Reasonable people would assume membership in such an organization is a good thing. But, the attacks against Christensen and the 450 other mayors who are members have little to do with reasonableness.
The attacks are the work of the Institute for Legislative Action, the lobbying arm of the National Rifle Association, which sent postcards and e-mails to NRA members in cities with participating mayors accusing the coalition of trying to trample Second Amendment rights and to create new anti-gun laws.
The postcard said, It is critical that your mayor disassociate himself from this anti-gun group and you can do your part by contacting his office today and urging him to withdraw his MAIG membership. |

Gun control and its affect on the Northwoods economy also came up. Most of us believe in the right to bear arms, said Feingold. We didnt have that right in Wisconsin until I wrote legislation that called for those rights not just for hunting, but for self-defense. I wanted it to be an individual right and now it is.
I did vote for the Brady bill and against semi-automatic weapons, he continued, explaining the National Rifle Associations lack of support for him. The NRA has a rule: if you ever vote against them you get an F for life. But I believe in the right to bear arms, and I will oppose gun registration.

Thats our new slogan at ICarry.org and we aim to be the #1 right-to-carry resource for our two beloved holdout states.
If you dont already know, I live in Illinois. Ive been staying active for over 4 years to try to get the right to carry. Its been a long, tough battle. Ive even gotten doubtful at times myself, as I see many gun owners in Illinois and Wisconsin are.
I wanted to take a second to assure you that we will get concealed carry. I have a feeling it wont be very long either. Im thinking at least one state if not both will get it next year. Pretty bold statement, right? I try not to blow smoke up skirts, and its only been recently that I realized we were so close. |

NOT EVERY member of the National Rifle Association is a gun-toting survivalist with an ammo belt slung over his shoulder. Take it from Sandra Froman, who turns that image inside out.
She's a 5-foot- 2-inch, 60-year-old lawyer with degrees from Stanford and Harvard who practices business litigation in Tucson, Ariz. She's not only an NRA member, she's also a past president and a current board member.
Froman visited Orinda Country Club earlier this month at the invitation of the Lamorinda Republican Women's Club to speak on the importance of the Second Amendment, everyone's favorite constitutional lightning rod. |

The forum began with three candidates for governor, one of whom used a stand-in. Adam Andrzejewski was unable to attend because his three daughters were ill with the H1N1 flu. Filling in for him was Liz Eilers, who said Andrzejewski held the same values as she.
"Pro-life, pro-family, pro-Second Amendment. I made a clear choice to support Adam," she said. |

Congressman, Eric Cantor hosts the "Republican Roundup" every year. It's a chance for Virginians to meet state and local leaders. This year, it was also planned to get republicans energized for the upcoming election. However, left out were some of the GOP's most consistent supporters; gun owners. The event is held at the Innsbrook Pavilion, an anti-gun establishment.
President of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Philip VanCleave said republican leaders are taking advantage of their support by hosting the event at an anti-gun location. Members of the VCDL also proposed alternative location to the Virginia GOP, but, their requests were ignored. VanCleave said this is an infringement on their second amendment rights. |

Hired New York investigators crashed some Tennessee gun shows to make a point about federal and state laws, and it riled some politicians and proponents of unrestricted gun ownership.
Gubernatorial candidates U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey expressed outrage that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sent undercover investigators to shows in Tennessee, Ohio and Nevada, and found that unlicensed dealers were more likely than not to sell guns even when they had reason to believe the buyers could not pass a background check.
"Bloomberg and his anti-gun cronies should stay the heck out of Tn," Wamp, a Chattanooga Republican, posted on Twitter after news of the investigation came out. |

Bookworm asks this question and then provides the argument why Obama is in fact anti-American. ... He wants to alter the essence of America, and that essence is steeped in freedom and liberty. ... Here's but a portion:
...
He wants to take away the right to bear arms. He'll pay lip service to supporting the Second Amendment, but his fundamental goal is to use government to remove arms from individuals. I've never held a gun in my life, but I know that the Founders understood that, for individuals, their single biggest defense against an overreaching government, is the right to arm themselves. Statists never allow their citizens to bear arms. Indeed, the first thing the Nazis did was ban guns in citizen's hands. |

Politically powerful gun rights advocates strongly opposed De Leon's bill. Schwarzenegger heeded the advice of police chiefs in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Oakland and other cities instead, placing the interest of public safety ahead of the gun lobby.
The De Leon bill, the governor correctly concluded, appropriately balances public safety against the right to keep and bear arms. The type of record-keeping mandated in the new law is no more intrusive than similar laws governing pawnshops.
The bill reasonably regulates access to ammunition and improves public safety without placing undue burdens on law-abiding gun owners. It makes California safer.

Legislators in a representative democracy can follow their conscience or vote the wishes of their constituents when important issues are at stake. Or they can take their cues from people with guns.
Most likely a mix of motivations drove the Tennessee General Assembly's flurry of pro-gun legislation last spring.
After legislators decided to allow local governments to opt out of a measure that removed the ban on guns in parks and gave owners of restaurants that serve alcohol an opt-out provision as well, the results were mixed.
Some local governments decided to keep the ban; others decided to allow people with permits to pack pistols with their picnic supplies. Some restaurateurs posted no-weapons signs; others chose not to. |

"When we first met Darren Yancy, he was running for the 17th Texas Congressional District seat where he distinguished himself from his rivals by actually providing specific answers to the gun rights questionnaire. Still, some readers indicated dissatisfaction with two of his answers, specifically in regards to open carry and registration."
Saturday's Gun Rights Examiner column does two things: It changes my mind from being neutral on this individual to believing he is a good candidate. But also, importantly, it shows how some candidates are recognizing the importance of making sure they clearly state their case for the right to keep and bear arms. |

In response to the refusal of all 3 Democratic candidates for state wide office in Virginia to fill out their gun rights survey, the Virginia Citizens Defense League's Political Action Committee (VCDL PAC) has endorsed all 3 Republican candidates. In its release today, VCDL PAC Chairman Kenneth M. Elliott, Jr. said that
"THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES NOT ONLY ANSWERED THE SURVEY POSITIVELY, BUT THEY ACTIVELY PURSUED IT SO THAT THE VOTERS WOULD KNOW WHERE THEY STAND. They have been strong supporters of your rights for years."

A man who found a green metallic tube while cutting trees on his Comal County property thought it had a military look, like a rocket launcher.
He was right.
He was wrong to pick it up, take it home and display it on his dining room table.
A decal on the equipment discovered by Jarrette Schule said: Guided Missile and Launcher, Surface Attack.
I had never seen it before, said Schule, 34. I looked at it, and it kind of looked like a missile launcher. |

"When it comes to guns, Hollywood suffers from a self-imposed dissociative identity disorder. On the one hand, we have stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger making fabulous careers for themselves portraying heroes who solve problems using guns as tools to fight evil, and on the other hand, we have politicians like Arnold Schwarzenegger signing edicts that infringe on the ability of his audience and constituents to do just that."
"This isn't new. Here's an example from half a century ago." |

Officers train at the Portland Police Bureau's Advanced Academy in 2005. Portland Commissioner Randy Leonard wants Water Bureau employees who patrol the city's water supply, to be able to carry guns and make arrests.Portland Commissioner Randy Leonard wants to deputize a portion of his Water Bureau, giving guns and arresting powers to the people who protect Portland's drinking water.
And the idea, to almost no one's surprise, isn't faring well with the other people in charge of overseeing official firearm use in the city.
A puzzled Dan Saltzman, the commissioner in charge of the Police Bureau, called Leonard's plan unnecessary and confusing. Police Chief Rosie Sizer said creating another police unit would be "extreme" and "Hercu |

During my morning browse-fest, I am stumbling more and more over news stories in which people are charged with felonies, repeatedly tased by police or otherwise brutalized for the crime of having a bad attitude. No act of violence, no damage to property, no threat of violence is alleged; the person is arrested pure and simply for a bad attitude. In this context, the definition of bad is that the person spoke back to authority, said 'no' to a request or did not comply quickly enough, asked a question or tried to argue...in short, the person did not immediately and with subservience obey.
