This is our first Reply to Mr. Dave Kopel's smear campaign on National Review Online. It's posted here to take comments from people who frequent KeepAndBearArms.com -- especially from members and supporters of the Silveira v. Lockyer true Second Amendment lawsuit.
Before you read it (if you haven't already read it and shared it with your contacts), do please recall that Mr. Kopel said the Silveira suit is "entirely funded by nave gun owners," which, if you are a supporter, means you. |

"South Africa is the world's bloodiest nation, The Economist notes, with a shocking 114.8 murders for each 100,000 people, compared to only six in the U.S. and two in Japan, according to Interpol."
"More than 21,000 South Africans were killed last year, 'worse than some war zones.' "
"Other countries that outkilled the U.S. on Interpol's list aren't a surprise: Brazil, Russia, Botswana, Zambia, Angola."
"But here's one that might startle you: Sweden, supposedly the land of granola-munching socialist peaceniks, had 10 murders for every 100,000 people. Yes, Sweden is branching out and is no longer just Suicide Central." |

"Our president, who uses the moniker of a compassionate conservative, is in the process of betraying each category of his conservative base. For example, gun-owners got a rude awakening in April when President Bush announced that he not only would renew the expiring Assault Weapons Ban but also expand the ban to cover more types of firearms. Even by the government's own studies, the ban has had no impact on the criminal use of firearms. Its sole impact and purpose is to ban honest citizens from owning firearms of their own choosing. Gun owners should have immediately realized that they were betrayed when President Bush didn't terminate the numerous executive orders that ban the importation and manufacture of many makes of firearms, something that only takes his signature to do. Usually when a politician sells out his constituents, he creates a commission to do the dirty work. Since gun control only benefits the criminals who would prey upon their disarmed victims, a commission wouldn't provide Bush the necessary political cover to advance his extreme gun-ban goals. So much for the gun owners who thought a Bush presidency would restore their 2nd Amendment freedoms." |

"The $15,000 price tag for a new gun prohibition policy in the Independence School District caused some board members to fire a few rounds rhetorically speaking at state lawmakers who recently overrode Gov. Bob Holden's veto of the concealed handgun legislation."
"The school board on Tuesday approved the new policy, which forbids carrying guns and other weapons on school property or at any school function. Signs indicating the new policy will account for much of the implementation cost."
"That extra $15,000 might be small change during a typical year, but the school district is facing a budget that has seen millions in state aid shaved from it while Republican lawmakers refused to consider new revenue streams proposed by Holden."

"The real weapons of mass destruction are not the ones being sought by David Kay in Iraq. To millions of people across the world they are the small arms and light weapons that wreak havoc and cause significant loss of life every day. As UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said: 'The death toll from small arms dwarfs that of all other weapons systems - and in most years greatly exceeds the toll of the atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In terms of the carnage they cause, small arms, indeed, could be described as 'weapons of mass destruction.' Yet there is still no global non-proliferation regime to limit their spread.' "
------- What Mr. Annan fails to mention is that governments killed 170 million of their unarmed civilians in the 20th century, and small arms defend over 2 million lives per year in the US alone. |

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Police in Fairfax County want to find a gun that an officer put on top of his car and accidentally drove off without it.
Investigators said the gun was lost at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday as the officer was preparing to leave the West Springfield District Station.
The officer placed several belongings on top of his car after his shift ended. One of the belongings, a Sig Sauer P229 in a leather holster, was accidentally left on the car when the officer drove away.
The officer realized the gun was missing a short time later and pulled over. However, the gun was no longer on the roof, and the gun was not found during a search of the area.
Police hope the person who picked up the gun will bring it back to police. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information about the gun.
Anyone with a tip can call Fairfax Count Crime Solvers at (703) 691-8888.
------- So if the gun is used in a crime, will the cop be charged the way a civilian might? |

[Original Title: Parks-Rec weighs anti-gun options]
"The injunction against Missouri's new concealed carry law has bought local parks officials some time to determine how they will keep firearms out of city recreation facilities."
"The Parks and Recreation Commission met Monday to discuss the issue, but took no formal action because of a St. Louis Circuit Court judge's decision on Friday to temporarily block the law from taking effect Saturday."
"The commission had been slated to act on a policy that would endorse the related council bill, designate gated parks facilities -- such as tennis courts and the Washington Park Ice Arena -- as amusement parks, and declare open picnic pavilions to be buildings. These measures would bring the local ordinance more closely into line with the provisions of the state statute, said Bill Lockwood, director of the Parks and Recreation Department." |
