"A recent study entitled 'Gun Laws and Sudden Death: Did the Australian Firearms Legislation of 1996 Make a Difference?' published in the British Journal of Criminology examines the history of gun control laws enacted in Australia. These laws include a complete ban on pump action shotguns, semi-automatic shotguns, and semi-automatic rifles. Australia also implemented a massive government sponsored Gun Buyback Program. That program has spent $500 million collecting 640,000 arbitrarily banned firearms."

"The authors cited data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) to reach their conclusions that the gun law reforms have had no effect whatsoever on murder or suicide rates when a firearm is used. " ...

"TONY EASTLEY: The introduction of Australia's tough new gun laws in 1996 has done little to reduce the rate of gun murder or suicide, according to a new report. And it says the $500 million buyback of guns after the Port Arthur massacre, where 35 people were killed, has had no effect on the homicide rate."

"The study, prepared by Australian pro-gun lobbyists and published in the British Journal of Criminology, argues that the money spent on buying back more than 600,000 weapons would have been better spent on a public health campaign." ...

Australia: Study no excuse to shoot down the law

"RESEARCH showing that the Australian gun buyback had no effect on the rate of gun homicide in Australia may have surprised and disappointed many people. Given that countries where more people own guns generally have more firearm homicides, it seemed sensible after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 to try to reduce the number of people owning firearms in Australia. So why didn't the policy work?"

"Before answering this question it is important to be clear about what the research shows and what it does not."

"First, although the authors of the study admit to being members of gun clubs, the study was well conducted and published in an internationally respected, peer-reviewed journal. ..." ...

"HALF a billion dollars spent buying back hundreds of thousands of guns after the Port Arthur massacre had no effect on the homicide rate, says a study published in an influential British journal."

"The report by two Australian academics, published in the British Journal of Criminology, said statistics gathered in the decade since Port Arthur showed gun deaths had been declining well before 1996 and the buyback of more than 600,000 mainly semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns had made no difference in the rate of decline." ...

"'Homicide patterns (firearm and non-firearm) were not influenced by the NFA, the conclusion being that the gun buyback and restrictive legislative changes had no influence on firearm homicide in Australia,' the study says." ...

"Should teachers and administrators legally be allowed to carry guns to school? This must be seriously discussed in the United States. It seems like the tragedy that struck Columbine High School in 1999 has become more common since then." ...

"According to John R. Lott, Jr., Ph.D. economist and author of More Guns, Less Crime and The Bias Against Guns, banning guns might seem to be the logical way to keep children safe in school. However, he uses a simple analogy:"

"Would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home saying, 'This home is a gun-free zone'? Law-abiding citizens might be pleased by such a sign, but to criminals it would be an invitation." ....

"David Stern understands having a gun to protect your home. He's not convinced carrying one on the streets makes you any safer.

For that reason, the NBA commissioner said Wednesday that he would prefer his players leave their firearms behind when they go out."

"'It's a pretty, I think, widely accepted statistic that if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically,' Stern said during his preseason conference call. 'We think this is an alarming subject, that although you'll read players saying how they feel safer with guns, in fact those guns actually make them less safe. And it's a real issue.'" ...

Police say charges will not be filed against a woman who killed her roommate's boyfriend in Myrtle Beach earlier this month.

They say David Shelton and his girlfriend were arguing inside her home at Kirkley's Mobile Home Park on Highway 15 earlier this month, when the fight got heated and her roommate shot Shelton.

Investigators are calling the shooting self defense and say there isn't enough evidence to charge either woman.

"A Superior Court judge dismissed Tuesday the case against Mark Steven Canady, who had been charged with murder in the death of Malcolm Jamal Farmer."

"After hearing testimony from its last witness, the state finished its case around 10:30 a.m. Defense attorney Tom Sallenger then made a motion to dismiss on the grounds that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence of murder. Sallenger argued that Canady shot Farmer as a means of self-defense."

"Judge Frank Brown granted Sallenger's motion, concluding the trial that began Monday afternoon." ...

"A would-be burglar learned a valuable lesson this morning at the S&R Market in Hazelwood."

"Don't bring a rock to a gunfight."

"A 54-year-old clerk opened fire on a hooded intruder who threw a rock through the window as she slept in a back room at the Second Avenue convenience store."

"'It was just reflex,' said the clerk, a Vietnamese immigrant who gave her name only as 'Tina.' 'I really was not aiming at him. Just scaring him.'"

"The three bullets Tina fired from her "Lady Smith" .357 revolver apparently did not hit the burglar, who ran from the store."

"Police said Tina will not likely face criminal charges for the 2 a.m. incident, since she is licensed to carry the gun." ...

"DURING the past decade, hunters have learned to gather their forces in order fight the daily attacks by anti-gun and animal-rights groups."

"The more radical the assault on hunters and shooters, the closer sportsmen stick together."

"Never is this instinct more visible than on Election Day. Gun owners are quick to spot anti, predatory candidates charging from the long grass. Reacting by forming themselves into a tight group, sportsmen run to the ballot box and vote with an enthusiasm matched by few other blocs."

"Burns thought the governor made a mistake by vetoing a bill that would have prevented the government from taking people's guns and ammunition during an emergency."

"Ashley Stinnett, previously a leader in the Wayne County Young Republicans, has been elected chairman of the West Virginia Federation of Young Republicans. This auxiliary organization to the state GOP concentrates on the 18-40 demographic in registering voters, helping candidates, and assisting with fundraising." ...

"One of the issues on which Stinnett has strong feelings concerns the Second Amendment. Despite the Homeland Security concerns, he explained that the right of citizens to have guns in their homes extends to the founding fathers who wanted to ensure that ordinary citizens 'could repel anyone who invades our shores.'" ...

With an anticipated release in the spring 2007, the development of the public safety project is attributed to an ongoing need to emphasize responsible firearm ownership and safe handling/storage practices. The goal of the project is two-fold: decrease the potential for firearm-related accidents within cherokee County, wile increasing public awareness and education. Community partnerships, range location and event scheduling will be announced as the program nears completion. ..."

"On November 7, Michigan voters will be faced with the choice of accepting a state law that permits the hunting of mourning doves or limiting the rights of residents of this state. I support Proposal 3 for the reason that its opponents are threatening to eliminate the sport of hunting one species at a time."

"The emotional appeal presented by opponents of dove hunting is a disguise for their ultimate goal of banning all hunting, trapping and even fishing. Anti-hunting groups are using this issue as a stepping-stone toward the complete eradication of hunters' rights. It is frightening when our society places a higher value on animal rights than human rights." ...

"Once you give up a piece of freedom, it's nearly impossible to get it back. Gun owners and sportsmen need to stick together this election and make sure that we don't send people to Washington who would abridge our freedoms because of their own personal views on firearms. Passing new gun-control legislation will do nothing to solve the problem of school shootings or violence in America; it will only take us further away from being a society that values personal responsibility and individual freedom. Rich Tarrant will be a defender of the Second Amendment and will fight to preserve our right to hunt, fish and trap. His opponent, Bernie Sanders, isn't behind the Second Amendment ..." ...
