The city of Cleveland became a little safer last Thursdaysafer for criminals. In what has become an annual spectacle, the city dumped more than 700 firearms into the Number 1 Basic Oxygen Furnace at the Cleveland Arcelor Mittal facility. The formerly useful weapons, collected in gun buyback programs in the city and surrounding communities in September, were subjected to temperatures of about 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit and 200 tons of molten iron. Heres a video of the actual event, but be warned, its difficult to watch. Its not clear how the city could buy back something it didnt own in the first place. |

They are called "airsoft guns," and as the name suggests, they use compressed air to shoot small plastic BB-gun type balls. While this may sound like a harmless toy, it can be very dangerous, both for a person being hit by one of the pellets as well as the person carrying the gun. A report from WMGT-TV in Macon, Georgia points out that these guns look very realistic and can easily be mistaken for a real weapon. "The realism is a lot better than when I was a kid. We had little plastic guns that were blue or yellow. Now they have actual weapon systems that look like real weapons," said George Welch of the Collier County, Florida Sheriff's Office. |

In a controversial new radio ad playing in Mason, TX, Crockett Keller, a state-certified gun safety instructor, says: "If you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class with no shame (sic). If you are a socialist liberal and or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class. You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law." |

About a month ago, Sandy Dziak and her husband were riding horses on their 20-acre property in Lake County when they were jolted by an explosion.
We heard what sounded like a cannon, Dziak said. And then we heard rounds whizzing over our heads.
Their neighbor was doing some target shooting on his property. But because bullets travel thousands of feet, the rounds were were flying onto and over the Dziaks property.
We approached the shooter, Dziak remembers, and asked him, Are you trying to kill us?
The man told them that he was within his rights and that there was nothing they could do about it. Dziak called police only to find out that the man was right. |

Carrying a concealed weapon becomes legal in Wisconsin on Tuesday, which could be depending on whom you ask the granting of a long-withheld right, a distressing introduction of safety and liability concerns or largely irrelevant.
Count Sheboygan-area law enforcement in the latter category.
"I think it's a very emotional issue with a lot of rhetoric behind it that, if looked at in an unemotional way and talked about rationally, I don't think it's that big of a deal," said Sheboygan Police Chief Christopher Domagalski. |

And if drones can be used for unmanned surveillance, does that also mean we should expect armed drones used as patrol?
Think about that for a moment.
I hope the same Second Amendment-loving folks who pushed for broader places to carry firearms will also rally behind an opposition to drones, which seem to completely contradict the heartbeat of the Constitution and its desire for citizen freedom and protection from over-reaching authority.
"You won't get any arguments from me," said Hammond. "Citizens will have to step up and demand that they are used properly." |

Dan Millin usually feels pretty safe. Yet he can't help noticing the growing heroin problem in Dane County and the random crimes that seem to be cropping up around it.
"I'm getting more concerned in Madison," said Millin, 55, of Monona, the owner of an information technology consulting company. "It's definitely not as safe as it was 35 years ago."
Millin, an experienced hunter, was one of 15 students in a recent concealed carry class at Madison Area Technical College. He plans to apply for a state permit to carry a concealed weapon when the law takes effect Tuesday, and he likely will occasionally carry a handgun. |

Both people who wrote letters to the editor recently about the countys decision to prohibit guns in county buildings missed the point.
County Board Chairwoman Tara Johnson and first vice chairwoman Jill Billings went to Madison and were vocal against government removing or restricting rights during the debate over collective bargaining for public workers.
Now they have both voted to do just that, allowing government to restrict peoples rights. |

State officials decided Friday to allow concealed weapons in the state Capitol and other state buildings under Wisconsin's new law that allows those with permits to carry weapons in public places.
The law is set to go into effect Tuesday.
"We must respect [a citizen's] right to keep and bear arms under the U.S. and Wisconsin Constitutions," Department of Administration Secretary Michael Huebsch said in a statement.
Huebsch said weapons will be prohibited in buildings that provide services for mentally ill patients or criminals and buildings that store combustible materials. |

Business owners and government entities who don't want concealed weapons in their buildings can post signs warning people to keep them out, leaving owners to navigate between offending safety advocates and gun supporters, as well as dealing with some surprisingly sticky legal issues.
The law absolves anyone who allows weapons in their buildings of liability. But the statutes don't extend that same immunity to people who ban them. In a counterintuitive twist, some attorneys contend that means someone injured in a fight in an establishment that bans concealed weapons could sue on the grounds the business prevented them from defending themselves with a concealed weapon. |

On Friday, it became official: Wisconsinites with a concealed carry permit can bring their guns in any public building they want. Members of the state Senate have said they will likely ban guns in the galleries, but Assembly leaders said they will follow the Department of Administrations lead and allow guns at their meetings.
While this board sees no reason to need a gun while watching an Assembly debate, we recognize that this law is not entirely about practicality. |
