Four months after a temporary restraining order was issued to block Deerfield, Ill., from banning what council members termed assault weapons, the sides were back in court making their arguments for a more lasting decision. Guns Save Life, the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) and other plaintiffs were asking for a preliminary injunction against the town, saying it overstepped the states preemption law. The Second Amendment groups are challenging Deerfields action in two lawsuits. Gun owner John William Wombacher III and Guns Save Life teamed up to file one, and that one has the NRAs backing. A second challenge was filed by the ISRA, the Second Amendment Foundation and gun owner Daniel Easterday. |

Since the Gathering Place opened last month, some have criticized the park's strictly enforced rule not to allow guns. Today. a group rallying for a change to the law was met with protesters on the other side of the issue. It doesnt matter if it's raining, sunny or whatever liberty doesnt change does it," said Don Spencer. That liberty being the second amendment, of course. |

Flying under the radar is a national movement to amend the Constitution to overturn the 2010 Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. FEC, which held political spending by corporations or unions a form of protected free speech. The conservative Citizens United nonprofit organization wanted to advertise an anti-Hillary Clinton film on television, but the Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruled that this violated the McCain-Feingold Act of 2002.

A total of 104 city and county measures are on ballots across the state Nov. 6. A total of 139 bears were killed during the six days of New Jersey's annual black bear hunt, a steep drop as anticipated from last year's total following restrictions imposed by the governor. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy this year barred bear hunting on state-owned lands, removing roughly 40 percent of the lands where bears were hunted over the past eight years. Hunting was still allowed on land owned by the federal government, counties, municipalities or private properties.

"I just dont understand how shooting an animal can bring you so much pleasure. Why not shoot at a range? Youre still shooting something. Whether youve hunted for a few short years or for decades, you have no doubt heard these types of things. And although shooting guns is loads of fun, true hunters know the pleasures found in passionate hunting. Hunting is so much more than just simply shooting an animal. Its about the months spent preparing your land, and the time spent scouting and hanging trail cameras. Its about how you use every available hour before and after workor in my case, schoolto hunt the early seasons. Its something you talk about all year. Its something that keeps you up all night. Thats what hunting really is. |

When it comes to examining a potential self-defense gun like the Ruger Officer-Style SR1911, first and foremost, it must be reliable. While we can argue over caliber, magazine capacity or action type, the gun has to go bang every single time when lives are at stake. Im sometimes asked how reliable I expect my pistols to be, usually framed in questions about 10,000-round tests and the like. Folks are surprised when I tell them my defensive pistol must absolutely go bang only until it has fired all the ammunition in it and on my belt. After that, its a club and further reliability is a non-issue. |

Hunting customs vary, sometimes considerably, across this great land of ours. In some cases its a result of local conditions long-range optics for spot-and-stalk hunting will never be too popular in the north woods of Maine. In others its simply local convention or tradition. Some methods of pursuit or preferred species seem downright strange to us, but folks from away might look at us just as oddly. |

Jodie Provost and her husband, Tom, first hunted elk with muzzle loaders four years ago in Colorado. We got hooked and have been applying for permits in Colorado ever since, she said. This year, Jodie was drawn for an elk permit in northwestern Minnesota. The zone in which they applied only had two bull permits available, and the other party also was able to harvest a bull elk. |

A Newport woman had a Mason jar of green juice on the table next to her National Rifle Association book; she was a few minutes late to the gun course at the Newport Rifle Club because she had stopped by a farmers market on her way in. She practices yoga, and she wanted to learn how to safely shoot a firearm. If I ever had to know how to use a gun and I didnt know, that would be unfortunate, the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said on Saturday during a seven-hour women-only NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course. |

Governors races matter a lot to Second Amendment supporters. Governors can be the last line of defense against passage of legislation that places onerous burdens on our Second Amendment rights. They have the ability to set the tone for how the Second Amendment is discussed in a given state. In addition, governorships have been a launching pad for presidential campaigns. Governors also have the power to make appointments to fill vacant seats for their state in the United States Senate. So, governors have a national impact. |
