A 36-year-old pro-gun republican has won the governor's race in Louisiana with 53 percent of the vote. Bobby Jindall is the author and sponsor of a federal law that outlaws the confiscation of firearms from otherwise law abiding persons during a state of emergency -- a law that is the direct result of out-of-control actions by law enforcement and politicians in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The son of parents who emigrated to the United States from India, he fought off challenges from two multi-millionaires. |

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was named the recipient of an award from the Harvard School of Public Health for his administration's efforts to improve the health of New Yorkers, the school announced Sunday. Bloomberg will receive the 2007 Julius B. Richmond Award, the school's highest honor, Oct. 29 at a private ceremony and lecture at Harvard. The Bloomberg administration has mounted successful campaigns to improve millions of residents' health and safety, the school said, noting the city's bans on smoking and trans fats in restaurants, and efforts against gun violence. |
Tell me why the States needed the so-called "Collective Right" Second Amendment?

The intent and wording of the Second Amendment has been the subject of debate for many years. Opponents of the individual right to keep and bear arms claim the right enumerated in the Amendment is a "collective right" that pertains to the States' militias. When these groups and individuals make this claim, proponents of the individual right interpretation attempt to justify their position by turning to the wording of the Second Amendment. In the author's opinion, this is a huge mistake because it limits the debate and does not force proponents of the "collective right" interpretation to substantiate their assertion. |

Whether tucked inside waistbands, slipped in jacket pockets or holstered around ankles, chances are most handguns being carried around Boulder County go unnoticed. "You wouldn't know I'm carrying," said 46-year-old Longmont resident Rod Brandenburg, who occasionally packs a fully loaded .45-caliber Heckler & Koch pistol. Brandenburg owns Grandpa's Pawn & Gun on Longmont's Main Street the fourth-highest-volume gun dealer in Colorado and is among the 1,462 people living in Boulder County who have a government permit to secretly arm themselves in public. |

A common argument by those who would like to deny their fellow citizens Second Amendment rights is that only the police should have guns. This thinking has flaws. One of them is that police officers are humans, susceptible to succumbing to human passions and instability. The recent massacre of six young adults by an off-duty deputy proves it.
The State Legislative Reference Bureau of Wisconsin, where this tragedy occurred, concluded the following in 1998: "A gun, while powerful and destructive, is no more than a tool controlled by the person who uses it. ?" This wisdom will always be true. |

Colorado is an almost identical political environment to Illinois. Denver only is dominated by liberal, gun-grabbing legislators, like Chicago. |

A second-grader's artistic effort has got him in trouble. Seven-year-old Kyle Walker was suspended for one day last week by school officials in Cape May County for drawing a stick figure shooting a gun.
His mother told The Press of Atlantic City that officials at Dennis Township Primary School told her the drawing violated a zero-tolerance policy for guns. |

Here we go again. Fresh from his botched and mangled budget fight, David Miller is again into the breach, expounding on his gun registration and banning arguments. The fact that the majority of guns are brought across the border from U.S. jurisdictions won't deter our mayor from simplistic arguments. While a few collectors have guns stolen, this doesn't justify the wholesale destruction of their hobby. However, it is easy to attack a few gun collectors or farmers using their .22 calibre rifles to shoot gophers in their fields. It gives the appearance of a decisive, proactive politician, which he is not.
Back to the budget, Mayor Miller, and solve a real problem. |

TONY EASTLEY: In the United States there were almost 15,000 murders last year and the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) says guns were used in three-quarters of the killings.
Yet in some states like Pennsylvania, getting a gun is almost as easy as ordering a pizza.
In the state's largest city, Philadelphia, hundreds of people are being shot dead each year and police have no real idea of how many weapons there are out on the streets.

"Yes, I tried to get in the way on purpose. I have a right to state my view as much as they do," said Chesterfield County resident Paul Henick. "They can't muzzle me."
Henick, who wore a badge from the Citizen Defense League, loomed over the recumbent victims with a half-dozen other gun-rights activists. He carried a sign that stated: "This is what happens when people are denied effective means of self-defense."
"If I'm an activist, I have to be active," Henick said. Loophole protestors were just as vociferous. |

The redundancy was a 12-0 vote to adopt an advisory resolution pledging it will oppose the enactment of any legislation that would infringe upon the rights of the people to keep and bear arms.
...
The target of the county boards resolution was proposed state legislation to eliminate shotguns. As of Thursday, 53 counties have adopted the resolution.
Charleston resident John Hamilton earlier brought the resolution to a Coles County Board committee. Hamilton works with Illinois Pro Second Amendment Resolution.
We didnt want to wake up some morning and not have a right to a shotgun and to hunting, Hamilton said in the wake of the vote. |

Another gun buyback netted 15 firearms Saturday, including a sawed-off shotgun and an $800 handgun, encouraging program organizers to try for one more buyback this year.
"We were excited to take in a sawed-off pump shotgun," said Pastor Harvey Burnett, who has organized the three buybacks that trade $100 gift cards for firearms in an effort to curb violent crime on the city's streets. |

An organization called "Guitars, Not Guns," is teaming up with the city of Lake Worth to prevent crime.
On Sunday, the organization gave away 10 guitars to teens, in an effort to prevent violence. The teens will have to attend lessons and practice on their own to keep the guitars.
The mayor of Lake Worth supports the program as a way to give kids activities, so that they won't be tempted to turn to crime. |

In Oregon, high school English teacher Shirley Katz is suing South Medford School District to allow her to carry her pistol to school. Even without the ex-husband, I say let the woman pack. With little regard to constitutions, Congress passed the Gun-Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) of 1990, which prohibits anyone from carrying a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school. I dont understand how this law makes sense. After all, its already illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a firearm, unless he or she is accompanied by an adult. In some states, including Pennsylvania, people must also be 21 to receive a carry- and-conceal license. Whos left? Law-abiding teachers, adult visitors and administrators. So why the extra law?

Randy Powell has a .50-caliber machine gun he would like to sell you —but he can't afford to.
The monster, sitting in a cage in back of his gun store and shooting range in Lawrenceville, can cut down a tree — and could easily fetch $30,000 in a perfectly legal sale. But for Powell, the sale would be the equivalent of hawking a Picasso or vintage wine. |

Owing to budget shortfalls, Beaver Village, Ohio (pop. 464) disbanded its police department for several years, relying instead on the Pike County Sheriff's Department to handle emergency calls.
About a year ago, the village repudiated its blessing by reconstituting its police force, which consisted of Chief Daniel Seal, auxiliary officer Brady Ratzlaff, and officer trainee Adam Mather.
I say consisted because last Monday the entire force was suspended after an October 7 incident in which local resident Steve Adams was forced to make a 911 call to the Pike County Sheriff begging for help because the cops beat my son up.

The Air Force said Friday it has punished 70 airmen involved in the accidental, cross-country flight of a nuclear-armed B-52 bomber following an investigation that found widespread disregard for the rules on handling such munitions.
"There has been an erosion of adherence to weapons-handling standards at Minot Air Force Base and Barksdale Air Force Base," said Maj. Gen. Richard Newton, the Air Force deputy chief of staff for operations.
[T]he B-52 was inadvertently armed with six nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and flown from Minot in North Dakota to Barksdale in Louisiana without anyone noticing the mistake for more than a day. ------- And we can't carry a pistol without a CCW permit. What's wrong with this picture?
