"Where the funding for the effort is coming from, and if city funds have been used to foot the travel and expense bill for the Atlanta summit and other ventures is another area meriting disclosure. At this point, the group is new enough to where they do not yet appear listed on the Guidestar nonprofit website, and Secretary of State corporate entity searches yielded no results in California and New York, from where Feuer and Vance respectively hail." |

The Districts newly minted concealed carry laws require gun owners seeking permits to complete 18 hours of firearms training. One problem: As of Wednesday, the day before a court-ordered deadline for the permitting process to begin, no instructors had been approved to teach the compulsory course. The disparity is emblematic of the citys reluctant scramble to comply with the July order that overturned the Districts ban on carrying handguns in public.

Good news for gun owners: A federal court in Idaho has struck down a ban on firearms for self-defense at recreation areas managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Two gun owners with concealed-carry permits challenged the policy, saying it interfered with their Second Amendment rights. |

But if Ernst is talking about some hypothetical situation in which governments disregard for her rights may necessitate an armed response its fair to ask her: What exactly is it? Is she saying that when law enforcement officers come to arrest her on some trumped-up charge, instead of submitting and fighting the charges in court shell shoot those officers? Who else is an appropriate target here? Members of Congress who pass laws taking away her rights? FBI agents? Who? |

The Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), established in 1975, is the lobbying arm of the NRA. It is committed to preserving the right of all law-abiding individuals to purchase, possess and use firearms for legitimate purposes as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. When restrictive gun control is proposed at the local, state or federal level, NRA members and supporters are contacted via ILA grassroots efforts and respond with individual letters, faxes, emails and calls to their elected representatives to make their views known. |

There are roughly 800,000 law enforcement personnel in the United States of America, a republic of 319 million (known, legal) souls.
Only a small fraction of them are on duty at any given time, and not all of them are patrol officers. Those officers out on the streets protecting the American people from criminals and terrorists have patrol areas measured in square miles, and it isnt uncommon for a handful of sheriffs deputies to have to patrol areas that are larger than some European principalities. In some parts of the nation, a call to 911 might not be answered within an hour, if it is even answered at all.

Critics assert that the new concealed carry gun laws in the District of Columbia amount to nothing more than backdoor gun control. According to the new requirements, gun owners seeking permits must complete 18 hours of firearms training, but no instructors have been approved to teach the course.
The Washington Times notes, The disparity is emblematic of the citys reluctant scramble to comply with the July order that overturned the Districts ban on carrying handguns in public. |

Despite what some might call an epidemic of gun violence in this country (and particularly in schools), the constitution protects your right to bear arms and your right to free speech. For these reasonsone would assume, at leastthe local high school in Broken Bow, Neb. is allowing their seniors to pose for yearbook photos holding guns.
The only rules: the photos have to be taken off campus (sorry, kids, no bring your gun to school day), and they must be done tastefully (as if there were any other way to take a yearbook photo holding a gun??). Phew. |

This is very close to swatting people who are carrying firearms, if someone notices them for any reason. The article says that this is a strict interpretation of the law. It goes far beyond that. Nothing in the law that I read indicates that individuals with the enhanced permit have to conceal their firearms. The enhanced permit merely allows them to carry concealed weapons. It does not *require* them to carry concealed weapons. Idaho law does not prohibit the open carry of firearms, although the law allows open carry of firearms to be regulated on a college campus for people who do not have the enhanced concealed carry permit. The wording of the law which restricts the authority of public colleges and universities is clear: |

Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho declared in Morris v. Army Corps Engineers that carrying a firearm for the purposes of self-defense outside of the home is a constitutional right:
The Second Amendment enshrines a fundamental right to self-protection. The Constitution is not a lunch menu. Federal agencies cannot pick and choose what parts of the Constitution they like and what parts they dont like. I am pleased to see todays court ruling validate my legislative effort to protect the Second Amendment, and restore continuity to firearm carry regulations on federal lands. |

In a press release late yesterday, which was picked up this morning by the Outdoor Wire, Gottlieb noted that under the existing Illinois law, citizens from only four states currently qualify under a provision mandating that only residents from states with substantially similar requirements to obtain a carry license are allowed to apply for non-resident licenses. They are Hawaii, New Mexico, South Carolina and Virginia.
SAF is joined in the lawsuit by the Illinois State Rifle Association, Illinois Carry, Inc., and ten individual plaintiffs, all residing in other states and who are licensed to carry in those states. |

Two initiatives regarding guns are on the November general election ballot. Neither will end gun violence in our society. But one of them I-594 at least has a chance to make people and cities safer. Voters should say Yes to I-594.
A similar measure I-591 should be rejected.
I-594 is not a radical move on guns and gun ownership. |

This is an excellent point. But, honestly, it was never going to be any other way. Gun control comes up when something terrible happens, and then it immediately dies down again when people come to their senses. The idea that an election in November of 2014 would be significantly changed by something that happened in 2012 was always a preposterous one.
Not, of course, that this stopped the predictions from flowing. Per Business Insider, last April: |

Speaking with MSNBC's Tamron Hall, Canadian Press correspondent Lee-Anne Goodman observed that occurrences such as the Parliament shooting aren't supposed to happen in Ottawa, where there are "pretty tight gun-control laws." As a result of the shooting, the nature and scope of Canada's gun-control laws are "going to become a debate," she added.
Thankfully, Kevin Vickers was authorized to carry a firearm. Most Canadians are not, and if the Parliament shooter had chosen a softer target, such as a school or movie theater, Canada might have had its own Columbine or Aurora, Colo., massacre on its hands. Both were gun-free zones. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).) |
