"The mental image of my 2-year-old niece hefting a gun in her cute little hands almost brings a smile to my face."

"No, not because shes a crack shot and I taught her everything she knows. Shes not, and I didn't -- yet."

"That scenario makes me happy in a way because of the rest of the picture: Her parents with her, carefully showing her proper use of and respect for a gun."

"I wasn't there, so I don't know how accurate that image might be -- maybe she never even touched the guns -- but I'm glad my sisters and brothers-in-law recently took their kids out to learn gun safety and do some harmless target shooting under close supervision." ...

... "In the wake of the recent wave of carnage, President George W. Bush, renowned moralist and global promoter of non-violence, quickly convened a summit on school safety. In parallel, right-wing talking heads quickly and deftly interspersed these shooting incidents with video footage of two girls in New Mexico brutally pummeling another girl on a school bus, casting all of these episodes as co-equal exhibits in a case against school violence and as occasion for yet another round of tirades against out-of-control youth. The president's summit, hailed by all who participated, provided much discussion on communication, 'intelligence' ... values and preparedness. Astoundingly, it mentioned nothing about guns." ...

"Still outside, Beth Greer had grabbed a gun from her car."

"'I heard a shot go off and, of course, I just knew he had killed Tommy. In an instant, he stepped back into the garage. One step in the garage, still with his gun pointed at me, and I just opened fire on him. I just shot, shot, shot, shot,' Beth Greer remembered."

"At the Harrison County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday, the Greers finally got to see the face behind the mask. To their surprise it was Bobby Hardy, a regular customer at their store in Gulfport. ..." ...

"All charges against the owner of a Denver bar accused of shooting a burglar should be dismissed under Colorado's 'Make My Day' law, a defense lawyer argued Tuesday."

"Christakes Christou was charged with first-degree assault after he shot Dwayne Stepp, who broke into Christou's Funky Buddha bar at 3:11 a.m. on Jan. 3."

"The question is whether Colorado's Make My Day law, which says the occupant of a dwelling has the right to shoot an intruder, applies to a business."

"Defense lawyer Larry Pozner claims it does because Christou sometimes spent the night at his bar."

"Denver prosecutor Dawn Weber, however, said the law, which specifically uses the word 'dwelling,' pertains only to homes." ...

"Although the Minnesota Student Association won't consider requesting a change to University policy for a few weeks, the proposal to lift the campus firearm ban will likely hit a dead-end even if it passes Forum."

"At Tuesday's MSA meeting, Forum members heard University President Bob Bruininks discuss ... the resolution that would ask the administration to change the Student Conduct Code to allow students to carry licensed handguns on campus."

"Bruininks made his distaste for the resolution apparent."

"'It won't be just a hard sell, I think it's a nonstarter with me,' he said. 'It raises the ante and prospects of conflicts and violence on our campus.'"

"Bruininks said the University does not have the 'kind of culture' that would support conceal and carry on campus." ...

It wasn't even a week before the school shooting in Lancaster County when Rep. Daryl Metcalfe vowed that no "liberal gun grabbing" legislation was going to be enacted in Pennsylvania and Rep. Dwight Evans reminded him and the rest of the legislators that nobody is immune to violence.

Not even little girls tucked away in a tiny one-room schoolhouse.

When did the Second Amendment mean any gun, any time, anywhere?

Therefore, it is absolutely necessary for us Alaskans not only to re-elect federal candidates who, like Don Young, have always staunchly defended the Second Amendment, but also to make sure that our next governor, state senators and representatives are on our side, not on the side of those who would ban guns and hunting." ...

"And accidentally kill himself."

"Tylib Bailey-Henderson's death this week is tragic and frustrating because it could have been so easily avoided."

"A simple, properly attached gun-trigger lock, and Tylib would still be alive -smiling, laughing, playing."

"But gun advocates and their legislative buddies can't envision that happy image. It appears a child's safety is not their concern."
