Councilman Lyle K. Frehafer said the department has on hand "more than 3,000 rounds" of ammunition... "plus shotgun rounds."
"That's more than sufficient ammunition," Frehafer said. "I think we are overboard." He suggested some of the ammunition be returned, but Police Chief William F. Clark said it was needed.
Clark defended the purchase, saying that the department uses it for mandated qualifications with firearms - members must be able to hit what they shoot at - and for practice. |

Ridge said he is seeking better ways to inform the public and get average Americans more involved in protecting the nation. One idea is to rally Americans to perform community work such as volunteering at fire departments. |

The Bush administration has moved quickly since Sept. 11 to pay off two-thirds of the U.S. debt to the United Nations and to promote the UN's key role in fighting terrorism and building a future government in Afghanistan.

Phoenix police Officer Franklin Brown said the police department is retaliating against him for comments he made after he was involved in a shooting last year.
Brown was scheduled to receive the national "TOP COP" award this month for his actions during an apparent attack near Tolleson in July 2000.
However, the department recently voiced "concerns" about the incident, and the National Association of Police Organizations postponed the award until inconsistencies can be cleared up. |
