GA: Ga. church shooting shows attacker aided by law disarming victims

"Since when is it a legitimate and constitutional function of government for legislators to impose their religious convictions on others under force of law, and how is that different from Taliban-imposed Sharia? That's the real issue, and thus one so-called 'progressives' refuse to even acknowledge, let alone object to if they are to be consistent with that church/state 'wall of separation' they rush to erect every time it suits their agenda."

"What does his recent compilation of data over the last few years tell us? Per Howard, 'It tells you that the NRA is protecting anti-gun incumbents, and advancing anti-gun challengers, under cover of phony grades and lies.'"

Fortress Defense Consultants, headed up by Frank Sharpe, offered a Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds course in northeastern Illinois. Exactly ten students were present, all civilians, and all but one former alumni of either Fortress Defense or John Farnam (Fortress hosts Farnam to Indiana at least once each year).

Sharpe was assisted in the medical instruction phase by Tony Luna and Dave Zielke, both having extensive EMS training and experience. Also, Dr. David Tyssen assisted in the afternoon force-on-force practical application of what we learned in the morning.

In my last post I criticized the emerging Second Amendment standard of review and specifically the decision in Heller II, to channel into Scrutiny Land, a straightforward gun ban question that might have been decided under a more objective common use standard. More broadly I questioned whether scrutiny analysis is a true substantive filter or a screen for something less savory.

In this post I consider another possible standard of review, the undue burden standard from the abortion cases, and use it to sharpen my earlier point about the common use standard.

Real Americans dont cower

Alex Wagner, a journalist and political commentator for MSNBC, recently offered her analysis of a recent school violence rampage in Ohio with, Cowering under a desk is indeed the only recourse for people facing life threatening situations in a school.

Now, Miss Wanger favors the abolition of the Second Amendment.

It would seem that gun aficionados are cut from a different cloth than those like Miss Wagner who would ban all guns.

Cower in the face of life-threatening attack?

Only neutered and feminized Americans would do such a, well, cowardly thing...

Terri Ivester was on her way to a family christening in Chicago when she ran into a snag at the security checkpoint at Logan Airport.
Terri Ivester says, The TSA agent holds my backpack up, and um, says theres a water bottle in this backpack, Im going to have to take that.
Thats when Ivester says the agent left the area with her bag.
George Nacara, who is head of the TSA at Logan, tells the I-Team that passengers have the right to stay with their bags.
Ivester says she continued through the security checkpoint and she never gave it another thought until she got dressed for the christening.
Im ready to put on my jewelry and I cant find it, she says.

There are some anti-self-defense activists who feel so strongly about depriving Americans of their Second Amendment rights that they work to deprive these same Americans of their First Amendment rights as well.

Weve seen this in vandalism of our Guns Save Life highway signs along the Interstates.

...Were far from the only pro-civil rights voice to face activists who wish to return to the Medieval times prohibition on the common mans right to possess weapons by depriving the rest of us of our First Amendment right to free speech as well.

Today, our friend Kurt Hofmann is facing the similar antics from the freedom-hating left.

Pepper Spray: Dont bet your life on a can of spice

Pepper spray has gained a reputation among many who dont know any better as a magic non-lethal weapon for personal defense. Many people believe that a can of spray will repel the most violent of attackers. In reality though, real world civilian use performance of these sprays leaves a great deal to be desired.

OC sprays can cause coughing, shortness of breath, involuntary closing of the eyelids, extreme tearing and sometimes nausea. Under ideal circumstances, these effects, after a short period of time, will temporarily subdue or incapacitate someone exposed to the spray.

The real world is seldom perfect, and as such these sprays seldom work as effectively as advertised.

A judge set a tentative trial date for George Zimmerman, who shot Trayvon Martin to death, but only if Zimmerman cannot prove self-defense.
Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder for the shooting of the unarmed teen, said he acted in self-defense, citing Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law.
Seminole County Judge Debra Nelson said the self-defense hearing will be held 45 days before the trial, which is tentatively set for June 10. After the late April hearing, Nelson will determine whether Zimmerman will go to trial.

The last mistake Dan Fredenberg made was getting killed in another man's garage.

It was Sept. 22, and Fredenberg, 40, was upset. He strode up the driveway of a quiet subdivision here to confront Brice Harper, a 24-year-old who had become romantically involved with Fredenberg's young wife. But as he walked through Harper's open garage door, Fredenberg was doing more than stepping uninvited onto someone else's property. He was unwittingly walking onto a legal landscape reshaped by laws that have given homeowners new leeway to use force inside their own homes.

Bazelon drew this summary from a letter written by the prosecutor who declined to try Harper, but her word choice approached, claims fails to convey the urgency of the situation. Heather Fredenberg backed up Harpers testimony that Bazelons approach was in fact aggressive, and that Harper warned her husband that he had a gun. She also told police her husband would have tried to kill Harper if hed gotten his hands on him. Whats more, Harper says he pointed his gun at Fredenberg and told him to stop, but Fredenberg continued toward him.

A string of shootings at convenience stores and other businesses across Indiana has left suspects dead and sparked a debate over whether clerks should be allowed to carry weapons and use them.

At least four attempted robberies in the state have ended in fatal shootings in the past month. In all of those cases, the clerks fired back.

In fact, there are an estimated 60 million gun owners nationwide who own more than 260 million guns. So who are these people? Anarchists? John Wayne wannabes? The unhinged? That's something The Denver Post wanted to find out when it asked on Facebook: "Why do you own a gun?" The question is simple enough.

The answers, as it turns out, are a lot more complicated.

Heresy! No gun writer is allowed to advocate for the .22 LR as a self defense caliber, right? Well, I suppose I didnt get that memo. Maybe it is in the spam filter of my e-mail account.

Dont worry It is not my intention to start a holy war over which caliber is better than another. I think we can all agree that given a center mass shot, any of the major calibers, such as the .357 Magnum and .45 ACP, are superior to the .22 LR in terms of stopping bad people from doing bad things.

But perhaps nowhere has the silence been louder than on the issue of gun violence.

Though it is barely three months since the nation saw back-to-back massacres at a Batman premiere in Colorado and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, gun violence has failed to attract the candidates' interest.

This is true despite the horrific January 2011 shooting in Arizona when a deranged college student opened fire at a shopping center, killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, and gravely wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Concerning Former Chafee assistant faces 2 term senator in district 34, I find it telling Democrat Catherine Cool Rumsey equated supporting the 2nd amendment of the Bill of Rights with hunting.

The 2nd amendment is not about hunting although hunting is made possible through the liberties and freedom from tyranny we enjoy because of the 2nd amendment.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin Historical Review of Pennsylvania. [Note: This sentence was often quoted in the Revolutionary period. It occurs even so early as November, 1755, in an answer by the Assembly of Pennsylvania to the Governor, and forms the motto of Franklin's "Historical Review," 1759, appearing also in the body of the work. Frothingham: Rise of the Republic of the United States, p. 413. ]
