The folks at United Nations headquarters in New York City, and our allies at Number 10 Downing Street in London, must be rubbing their hands with glee. Gun control groups here and abroad likewise are at last quietly cheering. Why? After a decade and a half of pushing unsuccessfully to secure Americas support for a legally-binding, international instrument to regulate the marketing, transfer and brokering in firearms, they are now on the brink of success. The process of formally negotiating an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) now has Washingtons seal of approval; announced October 14th by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

A number of Goshen residents are upset that Mayor Allan Kauffman joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a national lobbying coalition of mayors.

The opposition isn't as much about the coalition's stated goals as it is about concerns over the potential for erosion of Second Amendment rights.

"As a non-partisan group of more than 450 mayors, the coalition's principal focus is fighting crime," Kauffman says in a prepared statement he sends to people concerned about his membership in MAIG.

The Second Amendment of the Constitution was the focus of the town hall meeting held Sunday afternoon in Memorial Park.

The Second Amendment states; A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Many gathered in the park to show support of the Second Amendment and the liberties that come along with it. John Birch Society chapter leader Bob McCune began the meeting reading from Overview of America by John McManus.

NJ: In New Jersey, It's an 'F' vs. a Question Mark on Guns

A proSecond Amendment, pro-life, pro-tax-cut reader in New Jersey chuckles that Jon Corzine's latest attack ad against Republican Chris Christie is the first to make him enthusiastic about the GOP candidate, by attacking Christie for his positions on guns, abortion, and tax cuts.

As discussed on Cam's show, the NRA has not endorsed a candidate in New Jersey. Corzine is rated "F" by the organization (mostly because "Z" isn't an option), while Christie is rated a question mark usually a sign that a candidate declined to answer the questionnaire.

Imagine, for instance, that a future Republican-controlled Congress decided to enact a series of restrictions on the activities of labor unions and in order to make its case subpoenaed documents about salaries, expenses, conferences, events and other activities in order to mine the data for ammunition.

...

That is wrong regardless of the end objective. In fact, it is a dangerous precedent that the current Democratic leadership will regret in the coming years, when Republicans will inevitably take back control of some future Congress.

As a matter of fact, our country is very safe when it comes to firearms. Ownership is restricted by many factors, and one must have a clean record in order to legally own a firearm. Despite what a heap of strict laws may say, criminals will continue to ignore them. No matter the weapon of choice, a criminal will always attempt to gain the advantage. By making firearms inaccessible to law abiding citizens, we would be opening up a whole new world of opportunity to these criminals.

...

While we surely don't have the right to kill, we do have the right to life. In order to live freely, we must be willing and able to defend ourselves when necessary from those who wish to infringe upon that right.

State Representative Jennifer Coffey (R) has introduced a bill to legalize stilettos, switch knives, daggers, and dirk-knives for all law-abiding citizens in New Hampshire.

...

Rep. Coffeys bill removes the prohibition on these knives and focuses the law on CRIMINAL USE of the knives. Knife Rights supports efforts that remove restrictions on ownership, carry and legitimate use of knives as tools and arms and recognizes that it is the criminal use of knives that should garner the laws attention.

It is surely one of the most unusual pitches in this year's gubernatorial elections -- a Tony Soprano-like figure defending New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's recent efforts to close the gun show loophole and warning Virginians not to get too attached to their Second Amendment freedoms "if ya know what's good for ya."

Bloomberg underwrote a commercial in April that attacked former Virginia Atty. Gen. Bob McDonnell for his pro-gun positions and pushed for the closure of the state's "gun show loophole."

Back in June, we reported on a proposed U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rule change that would have expanded the Switchblade Knife Act of 1958 to include spring-assisted or one-handed-opening knives, and would have directly targeted the importation of assisted opening folding knives.

Assisted opening knives are frequently used by hunters, anglers, farmers, ranchers, firefighters, law enforcement and emergency personnel and anyone else who may need to open a knife with only one hand.

In "Restrict gun sales for a more peaceful union" (Oct. 24, letter to the editor), John Maxwell attempts to make the point that the Second Amendment limits gun ownership for the purpose of providing "a well-regulated militia." Though I personally agree with Mr. Maxwell, the Supreme Court of the United States in District of Columbia, et al. v. Heller (June 26, 2008) does not.

...

Washington, D.C., which had become the murder capital of the U.S., attempted to solve the problem of a proliferation of guns and violence by creating a gun-free zone. They were largely successful in dropping the murder rate. It is yet to be seen whether our nation's capital reverts back to that state of lawlessness.

A pair of masked home invaders, armed with a knife and a tire iron, are said to have kicked the door open and rushed inside. One of the robbers reportedly held a large knife to Peter's face, and threatened to kill him. James reportedly ran to his father's bedroom, where they kept their firearms, with the tire iron wielding intruder in hot pursuit. After grabbing a handgun and pointing it at the intruder, James told the intruder to leave, at which point the criminal refused and hit him in the head with a tire iron, according to police. James then reportedly shot the violent home invader in the stomach, prompting him and his accomplice to flee.

If youre like me, you own and maybe even carry firearms to be prepared for the unknown. Youve probably had safety training and some marksmanship or defense training as well. We all do this to be ready in case we have to defend ourselves or our family.

I was unprepared one time, however, not for defending myself against a violent attack, but for the legal implications of carrying. Far too often, gun owners are treated as second-class citizens, and even worse as criminals. Being prepared is looked at by some as a crime!

Michigan has been very active in organizing town hall meetings and other events to inform the public about the Second Amendment March in Washington D.C. on April 19th, 2010. We have had over 25 events ranging from picnics, town hall meetings, shooting competitions, a CPL course fundraiser, talks at the Capitol and manning tables at Cabelas and Jays Sporting Goods stores. Along with information these events have been an opportunity to raise not only awareness but much needed funds for the March.

The people of Michigan have made donations and bought fundraising items for a total to date of over $11,000, which is over a third of the total raised so far nationally. Well done Michigan.

Yang, who goes by the first name of "Dave," told investigators that he kicked an "intoxicated" man out of the sushi bar on Friday, Oct. 16 and that the man came back on Wednesday with two others, looking for him and making threats of reprisals, according to the affidavit.

On Thursday, Yang received a threatening call on his cell phone voice mail, he told investigators, from a man who said "people would be coming to the restaurant to kill him."

A short time later on Thursday, two men entered the restaurant, including the intoxicated man who had been kicked out the week before, the affidavit related. One man grabbed Yang from behind and the other started choking him, Yang told investigators.

Police said that a robbery victim acted in self-defense when he shot a man who was trying to rob him late Monday morning.

The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. behind a Wendy's restaurant, located on Broadway.

Investigators told 10TV's Glenn McEntyre that a man was walking his dog when another man approached him with a gun and demanded his wallet.

The victim complied and then pulled out his own gun, shooting the robber, police said.

The accused robber, Keith Walker Jr., ran to a nearby neighborhood where he collapsed. Walker underwent surgery at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, McEntyre reported.

A police officer has been charged with manslaughter for killing a suspected drunken driver in a restaurant parking lot in Washington state.

The 41-year-old officer, Troy Meade, was charged Monday with recklessly causing the death of 51-year-old Niles Meservey.

Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Mark Roe says the use of deadly force was not justified.

Meservey was shot June 10 while at the wheel of his idling white Chevrolet Corvette, boxed in by three police cruisers in the parking lot of Chuckwagon Inn. Officers had responded to a report of a drunken driver.

With tragic stories like the one below, it is tempting to believe that banning guns would make the world safer. But just as keeping the finger off the trigger and not pointing a gun at somebody would have saved this boys life, basing public policy on unsubstantiated, emotional reaction can create unintended consequences:

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) Bartlesville police say a 17-year-old boy has been killed in what appears to be an accidental shooting
A friend who was with the boy and called police said they were looking at a shotgun when it accidentally fired.

While U.S. gun control advocates push the Obama administration to enact more stringent gun control measures and want to use the California ammunition registry as a blueprint for getting all guns registered, Canadian officials are having a tough time justifying their registry and may move away from it.
