The letter writer stated that I am "the face of the movement that has pushed to allow guns in churches and bars." Really? I've not authored any legislation to do either. But I support it.
The facts are that bad guys can easily take guns into churches, bars, and anywhere else without metal detectors. Will there be a good guy with a gun to shoot back? Or does the writer prefer innocent people being shot at like fish in a barrel? Nobody has to be a victim. I fully support self-defense. |

Retired Army Sgt. Howard Ray is a hero. Just ask the men and womenboth comrades and civilianswhom he saved at Fort Hood back in 2009, when Nidal Hasan went on a shooting rampage, killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others.
For his efforts to rescue many that fateful day, Sgt. Ray received a medal of commendation. Yet the recent killing of four Marines and a Navy sailor in Chattanooga, Tenn., by a lone-wolf radical Muslim terrorist has prompted Sgt. Ray, recently retired, to speak out about an injustice that continues to cost lives of our military men and women. |

This past week, Mainers came together in an effort to get an important gun safety initiative onto next years ballot. At events in Ellsworth and Portland, volunteers started collecting signatures so that next fall Maine voters will have the opportunity to support criminal background checks on all gun sales.
This is a common-sense public safety measure that recognizes that Second Amendment rights go hand in hand with the responsibility to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Mainers deserve the chance to have an up-or-down vote on this critical issue. |

Many of the new products rolling out onto the shooting market each year are variations or improvements of existing designs. But once in a while, something unique arrives. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to travel to Savannah, Ga., and meet with the team at PolyCase Ammunition to learn more about the companys fundamentally new approach to bullet design and manufacturing.

Earlier this month, presidential contender Hillary Clinton reacted to the Roseburg, Ore., shooting spree by proposing four new gun-control laws. And last week, California lieutenant governor and gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom took the lead on the issue in the state by announcing a drive to put a firearms-control initiative on the November 2016 ballot.
Along with a group of activists called the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Newsom unveiled a measure that would, among other provisions, require gun owners who own magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition to turn them in to police, sell them to licensed firearm dealers or move them out of California. |

Adam Winkler, a liberal law professor writing in The Washington Post, argued that changing demographics in America will doom the National Rifle Association as the white majority shrinks and minorities grow in population.
In Winklers piece, "The NRA will fall. Its inevitable," he explained:
The core of the NRAs support comes from white, rural and relatively less educated voters. This demographic is currently influential in politics but clearly on the wane. Using demographic characteristics to back up his claim, he says that whites who make up 63% of the population today will soon be outnumbered: |

More women are buying firearms than ever before, according to industry experts, thanks to an increased interest in self defense, marketing and surprisingly, target shooting.
"Clearly in the last two years there's been a surge in women purchasing firearms," said Jeff McClure, CEO of Freedom Capital Investment Management, a group that McClure said invests in companies that enhance the security and freedom of the United States, including the firearm industry.
"The industry is now marketing to women more," he added. "Both are intertwined. The more people of a certain demographic to purchase a product, the more marketing there is and vice versa." |

Let us looks at some bare facts. Guns are already legal to have on campus in the state of Florida, however they are only allowed inside of the gun owners car. Guns have already been illegally possessed at UCF, which was evident in the recent Tower I incident. Most violent crimes are ended within seconds while police are usually minutes away. Criminals do not care to break an extra law when they already plan on violently assaulting someone. Finally, there is no empirical evidence that banning guns on campus has any effect on the violent crime rate. |

Officer TammyJo McCleney joined the Belton Police Department nearly a year and a half ago, and she quickly took up the community spirit and involvement displayed by her fellow Belton officers.
I found that there was a need for womens safety, womens self defense, McCleney said. Lots of people wanted to learn to shoot, especially since I started working on my off-duty time at Hawkeye Shooting Academy in Temple teaching CHL (concealed handgun license) and emergency classes. I really saw more of a need for women to bond, to have an environment where they felt comfortable.

Writing in The Washington Post, Kopel explained that the 2nd Circuits ruling is fashioned in such a way as to defy the SCOTUS ruling in McDonald v Chicago (2010) and District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). The 2nd Circuit did this by minimizing the scope of the rulingsdivorcing the letter of both rulings from the spirit of the same, thereby accepting bans of weapons other than those explicitly in focus in McDonald or Heller. |

Search as I may through dictionaries and the Internet, I am unable to find militia defined as a hunting club, nor that the sole purpose of the Second Amendment is to protect the rights of hunters.
The limits contained in the Second Amendment do not dictate the type or quantity of small arms a citizen has the right to possess, but the amendment does say the federal government cannot infringe upon those rights. The citizens who constitute the NRA membership support the full enforcement of laws which actually work to prevent firearms from being obtained by individuals who are not allowed to possess firearms. |

A spirited debate has erupted anew over allowing concealed carry on college campuses in several states, according to a story in The Hill earlier today, at the same time that a new Gallup poll shows a majority of Americans think more concealed firearms would make the country safer.
The Hill piece, by Colorado State University professor Raymond Hogler, notes that More states are joining the rush to bring weapons to public institutions of higher education. Concealed carry legislation in Texas prompted a recent cavalcade of dissent that featured students carrying sex toys and the resignation of a prominent faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin, Daniel Hamermesh, a well-known labor market economist. |

Controls are a step, but I personally think that all guns should be outlawed.
I'm wondering how many more children have to die before our society, made up of free thinking human beings with an understanding of right and wrong, finally decides to protect the rights and safety of all the members.
I do not think more guns makes guns safer.

But are such open displays of firearms an effective way for groups to promote their agendas?
Chris McIntire, the spokesperson for Idaho III%, said the experience at the recruiting stations was positive for his group, an organization that seeks to protect constitutional rights.
But afterward, organization members decided to only carry small arms at future events, while leaving the big guns like the AR-15s at home.
We do understand the social stigma and misconception of open carry, and anytime we show up in public, we want to appear professional, McIntire said. We believe the same message can be sent with just a small handgun on the hip. |

Most Americans maintain a favorable view of the National Rifle Association despite criticism and a presidential rebuke of the gun lobby after a massacre in Oregon this month, Gallup said.
The NRA is viewed favorably by 58 percent of Americans, Gallup said. That compares with 54 percent after the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and is just 2 points below its highest showing in Gallup polls since 1989.
Another poll by Gallup, released earlier this week, showed 55 percent of Americans prefer tighter regulations on gun sales, something the NRA generally opposes. Pro-gun groups say increased background checks for gun buyers could infringe on Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms. |

The tally on Bill S-2360, which would provide judges with relevant information from law enforcement when prospective gun buyers seek to expunge their mental health records, was 27-12 in favor of overriding the governors veto; 27 affirmative votes were required.
The bill will become law over Christies objections if the Assembly also votes to override. Christie, who has disavowed his previous support for gun-control while courting more conservative presidential primary voters, vetoed Bill S-2360 even though the measure passed originally with the unanimous support of lawmakers, Democrats and Republicans alike. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970). |
