There is a popular idea that we should regulate firearms the way we regulate automobiles. Really? Lets see where that road leads. I wrote this for fun, but I was amazed at the ways we infringe on the right to bear arms.

-We can finally buy and sell our cars firearms across state lines.
-Each state and city now recognizes your drivers license license to carry concealed.
-You can rent a gun for the afternoon if your gun is in the shop.
-The city provides gun-storage locations free of charge in front of no-gun zones in order to attract customers to downtown. About time.
-A gun dealership can lease you a firearm on a five year payment plan.
(Continued)

Tell me what you think if we regulated firearms the way we regulate cars.

Have you noticed the shift in perceptions over the past few years about defensive ammunition choices?

Not so long ago, 9mm was considered the minimum caliber for defensive use, and a somewhat sad compromise at that.

A new student group at Arizona State University wants the right to carry guns and other weapons on campus.

Students for Self-Defense at ASU has created a petition to get rid of the ban on weapons on school grounds, specifically firearms, knives longer than 5 inches and mace, which are currently prohibited by the school. The online petition asks ASU President Michael Crow to change the policy, and currently has more than 300 signatures and an end goal of 500 names.

Montana Attorney General Tim Fox on Thursday said he disagrees with the Missoula city attorney over the legality of a proposed ordinance requiring background checks for firearms sold or transferred within the city.

Fox released his opinion via a one-sentence news release.

Two hours later, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Ryan Zinke, both Republicans, also released a joint statement urging the city to withdraw the ordinance.

While they support local control, they said, the ordinance presented a rare occasion to express their opposition to what they described as misguided legislation.

Gavin Newsom, the Lieutenant Governor of California, the state in which I not only reside, but have been a cop for the last 20 years, in the wake of the recent college campus shooting in Oregon, is proposing a new three part gun control law, exactly none of which would have had the least effect on the incident in Oregon, in any of the high notoriety incidents that liberals and other gun control proponents like to politicize in order to fuel the emotions of their logically impaired supporters, or on gun crime in general.

"I think the ramifications for gun stores are going to be huge," says Nik Clark, who heads the pro-gun group Wisconsin Carry. He expects the owners of Badger Guns to appeal the ruling. Yet he says even if the owners ultimately prevail, this weeks ruling will take a toll on gun stores.

"Between now and the time that the appeal is heard and decided -- which may be years -- businesses, if they're worried about their legal exposure, are going to need to adjust their practices immediately," Clark says.

Clark says some stores might now turn away customers who can legally buy guns.

In the last couple of weeks we have watched and listened to anti-gun messages blasted across America, assisted by the mainstream media.

Hillary Clinton compared the NRA and by inference its members, to negotiating with Iran or communists. As insulting as this reference is, it does give hope to gun owners. When Hillary was Secretary of State she got her clock cleaned by both of these groups witness to the situation in the Middle East.

While it may seem a waste of words even to discuss the 2016 Democratic Party Presidential candidates positions on the right of the people to keep and bear arms, some elucidation is in order.

We can zero in on the current strategies each of the five Democratic candidates would employ for undermining the Second Amendment were that person elected to the Office of President.

So Sen. Cornyn proposes strengthening background checks and incentivizing states to upload court orders of people found mentally incompetent or those sent to a psychiatric hospital.

It's the Mental Health and Safe Communities Act, introduced in August.

But 2016 is an election year, and can such a bill really pass a conservative Congress and tea partiers in the House?

It appears as though the U.S. Constitutions Second Amendment prohibitions on infringement to keep and bear arms would be under assault in a Clinton presidency, much like it has been under the Obama administration. Notably absent from Clintons response to the question was any reference on how to remove guns from the hands of terrorists and criminals, those most likely to break any gun laws enacted.

Yesterday saw gun control fanaticism on both coasts grabbing the spotlight, with Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe issuing an executive order on carry in some state government buildings, and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom announcing an initiative campaign to ban full-capacity magazines and require background checks to purchase ammunition.

Responding to McAuliffes move, Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, was blistering in his reaction. He noted on his Facebook page that, Virginia has never had a shooting in one of its government buildings, but Gov. McAuliffe wants to fix that by making them gun-free zones.

In response to a petition that he not infringe upon Second Amendment rights, the White House replied, President Obama strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. Gun rights advocates have long suspected the presidents position to be one of political convenience. Indeed, his flip-flopping on same-sex marriage came as no surprise to political pundits for they long believed that his initial opposition was calculated to maximize his electability. Shortly after the anti-Christian shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, the president reinforced those suspicions with the following comments:

State Rep. Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauna, is one Wisconsin legislator unmoved by a constituents plea to back off Campus Carry to make his workplace is safer.

Bad guys dont respect (a no guns allowed) sign, Steineke tweeted to Chuck Rybak, an associate professor of English at UW-Green Bay, in an exchange detailed by Rybak on his blog. Banning guns in campus buildings, so potential shooting victims cant carry them, makes you an easier target, Steineke wrote.

Maine's revised concealed carry law [text, PDF] went into effect Thursday and allows legal gun owners to carry concealed weapons without a permit. The law was passed by the Maine State Legislature [official website] and approved [legislative materials] by Governor Paul LePage [official website] in July. The law applies to people who are 21 or older or military members age 18 or older, and will likely effect current gun owners who no longer need to apply for a permit from the Maine State Police [official website] or attend safety classes in order to carry a concealed weapon.

Data from the National Crime Victimization Survey disclosed that in a five year period between 2007 and 2011, only 0.8 percent of individuals surveyed said they threatened or attacked with a firearm in self-defense. An FBI Uniform Crime report disclosed that of 270 justifiable homicides in 2013, only 23 involved a woman killing a man. Of those cases, a total of 13 or 56 percent involved a firearm.

Ed.: 0.8%--that is at least two million defensive gun uses over five years, based on an adult population of 250 million.

But, to obtain an unrestricted, concealed full carry handgun license in many jurisdictions, such as New York, there is a higher standard that an applicant must meet. It is not enough to show that good cause does not exist for denying a person the right to possess a handgun say merely for target practice or sport. The applicant must show that good cause does exist why that person should be permitted the right to carry a handgun, concealed, for the purpose of self-defense, in a public space that is to say outside of ones home or business. In other words, the applicant must show why some aspect of that persons life places that person in more serious danger than the average law-abiding American faces.

TX: Guns allowed on college campuses: Now what could be bad about that?

Fatal shootings on college campuses have been impossible to ignore.

Oct. 1 at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., a gunman killed nine people and himself, leaving nine others injured. On Friday at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., a shooting left one dead and three wounded. Later the same day, shots killed one and injured another at Texas Southern University in Houston.

Does this make allowing concealed weapons at Texas college campuses seem dumb or even wiser?

Do we really want shootouts in public places? Even well-trained law-enforcement professionals miss far more often than they hit their targets, injuring or killing bystanders. Think of what would happen if students whipped out guns in classrooms, or viewers in darkened theaters, or shoppers in a mall.

Is there any reasonable justification for military-style weapons in the hands of the public? Handguns or rifles for hunting or target shooting, maybe, but automatic or semiautomatic weapons?

It might be too early to call 2016 the year of the gun, but another year of gun debate in the Florida legislature wont be a stretch.

Three high profile pieces of legislation are expected to be at the forefront of policy making. One bill being considered would allow open carry for Floridians. The NRA says allowing a person to visibly show their gun protects concealed carry permit holders from getting arrested for accidental exposure of their weapon.
