"Angry that a bi-partisan group of 55 senators is cosponsoring legislation to prohibit lawsuits against gun makers and sellers for the actions of criminals, anti-gun activists swarmed the hallways of Senate office buildings Thursday offering a 'cure' for 'Mad NRA Sheep Disease.' "

"Second Amendment supporters responded that opponents of the bill should have read the legislation before criticizing it inaccurately."

"The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act passed the House in April by a vote of 285-140. Critics of the bill call it 'nothing but a gift to the gun industry.' "

" 'This special-interest, giveaway legislation flies in the face of freedom,' claimed Suzi Robinson, president of the Virginia 'Million Mom March' state council."

"Gun-rights advocates aren't the only people who believe that individuals should be free to own guns. Even gun-control advocates usually specify that they aren't trying to ban all guns."

"But most activists on both sides of the gun issue say there must be limits on gun ownership."

"Why?"

"So that guns don't fall into the 'wrong' hands."

"But if a law could keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be virtually no violent crime at all. Just pass a law specifying that bad people can't own guns and the problem of gun violence is solved."

"Unfortunately, things don't work out that way in the real world."

"AN ALL-OUT REVOLT against gun control may be brewing among rank-and-file police officers."

"In my last column, 'Gray Davis Cop-Killing Gun Law,' I revealed that anti-gun zealots such as Sarah Brady and Ted Kennedy have found a new enemy: cops. No longer content to disarm ordinary citizens, gun prohibitionists now want to strip off-duty and retired police of the right to keep and bear arms."...

"On the same day The New York Times reported that the Senate had approved a federal ban on 'partial birth' abortions, the paper carried a full-page ad in support of the federal ban on 'assault weapons.' The coincidence was striking because the two bans are similar in several conspicuous ways."

"To begin with, both are based on distinctions that dissolve upon close examination. 'Partial birth' abortion is said to be especially immoral, but it isn't. 'Assault weapons' are said be especially dangerous, but they aren't."

"A plastic gun is harder to find than a Senator who can swim the turbulent coastal waters off the Massachusetts coast..."

"There never has been a plastic gun; there is no such gun at this time; and if there were one sometime in the future, the Senator's law would do nothing to keep thugs and terrorists from obtaining such a gun."

"If someone were to build a plastic gun, firing it would convert the gun into a handful of useless, plastic rubble."

"Those in the anti-self defense crowd such as Senator Kennedy believe that gun bans will keep guns out of the wrong hands. The island of England has a near-total gun ban and now has more crime committed with guns than at any time in recent history."

"Organizers of the Million Mom March and States United to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation's largest umbrella grassroots organizations devoted to reducing gun violence, partnered today (Thursday) to pressure Congress to both renew and strengthen the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) and vote down a bill that would grant sweeping civil immunity from liability to gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers."

"The AWB, signed by President Clinton in 1994, will expire next year unless Congress renews it. It prohibits by name the sale of high-powered weapons such as UZIs, AK-47s and other semiautomatic guns capable of firing more than ten rounds of ammunition in rapid succession."

I was as bloodthirsty as the next guy when Harrison Ford shot the swordsman to kingdom come in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

You remember the scene. A menacing man dressed in black robes and red sash, smiling as he wields a fearsome blade, advances on hero grave robber Indiana Jones (Ford).

Indy takes one tired look at the guy, pulls out his revolver and shoots him dead.

Bang. Hurrah! Pass the popcorn.

It got a huge laugh and a round of applause from the crowd I saw Raiders with at the old University Theatre, the week the film opened in 1981.

What exactly were we applauding? What was so funny about killing a man in cold blood?

Here is more "zero tolerance" lunacy.

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A special needs student in Huron is in trouble with the law because of a plastic toy gun he brought on a school bus, reported NewsChannel5.

The 13-year old boy was on a school bus heading to Shawnee School Friday morning when he found a plastic toy gun in the pocket of his brother's coat, which he was wearing.

When other students saw it they panicked and told the bus driver.

Once at school, a teacher retrieved the toy gun and contacted the principal, who called the police.

The boy reportedly did not understand what was happening, so he resisted arrest.

In court, the boy was charged with inducing panic, possession of a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.

The student is due back in court for another hearing in two weeks.

The school principal wasn't available for comment.

Two Los Angeles City councilmen have been dubbed "Starsky and Hutch" because they moonlight as volunteer police officers.

Dennis Zine and Greig Smith are part of the 900-strong reserve corps of police officers who wear uniforms, carry a gun in many cases and make arrests, but are not paid, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Last year, reserve offers saved the city $7 million, the equivalent of 104 full time-officers, according to department officials.

Los Angeles requires its volunteers to have the same training as regular officers, and they must undergo background checks and refresher courses.

"The boy has been suspended since Oct. 17, when a .22-caliber rifle was discovered in the trunk of his car in the parking lot of Mukwonago High School. A decision on whether he could be expelled will likely be made today. The boy told authorities he had been hunting with the gun and forgot it in his car, although other students reported to police the boy told at least one other student about it."

"But he likely will not be charged with bringing the gun to school due to exceptions in state laws governing guns at schools. State law provides exceptions for cases when the gun is unloaded and kept in a case, or is used for a school program with permission, or when taken to private property by crossing school grounds."

"The student's gun was in a case in the truck of his car, unloaded."

From school superintendent Paul Strobel: "I don't want kids keeping rifles in the trunks of their cars even if they are cased and not loaded. I don't think it's generally a good idea. ... Potentially there is access to that car by other people. You just don't want to take that risk. It can simply get into the wrong hands. The best way to avoid that is to have (guns) locked up in their homes."

Uzoh said the three arrested bandits, reported to be former convicts, had been identified by the travellers.

They would soon be charged to court, he said.
