velvet-glove approach to the violence in our cities. But the iron fist is coming: Anne Milgram wants prison time for anyone caught with an illegal gun in New Jersey. "Our gun laws have to be tougher," she said. "To me, anybody caught with an illegal gun should go to jail, whether that gun is used in a crime or not." Milgram told The Star-Ledger of her plans at the Newark Boys & Girls Club Wednesday. |

"...In the Anglo-American United States, of the two parts of this system, neither the one nor the other will you see. No prosecution can there have place, for anything written against the government, or any of its functionaries as such. No restriction whatever is there on public meetings . . . Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law cutting-edge legislation that will provide police with an important new tool in solving gun crimes and apprehending armed criminals and gang members. AB 1471 passed both the Assembly last spring and the State Senate last month. "We applaud Gov. Schwarzenegger for taking a bold step to solve gun murders in California. This ground-breaking law gives police officers a powerful tool to apprehend armed criminals and gang members before they strike again," said Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke. |

Danville Community College officials say that things will be back to normal today after the campus was shut down Thursday afternoon because of a gun scare.
All classes and activities beginning after 2 p.m. Thursday were cancelled. School leaders said they chose to err on the side of caution when making their decision to close down the campus for the remainder of the day.
The eventful day began at about noon when one of the students saw someone walking up the street with what appeared to be a gun tucked into his pants. The student then dialed 911 and alerted the authorities.
The alleged gunman is described as a black male in his early 20s of average build and height. |

Theyre called girls with guns, women with weapons, females with firearm, babes with bullets and there are probably others. But whatever the alliterative phrase, its a case of what is usually thought of as the gentle gender and a developing relationship with packing hardware. Sandy Froman is woman who might be called slight in stature. Despite her diminutive size, beach bullies dont kick sand in her face because the former president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) carries a gun with her whenever legally allowed to do so. |

A Fort Bend County homeowner fought back when he found burglars in his home.
"You know there's something about when you hear a pump shotgun click," said Nathaniel Brooks. "It makes everybody think twice."
"You are trying to steal something out of my garage," Brooks recalled telling the robbers. "You in my garage so you have no rights now. This is my house."
And I walked out of the house and I went around and confronted those guys on the side of the house," he said. "So, I aimed at him and said, 'You sneeze, you're dead man.' And I called the other guy out of the garage. |
