It is easier to buy an illegal handgun than a can of self-defense spray on Washington, D.C. streets. Thats because the city has a law intended to dissuade merchants from selling mace by forcing them to track and register every can sold. This leaves law-abiding people with nothing but their hands when confronted by a criminal. Ive been investigating the District's mace laws since a police detective told me I needed to register self-defense spray. I was concerned because Id received a threatening call, but more than that, I was dealing with reality of living in a city in the midst of a crime wave.

This summer, I almost died when a man with several guns opened fire on a packed movie theater audience at the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. I had stopped in Aurora, Colo., for the night with my best friend. We were on a cross-country bicycling tour of Americas heartland and had already covered 2,750 miles through 10 states. Countless strangers along the way had offered us food, housing, money and, in one case, a salsa-dancing night held in our honor. Aside from a few careless drivers, not a single person ever came close to harming us.

After the House held Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. in contempt on June 28, it filed a civil suit in federal district court on August 13. The purpose is to enforce a subpoena issued by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which requested documents for its investigation of "Operation Fast and Furious." The House complaint charges obstruction by the Justice Department and a need to understand why it provided false information to Congress in a letter of February 4, 2011. |

Emmaus High School's rifle team has a new practice range starting November 12. The East Penn School Board has approved an agreement with the Emmaus Borough Council that allows the team to practice at the Emmaus police department's firearms range during its competitive season, which lasts until Feb. 18, 2013.
The agreement calls for the district to provide its own locked storage cabinets for team equipment. Previously, the team practiced at Shimerville Recreation's indoor shooting range in Emmaus, but due to the death of the owner, that facility has closed down, President Charles Ballard said.

LUNENBURG -- Town officials say their hands may be tied when it comes to constant concerns being lodged by a resident against the North Leominster Rod & Gun Club, because the club may be exempt from some laws on the books.
Paul Harris, whose family has lived in town for years, has been lodging complaints with the town since the late 1990s because he believes the noise coming from the range is too loud and the club has improperly expanded, according Mike Sauvageau, the building commissioner and zoning officer for the town.

Chicago police are using a new technology that can listen for gunshots and help the responding officers pinpoint where they were fired. The technology, called ShotSpotter, relies on an acoustics-based, GPS-equipped system to feed police the location of a gunshot.
"Not only do we learn where the shots are being fired but now those officers can actually turn cameras on the location, get actionable intelligence that they can feed to the officers in the field as they're approaching," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy explained Thursday via an NBC Chicago broadcast. |

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says it is urging waterfowl hunters to check hunting bags, coats, boats and other gear to make sure they are not carrying any shot gun shells with lead shot. Department officials say small-game hunters sometimes forget to remove boxes of lead shot from their hunting bags and coats.

On the morning of October 25, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence discovered a St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner column from back in March, about what we will call "Constitutional pyrotechnics," that they find particularly troubling:
Unfortunately for CSGV, there is exactly zero truth to that statement. Nowhere in the March article is there any urging "to kill elected officials, policy [sic] and military service members. " Or perhaps CSGV does not consider that so unfortunate, after all, given their apparent indifference to whether or not anything they charge is actually true. |

Leavenworth, Kan. -- Fall turkey season is here and waterfowl hunting soon will be. Are you ready?
Every year, millions of hunters nationwide flock to the waterways, hardwoods, bottomlands, rolling hills, pine forests and numerous other landscapes in pursuit of varies types of birds or fowl. And, every year, some of them walk out of the hunt with a hollow feeling of disgust because they missed what seemed like easy shots.
Though there's nothing these folks can do about the past, they can do something to keep from missing their shots in the future. Being prepared, knowing their firearms and spending a little time on the shooting range can and will remedy shooting problems that have humbled many turkey hunters. |

Super cop Don Johnson - caught super-exposed? Nobody can accuse the Detroit Police department these days of being anything less than transparent. After placing a call to the mayor's office, Inspector Don Johnson, commanding officer of the Homeland Security division, was suspended with pay pending the results of an Internal Affairs investigation. Police sources say Johnson apparently texted a female subordinate a snapshot of his "johnson." We're also told the female subordinate is married but the photograph was found by her boyfriend, also a cop and also her subordinate. Trying to get our hands around this one, we reached out to Johnson. |

As Phil and I have noted, were doing a series of radio interviews to promote "The Total Gun Manual" which, I understand, may get us a Nobel Prize. (If Barack Obama can get a Nobel for doing absolutely nothing, why shouldnt we collect one for putting out the greatest gun book ever written?) Most of the talk-shot hosts Ive encountered have been completely ignorant about guns, and admitted it, and did good interviews. However, along the way Ive gotten some odd questions, and a couple of hostile ones. Some examples:
Have I ever shot anyone? (No, just unlucky I guess.)
Am I armed, right now, this minute? (No. The most dangerous thing in the vicinity is the cat, who is in his morning coma.) |

BUTTE Montanas wolf season is off to a fast start, with 25 of the large predators killed after a six-week archery season and just over a week of rifle hunting.
Biologists with Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks are hoping to reduce the number of wolves in the state in an effort to cut down on predation of game animals and livestock attacks. The FWP Commission this year approved an aggressive wolf hunting season that includes no statewide quota, a season longer than four months and trapping.
As of Thursday afternoon, hunters had killed 25 wolves. And the kill was well distributed, with wolves taken in 12 of the states 17 wolf management units.

In the wake of the violent rampage by Radcliffe Haughton last weekend, some state legislators plan to reintroduce a bill that would force domestic abusers, who are already required by state law to surrender any weapons, to prove theyve complied with the law. Haughton was under a four-year restraining order for domestic abuse.
But such a law wouldnt have helped in his case. Haughton may in fact have surrendered his weapon. But he just went out and bought another gun not from a store, but from one of the many private gun sellers, who are completely unregulated. |

One amazing thing about the recent spate of laws that make it easier to shoot people and get away with it is how much prosecutors hate them. Its an abomination, one Florida prosecutor told the Sun Sentinel, referring to the states stand your ground law at the center of the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin.
And now were hearing from Montanas county attorneys, sheriffs, and police chiefs, all of whom oppose the 2009 law that expanded the castle doctrine to give homeowners more leeway to kill potential intruders. |
