I always have a handgun close at hand, however, there is also a shotgun or two handy and my latest choice is the new Winchester 12-gauge pump shotgun, the SXP Marine Defender. The SXP stands for Super-X Pump. This latest Winchester pump shotgun is produced in Istanbul and imported by Browning.
The name does not refer to it being used by the United States Marines but rather being able to be carried on a boat without worrying about rust. The main components are chosen for this with the buttstock and forearm being a black synthetic, the receiver a black coated alloy and the barrel and magazine tube finished in a matte hard chrome as is the interior of the barrel. |

"Nearly two years later, a judge found earlier this month that Jones, now 25, had a right to kill Lee under the S.C. Protection of Persons and Property Act, which allows people in certain situations to use force when faced with serious injury," Knapp writes. But the prosecutors are planning to fight the decision because, they argue, "stand your ground" laws should not cover domestic violence situations.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is scheduled to testify at a hearing on a bill that would allow District of Columbia residents and visitors to get concealed handgun permits for the first time in nearly 40 years.
The bill has widespread support from the District's political leaders, and Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray has already signed a temporary version. But Thursday marks the first public hearing on the bill. Advocates for gun rights and gun control are also scheduled to testify. |

While plenty of his fellow Democrats are pushing for legislation making it harder for law-abiding Americans to own and carry firearms, Pennsylvania state Rep. Marty Flynn recently found out how important proper self-defense can be.
The Associated Press reported that Flynn, a former prison guard, was walking near the state Capitol building late Tuesday evening when he and another Democrat legislator were approached by a pair of men demanding their wallets. While the events that followed are still being investigated, it is clear that Flynn produced his gun and exchanged fire with at least one armed suspect.

The survey also suggested mixed feelings on firearm regulation.
Around 55 percent favored restricting firearms and 34 percent said the state shouldnt consider stricter laws.
Slightly more Floridians, nonetheless, were accepting of citizens using firearms in self-defense. Thirty-one percent thought the state should repeal the Stand Your Ground Law and 41 supported the right to use deadly force against an imminent threat.
The law, a household name since the Trayvon Martin case, continues to be debated in the Florida Legislature. A panel is scheduled to meet in Orlando on Friday to discuss whether it should be changed. |

The Kirkland City Council has voted to take a side in a state-wide battle over two opposing state gun initiative.
At a special meeting Oct. 13, the council voted 6-1 in favor of a resolution expressing support for Initiative 594, while passing a separate resolution opposing Initiative 591.
If approved, I-594 would require background checks for all gun purchases and transfers in the state, though the initiative provides exemptions for gifts between immediate family members or for antiques. |

Democratic Senators Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mark Begich of Alaska split with their party last year to help Republicans stop a bill strengthening background checks for gun purchases.
Theyve gotten no help in return from the nations largest gun lobby.
With both lawmakers facing tough re-election fights, the National Rifle Association has spent $2.6 million supporting Pryors opponent and isnt endorsing Begich, whose opposition to the gun bill came months after 20 schoolchildren were shot dead. |

The so-called gun violence restraining order recently passed in California is a commonsense policy that balances the need for public health and doesn't tread on the rights of gun owners.
As a neurosurgeon and spine surgeon, I have had a front row seat to gun violence. Whether shot by someone else or self-inflicted, a bullet traveling through the brain and spine can cause extraordinary damage. You cant put a brain back together. If we do succeed at preserving a life, the victim of gun violence is often left with tragic neurologic deficits such as paralysis, speech problems and cognitive issues. |

We live in a world where the entertainment media and the news media alike have demonized the firearm as a frightening, high-efficiency killing machine. A myth has arisen that I call hierarchy of lethality. It is the false belief that the firearm represents the nuclear level of hand-held weaponry, and is somehow more lethal than other deadly weapons.
The general public sees the knife as something less: after all, theyll open their mail in the morning with something very much like your opponents knife, and will slice the roast at dinner tonight with something virtually identical to the blade your opponent wields. |

Democrat Sens. Mark Pryor and Mark Begich, both locked in a tight reelection race with their conservative rivals, are pivoting away from the anti-gun rhetoric currently popular in their party.
According to Bloomberg, the two legislators sided with Republicans in opposing a bill last year that would have made it more difficult to obtain a gun. The outlet, founded by former New York mayor and outspoken gun rights opponent Michael Bloomberg, noted the fact that pro-gun organizations are not rewarding the Democrats for their vote.
We have no doubt that if Pryor and Begich were reelected, Gun Owners of America Legislative Counsel Mike Hammond said, they would be horrible. |

Federal prosecutors have dismissed a misdemeanor charge filed against a 57-year-old Texas man who shot at a grizzly bear that was charging him on a trail in Glacier National Park.
Attorney Jason T. Holden of Great Falls tells the Missoulian the U.S. Attorneys Office was right to dismiss the charge of illegally discharging a firearm in a national park because his client was defending himself. He says Brian D. Murphy didnt fire his gun until after he tried pepper spray. |

Marion Hammer, former NRA president and executive director of the Unified
Sportsmen of Florida, said it was "not only ludicrous, it is comical for anyone to claim the League of Women Voters is not anti-gun."
"Show me one time, just one time that they have ever done anything to support protection of Second Amendment rights, self-defense rights of the rights of law abiding gun owners," Hammer said Wednesday. "Show me one time that the Florida League of Women Voters has ever spent any of their money on programs to protect children from gun accidents." |

The state Senate approved a measure late Wednesday that would give gun groups -- including the National Rifle Association -- standing in court to sue municipalities that enact their own gun laws.
The amendment, which passed 32-16, has its origins in a legal battle between the city of Philadelphia and the NRA, which sued over gun control ordinances more restrictive than state law.
The courts struck down several of the city's gun ordinances, but upheld mandatory reporting of lost and stolen weapons. Some 30 other cities, townships and boroughs followed suit, passing lost and stolen weapons reporting ordinances. |

Its not just that Utah State University reported Tuesday that several staff members had received an anonymous threat promising the deadliest school shooting in American history if a planned Wednesday event featuring Feminist Frequencys Anita Sarkeesian went forward. Its not just that Sarkeesian, along with several women in the gaming and tech world, has been facing death threats and harassment for years now. No, its about the response. Its about living in a country in which the right to carry around a weapon takes priority over the privilege of being able to stand up in a crowd and not worry about being murdered. |

Since the State of Illinois passed a controversial Concealed Carry Weapons permit law last year, a flood of African American applicants have found themselves denied even though they are qualified to receive the permits according to the prerequisites of the law. After hundreds of such residents took a firearms training course, paid an array of fees, and submitted fingerprints for a background check that were then ultimately passed, African American applicants have been receiving notices earlier this year that a special review board has denied their applications for concealed carry licenses. |

But Murthy, like so many in his field, also sees a connection between gun violence and public health, which meant Republicans and the NRA decided to destroy his nomination. Senate Democrats could have confirmed him anyway, but red-state Dems got election-year jitters, which means. at least for now, Murthy has been temporarily derailed and the Surgeon Generals office is empty during a public-health scare. |

The Army Corps of Engineers must let U.S. citizens carry guns on property it manages, including hydroelectric dams and recreation areas around them, a federal judge ruled.
Two people, from Idaho and Utah, sued the Army Corps of Engineers in August 2013, seeking declaratory judgment that they could carry guns on and around water projects and recreational areas managed by the Corps.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill said they could - that there is a difference between regulation of handguns and their outright ban.
Winmill granted plaintiffs Elizabeth Morris and Alan Baker's motion for summary judgment on Second Amendment grounds. |

While you were sleeping last night, the anti-gun forces were wide awake and hard at work.
The right to keep and bear arms has a lot of enemies. They come in the form of politicians, activists, and even law enforcement organizations like our own Florida Sheriffs Association.
Since 2011, Florida Carry has become a force to be reckoned with. In three short years, the organization has grown from two ex-military gun owners with an idea, to over twelve thousand members and supporters!!! But fighting in the courts and Tallahassee costs money, and we need more to expand the fight. Right now, we have several gun rights and preemption cases in various stages of progress. |

Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would. JOHN ADAMS |
