Fear of suspected terrorists living in their communities and the threat of more attacks caused a surge in gun sales in the days after Sept. 11, according to gun dealers and law enforcement statistics. Many of the buyers, dealers and experts say, are buying firearms for the first time.

Three letters to the editor included in link. One excerpt:

"The solution to the terrorist threat is not to eliminate carry-on bags and purses or to detain travelers over penknives and toenail clippers.

The solution lies not in the creation of an extensive new government bureaucracy of air marshals that will cost taxpayers billions a year, but the rethinking of the role of pilots and flight attendants on aircraft. We must create more wolves and fewer sheep." --Kenneth Adams

BOSTON (AP) -- An anonymous tip alone is not grounds for police to stop and frisk people, the Supreme Judicial Court affirmed Friday.

"An anonymous tip that someone is carrying a gun goes not, without more, constitute a reasonable suspicion to conduct a stop and frisk of that individual," Spina wrote. "...It was the defendant's right to ignore the officer."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens]
