"SUBLIMITY, Ore. (AP) A California member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves was shot and killed in Oregon after authorities say a hunter mistook him for a bear.
Christopher Ochoa, a 20-year-old from French Camp, Calif., and a friend were hiking through a field in Western Oregon on the way to Silver Creek Falls Park on Friday evening.
Ochoa was wearing dark-colored clothing when an Oregon man hunting for bear with his 12-year-old grandson saw something moving in the brush and fired one shot from a .270-caliber rifle, striking Ochoa, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said." |

She recalled paying a courtesy call on Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho) shortly after her nomination to the court by President Obama in May 2010. Risch asked her about gun rights, and remarked she may not realize how important the issue was to some Americans, especially in his home state.
She admitted never having owned or fired a gun before. "But I told the senator if I was fortunate enough to be confirmed, I would go hunting with Justice Scalia."
And she has, joining her conservative colleague on an excursion to a Washington-area shooting range and on several hunting trips, until now never reported. |

There's been a lot of misguided, unfounded, and just plain incorrect information circulating on the Internet lately regarding H.R. 822 -- the "National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011." Most of the false characterizations typically come from the anti-gun groups and media. But more and more, a small cadre of self-described "pro-gun" groups continually sound false alarms and "stir the pot" in an effort to be noticed. (And to raise money, of course.) These repeat offenders peddle mischaracterizations as the gospel, and dilute the good work being done to protect the Second Amendment by legitimate groups. |

Good guys always win? It usually works that way in the movies, especially if the hero happens to be Clint Eastwood, John Wayne or Harrison Ford. But in real life? Often in politics there isn't a choice. Sometimes you are given the selection between Republican candidate Yuck and Democrat Burp. Case in point: November 6, 2008. The sun shone brightly on Washington DC, but over the Republican National Headquarters, there hung a little gray cloud of gloom. "What happened?" asked the insider Republican strategists. "We had the issues, the money and all the paraphernalia necessary for victory. We thought we had a Big Tent winner but it turned out to be a Big Tent Bust!" |

A man hunting with his grandson accidentally killed a U.S. Marine due to return to duty this week, after mistaking him for a bear in the Oregon wilderness, authorities said.
Christopher Ochoa, 20, of French Camp, Calif., died at the scene in western Oregon Friday night. He had been hiking with a friend through a field and was wearing dark clothes, according to The Associated Press. The pair were headed to Silver Creek Falls Park.
Submitter's note: For once, the headline got it right... the "Hunter" did it, not the firearm.

Thanks to the good work of millions of American gun owners and NRA members, Congress is moving closer to restoring one of our fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
Last week, the House Judiciary Committee considered amendments to the National Right-to-Carry-Reciprocity Act (H.R. 822), which would allow any person with a valid, state-issued concealed firearm permit to exercise the right to carry a firearm in any state that permits concealed carry. |

"Just last week, Vice President Joe Biden gave evidence of this. He tried to equate the administration's jobs bill with the ability of citizens to be free of murderous criminals. He tried to equate the bill with the ability of women to be free of rapists," Snyder added.
"Doesn't Biden realize people are able to protect themselves from murderers and rapists only when they have the means to do so," asked Snyder. "Only when they are able to get, carry and use guns for self-protection?"
Snyder noted that later this week the House Judiciary Committee is slated to finish marking up H.R. 822, by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), the proposed National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011. This bill has 245 cosponsors. |

The non-restricted category includes most long-guns, such as ordinary hunting rifles and shotguns, ranging from simple bolt-action rifles to more sophisticated semi-automatic ones. Included in this category are many civilianized military rifles, such as large-calibre anti-material rifles powerful enough to pierce body armour, shoot down helicopters or penetrate armoured cars. These weapons can be transported at will, and even kept in the back seat of a car. |

The NYCLU study looked at 851 stun gun incident reports from eight police departments, including in Albany, Rochester and Syracuse. It found that police across the state have misused the powerful Tasers, turning them all too frequently on suspects who were already restrained. Some 15 percent of the time, police used the stun guns in this way. |

Right on that bills heels is the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, which would require states to honor concealed weapon permits from any other state no matter how lax the issuing states gun laws. So much for the GOPs staunch stand on state rights when it comes to things like gay marriage. The bill, which could come to the House floor this week, has drawn outrage from Democratic, Republican and independent mayors around the nation.
Neither of these measures is likely to pass the Senate, much less withstand a White House veto. |

Accused of manslaughter in the 2008 shooting death of a federal agent after a road-rage incident, James Patrick Wonder is hoping a jury never has to hear his case.
If his lawyers prevail at an upcoming hearing, the Miramar retiree will get his way.
Wonder, 68, and his attorneys are gearing up for a "Stand Your Ground" hearing, a chance to argue that he used deadly force in self-defense, and to convince a judge to toss the state's case against him.
The Florida Supreme Court ruled late last year that the state's Stand Your Ground law was intended to block any prosecution of people resorting to force in self-defense, and not just to give defendants an argument to use at trial. |

He plans to post signs outside his bar banning weapons inside, come Nov. 1.

The owner of Joes K Ranch is on the other side of the fence. He doesnt plan to post signs banning weapons. In fact he told us by phone Saturday night, he plans to conceal carry himself.
I feel that anyone that goes through the class, has a background check and is a legal concealed carry license, Im not worried about that person, explained Jerry Kotarak. |
