"Students at West Valley's Granger High School were on lockdown Thursday morning as police followed up on a report that a student had brought a gun to school."

"For the first time in Canada, a judge has classified a starter's pistol as a firearm, sending a Toronto sports store employee to jail for a year on gun trafficking offences."

"The landmark ruling came one day after legislation banning sale of such pistols was introduced at Queen's Park."

"It is obvious that track officials would not use these pistols, but criminals would," Mr. Justice Eugene Ewaschuk, of the Ontario Superior Court, said during yesterday's ruling.

"CLEVELAND (AP) -- Seattle Mariners reliever Jose Mesa will have to stand trial on a concealed weapon charge, a judge ruled Thursday."

"The refusal by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Curran to dismiss the charge means a trial will start Nov. 13. If convicted, Mesa, a former Cleveland Indian, could be sentenced to as much as 1 1/2 years in prison and be deported to the Dominican Republic."
