The House approved legislation Wednesday to give police new search powers in response to last months terrorist attacks, including the ability to secretly search homes, tap phones and track peoples use of the Internet.
Critics say it goes too far.
This legislation is based on the faulty assumption that safety must come at the expense of civil liberties, said Laura Murphy, head of the American Civil Liberty Unions Washington office. |

"Some citizens believe that they need to purchase firearms for self-protection. If the recent increase in firearms sales is attributable to people who may lawfully purchase firearms, that is the decision of the individual and not a matter that should be the subject of government oversight. If, on the other hand, any firearm purchased in this country falls into the hands of a terrorist because no background check was done, that is another national tragedy waiting to happen." |

"He said it obstructed his view and the truck's ladder controls. Two fellow firefighters say they agreed. Later, the three firemen, who are black, tossed around their Afrocentric philosophies as they have been known to do in casual, firehouse rap, between calls. Keeping the trio at home is overkill. They should be back on the truck." |

OHIO -- "Sheriff's detectives seized seven long guns taken in a burglary, including a semiautomatic rifle converted to fully automatic, and five juveniles are in custody, Sheriff Dave Vore said Tuesday."
"The firepower with these weapons are astronomical," Vore said. "There's really no hunting use for them, no target shooting use for them."
"The guns' owner, who took the weapons after his son died, told investigators he did not want the guns back, Vore said." |

The nationwide survey, sponsored by the nonprofit [and anti-gun] Entertainment Industries Council (EIC), covered 462 people, about half adults and half teenagers.
"The survey shows that gun violence in movies or TV is, brace yourself, the least attractive dramatic element. At 19%, gunplay comes in dead last, so to speak, on a long list of movie-TV attractions, below physical conflict (40%), sex/romance (55%), suspense (67%) and adventure (75%). Put that in your storyboard and write it." |

The anti-terrorism legislation that the U.S. House passed Wednesday would require a judge to monitor the FBI's use of an email surveillance system that stirred privacy worries.
The requirement, added by House Majority Leader Dick Armey, cheered civil liberties groups who have misgivings about the many new powers the bill would give law enforcers to confront terrorist suspects. |

Air travelers, beware. If you have a gun in your car, even if it is in your trunk, it can get you into a whole lot of legal trouble at the airport.
When David Leland dropped his car off at valet parking at the airport, he says he did not realize he had left a rifle in his trunk. The attendant found it and called police. The next thing you know Leland was being questioned by authorities. His gun was taken, and he was with illegal possession of a firearm, a misdemeanor. |

This one gets ready to be antigun under a full 2d Amendment rights recognition regime.
The technique is suggesting, ever so subtly, expansion of the realm of "reasonable restrictions," adding more categories, as Emerson was added under Lautenberg, to the obvious category of idiots, infants, and felons. Look for claims practically every disarming "regulation" is a "reasonable exception." |

"People can differ in good faith about what constitutes reasonable regulation. The Emerson decision, even if affirmed by the Supreme Court, would not foreclose advocates of gun control (as opposed to gun prohibition) from making a case in favor of laws to disarm people who are provably dangerous."
