Twelve-year-old Gavin Carrizales shot the first perfect score in history of the Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational on Sept. 26 at Pressey Wildlife Management Area south of Broken Bow.

The Scottsbluff sixth-grader hit all 40 silhouette targets to win the championship in just his second year of eligibility. He had the second-highest score in the 2019 shoot at 34.

The annual event, which was established in 1977, is open to all Hunter Education graduates who are at least 11 years old and have not graduated high school.

The Panhandle showed its strength as High Boy winner Austin Rahmig of McGrew had the second-highest score of the day at 39. High Girl winner Danika Bohl of Mitchell had a 38.

We are just weeks away from the November election and gun shop owners say they cant keep products on the shelves.

At Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City, Owner Glenn Duncan says its not shocking to see an increase in customers nearing the election.

What is surprising though, is the reason why it happens.

We are just weeks away from the November election and gun shop owners say they cant keep products on the shelves.

Everyone in the industry has been really busy, said Duncan. I spend 8 to 12 hours a day looking for products.

He says his top customers are women.

If Governor Whitmer signs a new bill into law, would allow the use of air-powered bows for all hunters during firearm season.

House Bill 4332 outlines that hunters with specific disabilities detailed in the bill will be able to apply for a permit from the Department of Natural Resources to use air-powered bows during bow season.

The measure, sponsored by State Rep. Beau LaFave, received bipartisan support in both the House and Senate and is now heading to the Governor's desk.

LaFave explained that air bows use compressed air to launch arrows and can be used with one hand if needed, helping those who are unable to hold, aim and shoot a traditional bow or crossbow.

Most conflicts between bears and humans are not reported to the authorities. Of those which are reported, only a small number are reported in the local or national media. Of those reported in the media, many do not include information about the firearms used.

A few months ago, Editor-in-Chief Fredy Rehl of AmmoLand News and I were discussing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests which might result in information of interest to AmmoLand News readers. I suggested FOIA requests be submitted to agencies dealing with bear attacks.

So, heres the question: How much power should local governments have to regulate firearms or prevent their possession by felons, minors, undocumented immigrants or people judged mentally incompetent?

Not much, according to backers of Legislative Referendum 130, the ballot measure sent to voters by Montana lawmakers last session.

Legislative Referendum 130 asks voters to remove local governments power to regulate the carrying of concealed firearms or to restrict the open carry of firearms except in public buildings within a governments jurisdiction.

According the NRA: In July 2020, A Girl & A Gun conducted a survey of more than 6,000 members to specifically focus on womens reasons and interests. Results showed that 43 percent of women joined AG&AG to practice self-defense skills, and 92 percent were in the process of obtaining or already had acquired their concealed or open carry permits.

This complemented the NSSF survey data that 25 percent of first-time buyers had already taken some form of firearms-safety course and 63 percent inquired about taking a firearms safety course in the near future.

In other words, you are a vigilante if you exercise your basic right of self-defense without the permission of the predatory state that supports the rioters and looters. In fact, if people defended and protected themselves, the result would not be chaos, but a far better system than we have now. As the great Murray Rothbard explained, people in a free market society would defend themselves by hiring private protection agencies. The agencies would compete to provide the services customers want, rather than cater to the whim of a mob or promote venality and power seeking, as officials of the state do now.

During his time as governor, Sununu has defended our rights, notably by vetoing a firearms confiscation bill. Sununu also kept gun stores open during the lockdowns to fight the Wuhan coronavirus. That was just in 2020. In 2019, he vetoed a number of other attacks on our rights. While it would be preferable to see pro-Second Amendment legislation passed, Sununu has, at least been far better than Larry Hogan, who didnt veto bills that had attacks on our rights.

Sununu declined the opportunity to run against Jeanne Shaheen this year, instead going for his third term as governor. While in one sense, it is disappointing, given Shaheens awful track record, Sununu may instead be biding his time to hit a weaker opponent.

Earlier this week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill that requires newer model handguns in California to be microstamped.

Gun manufacturers and firearm advocates denounced the decision, noting that it not only violates Second Amendment rights and would increase black market activity and and non-registered weapons in the state, but would also hurt economically during a time of economic downturn.

Two Democratic state senators have introduced a pair of bills this week (SB 1158 and SB 1159) that would prohibit open and concealed carry of firearms inside Michigan's Capitol building.

The ban would not apply to state law enforcement or Capitol security, and firearms would still be allowed outside on Capitol grounds.

Some of the big news this week is Rugers acquisition of Marlin since the previous owner, Remington, is folding up. And, that got me to thinking about lever guns as defensive firearms.

My first fighting lever action happened to be a Marlin. Back in the early 1970s, I got a Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum, and cut it down to Trapper size. Even with the 16-inch barrel, it held 9 rounds of 240-grain hollowpoints and was just a handy little carbine.

Ohioans will not have to worry about gun dealers being closed down based on an order for a public official if the Ohio House follows the Senate.

The Senate needed less than a month from introduction to passage of a bill that bars prohibiting the commercial sale of firearms and ammunition. It now goes to the House.

This has been a difficult year for Ohio, and while we continue to focus on slowing COVID-19, we must be mindful that we face these challenges before the backdrop of the peoples inalienable rights, Senate President Larry Obhof, R-Medina, said. Ensuring the right of Ohioans to defend themselves and feel secure is a vital part of our work.

Georgia Democratic Senate hopeful Jon Ossoff is running as a defender of the Second Amendment but supports a ban on all semiautomatic rifle sales.

Ossoff portrays himself as a protector of gun rights in a new ad airing across the state. "Nothings more important than keeping Georgians safe," he says. "Ill defend our Second Amendment."

Ossoffs list of endorsements from top gun-control groups, including the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the Brady PAC, raises questions about his claim.
