MI: More billboards won't fix Flint's violence problem -- gun control will

Did you hear that Flint is getting federal help to attack its violence problem?

Don't get too excited.

Because unless it comes with new laws for gun control, it's destined to fail.

I'm the last person to advocate turning away help....

Say, close the gun-show loophole that allows private transfer of firearms without a background check. If checks are required for gun stores, why make exceptions?

Make semi-automatic weapons illegal. The Second Amendment crowd can keep the muskets that our forefathers were carrying when they came up with right to bear arms.

Put a ban on high-capacity magazines. It won't prevent drive-by shootings but it will create a pause if you have to reload after six shots.

Will any of this happen?

Dallas Police Chief David Brown fired 35-year-old Senior Cpl. Marqueon Skinner Wednesday. Authorities say Skinner told police he hired a prostitute on Craigslist and while in her apartment June 30, a man and woman entered and robbed Skinner at gunpoint.

Authorities say Skinner ran from the apartment naked and called police. Police say they found the officer's clothes and other belongings inside the woman's apartment.

One of the University of Missouris very own legal eagles is suing the school over its policy banning firearms on campus.

Royce de R. Barondes, who has taught business and corporate law at the school in Columbia since 2002, is looking to give his employers a lesson in constitutional law by challenging a policy he said violates his federal and state rights. Barondes, who also teaches a course on firearms law, has "extensive knowledge and training on the lawful use and safe handling of a firearm," according to his legal case, filed in state court, and believes carrying a firearm helps ensure his safety on the 35,000-student campus.

Nevertheless, many private actors can also interfere with the fundamental right of self-defense by establishing their own antigun policies and practices. Your NRA has therefore supported legislation to prevent gratuitous antigun discrimination in the private sector, including by doctors, employers, insurance companies, and businesses that offer public parking.

After all, the right to keep and bear arms would not mean much if its exercise prevented law-abiding people from availing themselves of the necessities of modern life.

Last week, the Utah Supreme Court issued a strong endorsement of self-defense as public policy in a claim arising out of private action.

After Chris Harper Mercer opened fire on the Umpqua Community College (UCC) campus, killing 10 people on October 1, Breitbart News reported that the UCC was a gun free zonea zone that is so gun free even the security guards were not allowed to carry guns.

And this immediately begs the question: Would Mercer have opened fire on that campus if law-abiding students had been allowed to carry guns for self-defense?

Charles Sattler, a 43-year-old Denver man charged with manslaughter and first-degree assault following a fight at Friscos Snowshoe Motel, was found not guilty of both counts on Thursday.

...

The trial marked the second attempt to reach a verdict since Sattler was arrested in April of 2014. During a trial last June, a hung jury was unable to reach a verdict, resulting in a mistrial. At that time, Sattler also faced a second-degree murder charge, but the charge was later dropped and the location changed for the retrial.

"The right to self-defense works. Conceal carry works. Had one person there been able to defend themselves -- you don't need every person in the room to be carrying, but if one person is carrying, those kinds of things don't happen," said Clark.

In his response, President Barack Obama attacks that philosophy.

"'We need more guns,' they'll argue. Fewer gun safety laws. Does anybody really believe that? There are scores of responsible gun owners in this country. They know that's not true," said President Obama.

The man arrested by Morgan Hill police after a May 20 bar fight that ended with the death of John Flood will not be charged by the Santa Clara County District Attorneys Office.

Joseph Haley, 32 of San Jose, will not face criminal charges due to a lack of sufficient evidence, according to Supervising Deputy DA Steve Lowney. A key piece of evidencea video of the incident recorded by a security camerasuggested that Haley struck Flood in self defense.

Specifically, we would not be able to prove that the suspect did not act in lawful self defense, Lowney said.

Revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns are now available in an array of colors including pink and purple, a true sign that women are getting more involved in the gun world and want something different to call their own. Have you seen some of the tiger prints? Hot to trot!

Pink ammo hit the market last year when Hornady came out with a line of self-defense rounds in .38 special for women (but men can use it too). The 90 grain pink tipped hollow-point is designed to do maximum damage (in the case of self-defense) while reducing the recoil or kick of the gun when fired.

While Clinton has previously supported an assault weapons ban, this is the first time since launching her campaign that she indicated that she would take on the Supreme Court over gun issues.

A frustrated President Obama demanded change on gun control after the Oregon college shooting which grabbed the nations attention Thursday.

The president was clearly angry with the frequency of mass shootings in America and critics who said he was politicizing the issue. This is something we should politicize, he said earnestly. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic.

Governor Brown has until Sunday, October 11, to decide to VETO or sign four anti-gun bills.

There is still plenty of time for law-abiding gun owners, sportsmen, and Second Amendment supporters to contact Governor Brown urging him to VETO the following bills.

Please let Governor Brown know that these bills would do nothing to address crime and that they would only impact law-abiding gun owners.

Homicides declined again in 2014, continuing a multi-year pattern while the number concealed carry licenses and permits keeps rising; a sticky subject touched on yesterday by the Washington Free Beacon in a story quoting Bellevues Alan Gottlieb, just back from last weekends 30th annual Gun Rights Policy Conference.

The gun prohibition lobby and Michael Bloomberg and friends must be choking on this huge drop in homicides, said Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, and chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

A few facts to arm thoughtful people when confronting gun defenders

Here are a few facts, however, to help arm thoughtful people in arguing with the charitably uninformed masses:

This is the 264th mass shooting this year. Yes, 264 mass shootings in less than a year.

Firearms kill 33,000 people every year.

Every 6 hours in America more people die from gun violence than were killed by terrorists in all of 2014. If a disease like Ebola was killing as many people as guns there would be rioting in the streets to cure it.

In the last 30 years there has never been a single instance of a good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy intent on killing a bunch of people... 30 years.

This NRA Tweet Right Before The Umpqua Community College Shooting Highlights The Pro-Gun Group's Main Problem

The NRA is the nation's strongest defender of the Second Amendment, and its website says: "Together with our more than five million members, we're proud defenders of history's patriots and diligent protectors of the Second Amendment." The group's main argument in favor of minimal gun laws aside from owning a gun being a constitutional right is that guns allow Americans to defend themselves against criminals and other threats. But Thursday's shooting is just another example of how that's simply not the reality. The tragedy at Umpqua Community College was the 45th school shooting across the country this year, though it was the most deadly so far, reportedly killing 10.

News5 spoke exclusively with the man who shot and wounded a bear to defend his family Thursday morning in the Rockrimmon area. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says his actions were justifiable.

"It was about three in the morning, and I was downstairs," the father of two told News5. We've chosen not to identify him. "My daughter was upstairs sleeping. My wife was sleeping with my baby. It was out of nowhere it. It just felt like the whole house was shaking. So I came out here and looked, it was a bear."

He did everything he could to scare the bear off. "I was banging on the window, yelling at the bear, hitting pots and pans. I threw a vase at it. It just kept coming after it saw us to try to get through the door even faster."

The University of Texas is starting the process of deciding where to allow concealed handguns on campus.

The University of Texas at Austin is hosting on Wednesday night the first of two public forums on campus carry, as it and other universities in Texas get a handle on how they will start implementing the contentious firearms law in fall 2016.

A petition from UT Students Opposing Campus Carry has more than 5,000 signatures. Private universities dont have to comply. Supporters call it a personal safety and constitutional rights issue.

MN: We need to consider repealing Second Amendment in face of tragedies

Over the years, the Constitution has in fact been amended 17 times since the original 10 known as the Bill of Rights. This includes the 18th for Prohibition and the 21st for the repeal of Prohibition. Now is the time to repeal another amendment.

Our Founding Fathers never envisioned the progress in increasing the destructive power of firearms. They also never envisioned the use of these firearms to slaughter innocent citizens either individually or via our all too familiar mass shootings. After every tragic shooting incident, NRA leaders and some members hide behind the Second Amendment as part of a laundry list of predictable excuses for doing nothing to prevent the next tragedy.

Rep. Dennis Baxley (R-FL) has introduced a bill designed to strengthen Floridas Stand Your Ground law, which law already sets the national standard for vigilante misconduct.

Baxley introduced H.B. 169, the Use or Threatened Use of Force bill earlier this month that proposes to increase protections for people like George Zimmerman from standing trial. The bill provides that those claiming self-defense under Stand Your Ground will no longer have to prove that they acted for fear of their own lives. The burden of proof would be placed on the victim, and the prosecutor would have to prove the shooter acted with malice. The bill was introduced once last year, but the Florida Supreme Court rejected it.

Would you let your child answer a survey that wanted to know how many guns you owned, what you used them for, and your political affiliation? Parents of students at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas were skeptical about a questionnaire their children received and demanded to know where it came from.

After a popular radio host and gun advocate, Michael Cargill of Come and Talk It, shared an image of the survey on social media, Hendrickson High School soon found itself embroiled in a controversy it had scarcely expected. According to TheBlaze, parents were initially concerned that the survey had come from school officialsbut the staff of the high school said they were never notified of any such survey.

Now this is one neighborhood improvement story Id like to see more of from coast to coast!

So far this year, the communities of Bellaire and West University, TX have seen nearly 50 residential break-ins and the reaction from residents is pretty typical. Theyre knocking on the front door and if we dont answer they go and kick in the back door, exclaimed a mother named Meghan, of Bellaire.

Its terrifying. I have two children and if anyone were to break in we would have no protection, said Lisa Fleishman, also of Bellaire.
