Through three presidential debates and one vice-presidential sparring match, the candidates have talked about issues ranging from North Mali to Big Bird and other assorted malarkey. Yet, we at The Ram feel that one very serious issue has been neglected by both tickets: gun control. Gun control has only come up once in this campaign, notably at the Oct. 16 town-hall debate at Hofstra in which the audience asked the questions.

Pfc. Jesus Hafen was fumbling a little with the magazine, until he figured out he was trying to put it into the weapon backwards. It was a weapon that would take some getting used to, but that was exactly the point of the days training weapons familiarization.

The following is the text of an open letter to hunters and sportsmen from ISRA-FEDPac Chairman, Richard Pearson:

Fellow Sportsman:

About this time four years ago, I penned an open letter to you that spoke of the Barack Obama I grew to know while I was a lobbyist in the Illinois State Capitol. At that time, I described Obama as a stony-faced liar who will do whatever it takes to force his extremist agenda on the American people. I warned you that electing Barack Obama would be something that hunters, sportsmen, target shooters and gun collectors would live to regret.

It is hard to believe but in a few short years my first born, my baby, will be heading off to college. The browsing has begun and next year we will begin making visits. Truly shocking to this GenXer dad not only is the college decision looming before me, but like so many other things that are different than when I was young, because my daughter is smarter and more gifted that I was at her age, distilling down the possibilities will be difficult. But try as we might to avoid it, we have to deal with the reality . . . our daughter will soon be going to college and we will have to help.

Critics of "castle doctrine" laws are blaming Montana's for the decision not to prosecute Brice Harper, who shot and killed Dan Fredenberg last month during a confrontation over Harper's affair with Fredenberg's wife. But as with the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, it is not clear why the legal provisions cited by the law's detractors are relevant. According to Harper, an enraged (but unarmed) Fredenburg charged into the garage at Harper's home in Kalispell on the night of September 22 "like he was on a mission."

Lets give a cheer for Nina Gonzalez, the woman who asked Mitt Romney and Barack Obama about gun control at last weeks presidential debate.

People, have you noticed how regularly this topic fails to come up? We have been having this campaign since the dawn of the ice age. Why wasnt there a gun control moment before now?

True, the candidates were asked about it after the horrific blood baths last summer in Colorado and Wisconsin. But there have been 43 American mass shootings in the last year. Wouldnt you think that would qualify guns for a more regular mention?

But as he walked through Mr. Harpers open garage door, Mr. Fredenberg was doing more than stepping uninvited onto someone elses property. He was unwittingly walking onto a legal landscape reshaped by laws that have given homeowners new leeway to use force inside their own homes.

The NRA is at it again! The National Rifle Association has bought ads in Wisconsin telling voters that President Barack Obama is chipping away at our Second Amendment rights. This could not be further from the truth. ... So if the gun lobby doesnt like the president, then gun control advocates must love him, right?
Wrong. Jeri Bonavia, executive director of Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, says, At a minimum, he should have gotten a national discussion going on what we can do to prevent gun violence. The president has an obligation to take up this issue, which has devastated so many communities. Years of silence are not serving the people well.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crime. Cesare Beccaria, quoted by Thomas Jefferson
