I punched in the combination and swung the door of the big gun safe open for Christine to get her rifle out. I turned around to explain something to Claire, the BBC environmental correspondent who had come to Alaska to go on a bear hunt with Christine and I. She was standing there with her hand covering her mouth, with a shocked and slightly amused look.

What, I asked. Pulling her hand away from her face, she changed her look to relief as she said with a laugh, Im sorry, Ive never seen anything like that; is that normal? Is what normal? I asked. All those guns; why would anyone need all those guns. Wouldnt one or two be enough?

While the jurys split is not known at this time, Bauer says it isnt a surprise a case like this would have a hard time reaching a unanimous decision.

When you have cases that involve things like self-defense, like firearms and second amendment rights, racial issues as well. Those are all different things that 12 of us in a vacuum sometimes cant agree upon, let alone in a situation where youve got a person standing trial that they could face prison time on, said Bauer.

A Second Amendment advocate from Tri-Cities is gathering signatures to repeal initiative 1639.

Radona Devereaux tells Action News she worked with a number of gun-advocate groups to assemble the final initiative.

Now she says they need nearly 300 thousand signatures from registered Washington voters before Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019.

From there, Devereaux says the petitions go to Olympia to get certified and if everything checks out we could be voting on a repeal next November.

Ambiguous language in a 2018 law means the Wyoming Supreme Court might have to review every criminal case that involves certain self-defense provisions, a Supreme Court justice said Thursday.

Justice Keith Kautz made the statement in an auditorium at the University of Wyoming College of Law, where the court heard arguments in the appeal of a first-degree murder case originating in Casper.

Aspen City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Tuesday night that bans open carry guns in city hall, but it is not yet decided what other buildings will also be included in the measure.

The ordinance specifically applies to bringing weapons into city council chambers when council is in session. All other instances are subject to a notice near all building entrances.

No person, other than a peace officer, shall carry, bring or possess a deadly weapon in any public building owned by the city and open to the public if the city manager has posted a sign to that effect at every public entrance to the building, the ordinance states.

To add insult to the situation, J and J Arms recently unveiled their store logo...a blood-red rifle scope crosshair. Now, in addition to living and playing next to a gun store, residents of East Dedham are confronted with the visual reminder of the violent purpose of this store. Let's be clear, a gun scope is not used by anyone who is interested in self-defense; scopes are a proactive tool to perpetuate violence on someone or something.

This is a case that literally begs for Supreme Court attention, said Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb. When the Court ruled in the 2008 Heller case that the Second Amendment protected a fundamental right, it was clear that this right belongs to everyone, not just the residents of an individual state. The Seventh Circuit held in Moore v. Madigan that the carrying of firearms in public for self-defense is a fundamental right, but under existing Illinois restrictions, that right has been limited to Illinois residents and citizens from only four other states.

Second Amendment Sanctuary counties and cities are popping up across the country, including several in East Tennessee.

Sevier and Jefferson County most recently passed a resolution. Roane, Loudon, Monroe, and Blount counties also passed the sanctuary county resolutions aimed at protecting citizens' 2nd Amendment right.

"The sanctuary law says we protect the second amendment first, and therefore we don't necessarily have to abide by that gun control law," Mark O'Gorman, a political science professor at Maryville College, said.

O'Gorman said they started after the Parkland high school shooting sparked an increase in gun control advocacy. In a gun sanctuary, O'Gorman said new laws wouldn't necessarily have to be enforced.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allens decision to enforce new red flag laws which allow for temporary confiscation of guns for people a judge deems at risk has spurred a campaign to have him recalled.

Dawn Principe, owner of Sage Hill Arms gun store in Winnemucca and member of the 1,600-member Facebook group behind the recall campaign, said members plan to file a notice of intent with the county on Thursday to recall the sheriff on the grounds he is not standing up for their rights. According to the county clerk, the group will have 90 days from when it files to collect 502 signatures and, if successful, proceed with a recall committee.

The Supreme Court has decided to proceed with a case challenging the legality of New York Citys handgun permitting system, which previously prevented its citizens from traveling outside the city with a licensed, locked and unloaded handgun.

New York City had requested that the case, scheduled to be heard on December 2, be declared moot because it removed most of the travel restrictions in June 2019. However, the court ruled on October 7 that oral arguments will go forward as planned.

Frustration and fury are the two main ingredients of what can best be described as a grassroots revolt in Washington State with the launch of a counter initiative effort to repeal gun control Initiative 1639, the extremist measure passed by about 60 percent of Evergreen State voters last November.

This isnt a case of sore losers but legions of law-abiding private citizens who believe their right to bear arms under both the federal and state constitutions is being violated.

Two weeks after Governor Mike DeWine unveiled his so-called STRONG Ohio gun control package, groups on both sides of the issue are ramping up the rhetoric.

The plan disappointed many who wanted universal background checks and a law allowing a judge to take guns from someone deemed a threat. DeWine called for both after the Oregon District mass shooting.

Now, both sides are lobbying lawmakers as they consider DeWines gun violence bill.

Walmart was never much of a gun store. It is now less of one. Walmart announced, as a response to the criminal actions of mass-murderers, that its going to stop selling handguns in Alaska (Walmart previously stopped selling handguns everywhere else) and will stop selling short-barrel rifle and handgun ammunition in stores all over America (it stopped selling modern sporting rifles in 2015, though it kept selling less-politically incorrect semi-automatic rifles). Walmart also just asked customers not to openly carry firearms in any of its stores, including its Sams Clubs.

Dicks Sporting Goods has spit in the faces of their gun-owning and hunting customer base. It started in 2012 after the shooting at Sandy Hookand its continued since. First, Dick's banned sales of AR-15s, then kowtowed to the anti-gun crowd by straight-up destroying millions of dollars worth of rifles. The sporting goods giants political activity has cost them some $250 million in potential business, but it might be all worth it if its CEO wins the presidency. Yeah, maybe all of these moves could be a way for Ed Stack to test the 2020 waters

March for Our Lives, the gun-control group founded after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., has issued what it has termed a peace plan. A better description might be, A Comprehensive Plan to Abolish the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. At its core, the program seeks to transmute gun ownership from a liberty that can be asserted against the government into a privilege that Americans can enjoy only with the permission of the state. Or, to put it another way, the program aims to repeal the Second Amendment without going through all that unpleasant written-amendment stuff.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm . . . is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege. [Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, at 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52, at 54 (1878)]
