More specifically, we talked about the real reason for that group's intense hostility to the right to keep and bear arms--as explained in a book co-written by CSGV executive director Josh Horwitz, 'Guns, Democracy, and the Insurrectionist Idea'). "When Porsche unveiled the Boxster, the mid-engined sports car was an automotive revelation. Gott in himmel, what a chassis! Unfortunately, the cars designers were inspired by Dr. Doolittle's Pushmi-pullyu. Worse, the Boxster's 2.7-liter powerplant replaced a vampire's victim as the dictionary definition of anemic. The Sultans of Stuttgart had good solid marketing reasons for creating a gutless wonder, from an understandable desire to suck-in entry level buyers to not stepping on the venerable 911's torquetasic toes. By the time Porsche blessed the Boxster with a proper engine, it was too late. ... The Ruger SR40 is like that: a great gun with a fatal flaw. And one major difference: the SR40 is one handsome son of a gun." ... |

... "Americans have always liked their guns. And some Americans REALLY like their guns. Whether to hunt, protect their homes or defend themselves from a tyrannical government, many Americans believe that the government has no right to restrict their access to firearms. But those who want to minimize gun violence, Congress, and the Courts have thought otherwise. ... And does the high level of American gun violence (more than 31,000 firearms fatalities in 2006, according to the CDC) mean it is time to reassess an idea that made sense more than 200 years ago?" ... -------
Submitter's Note: Actually it was 30,896 deaths in 2006, of which more than half (16,883) were suicides and, as numerous studies have shown, firearm availability does not affect suicide rates. So if firearms 'cost' about 14,000 lives a year, what are the benefits of gun ownership? Conservative estimates are that there are one million or more DGUs every year; if 5% of DGUs save a life (and remember, most people do not pull out a gun unless they reasonably believe that their are in immediate danger of death or great bodily harm) then guns save about fifty thousand lives a year. In other words, 3.5 lives are saved for every 1 life lost. |
