I have a thing for pocket guns. I estimate that about 25 or more have passed through my hands over the last 3 years, sometimes I buy the same gun twice. There is something about a small gun that makes it feel more like part of my hand than feeling like I am holding an object. Hard to explain but there is no weight to speak of, up front. The weight sits in the palm of my hand and I like that. |
Okay, you just bought a gun. Now what?

In the last 6 months I have seen many people in the gun stores looking to buy their first gun. Most ask for a .22 because they never shot before and are intimidated by larger calibers. Another feature they ask for is small enough to carry every day without showing. Last but not least, it must be cheap. The look on some faces when they are told the price of a gun is priceless; well actually it does have a price. :-) |

Marvel Weaver, the Lansing teen who was shot in the buttocks by a man he randomly attacked with a stun gun, was sentenced to a year in the Ingham County jail today.
"This world has become an ugly, violent, and vicious place," Ingham County Circuit Judge William Collette said before handing down the sentence. "People like this gentleman, who frankly doesn't look like the nastiest human being on earth, can be walking down the street and minding his own business and be set upon by people who find it funny to go out and attack others on the street."

More anti-gun hysteria.
This time it wasnt even school related. Its also pretty weird. A Rome, NY teenager is now facing weapons charges for playing with Airsoft guns in the courtyard of his friends apartment building.
A concerned resident called the police after seeing the boys, thinking they may be real guns. Police came out, investigated the toys, gave them back to the boys and told them to be careful. |

Independent candidate for mayor Mike Collins, a former police officer, told me recently so-called stand your ground laws are invitations to violence that undermine the police.
Incumbent Mayor Mike Bell agrees.
So both men will want to speak out, in no uncertain terms, against a bill that goes beyond Floridas, or any other states, stand your ground law state House Bill 203. Some have called it the kill at will bill. |

The state Supreme Court sided against the Fremont County Attorney's Office.
"The prosecutors' assertions that Wyoming law prohibits shooting an unarmed man were inaccurate, and the record leaves no doubt that the prosecutors misinformed the jury in that regard," Wyoming Chief Justice Marilyn Kite stated in her opinion. "In this case, the prosecutors' repeated misstatements regarding the law of self-defense were prejudicial and were not remedied by the jury instructions or subsequent arguments by the prosecutors or defense counsel." |

Akron City Council voted Sept. 30 to approve a resolution presented by Councilwoman Linda Omobien (D-at large) that states opposition to Ohio House Bill 203, which proposes a stand your ground self-defense law.
Omobien said the proposed law would be detrimental in Ohio because it would expand the circumstances under which a person would have no duty to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense. |

Call this speculation, but in June, the Obama-ordered CDC study on defensive uses of guns came out. According to the study, Americans use guns for defensive purposes at least as often as they are used to commit crimes. The CDCs report even cites studies that put the number of defensive uses of firearms as high as 3 million times each year. Self-defense can be an important crime deterrent, said the CDC, and when the victim uses a gun for self-defense, studies have found consistently lower injury rates compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies. |

Women often get touted as bigger supporters of gun control in the United States than men. But it's not often mentioned that the number of women who own guns has also been rising rapidly over the past decade. Between 2005 and 2011, the percentage of American women who own a gun nearly doubled, rising from 13 to 23 percent, according to Gallup poll data. |

With Gov. Jerry Brown days away from deciding the fate of a stack of gun bills, Second Amendment advocates delivered to the Governors Office about 67,000 signed letters Thursday imploring him to veto the 14 prospective laws.
California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and these 14 measures are particularly onerous, said Craig DeLuz, a legislative advocate for the California Association of Federal Firearms Licensees. |

Earlier this year, Isaacs case became a testing ground for an aspect of South Carolinas Stand Your Ground gun law, which gives an armed person broad latitude to shoot and kill anyone whom the armed person feels is threatening him. Isaacs attorney, Mark Schnee of Columbia, had argued that Isaac should be granted immunity from prosecution under the states Stand Your Ground law.
...
During his trial, Isaac took the stand and told the jury he shot Corbitt because he felt Corbitt was threatening him while he was breaking into Corbitts home. |

The appellate court did not directly address potential inequity in how the law was applied to a black woman versus the biracial Zimmerman, Patrik Jonsson wrote for the Christian Science Monitor.
Rather, the appellate court found that the judge erred in telling the jury that Alexander had to prove that her shot was in self-defense.
Ed.: No. She still has to prove it was self-defense, but by a preponderance of the evidence instead of the erroneously-instructed beyond a reasonable doubt. |

On Tuesday, October 1, 2013, the New Jersey Second Amendment Society (NJ2AS) filed a friend of the Court brief in a State Supreme Court appeal challenging New Jerseys justifiable need requirement to obtain a Permit to Carry a Handgun.
...
NJ2AS attorney, Capricci Bilandal was the lead attorney on the brief with significant contributions made by Second Amendment Foundation attorney, David Jensen, including an exhaustive explanation of the legislative history of the justifiable need clause. We are very proud of the cooperative effort made by both attorneys and appreciate their hard work to successfully complete the project under a strict deadline. The brief can be read here. |

However, it is not Harrisons 22-gauge that is under significant reform fire. When asked his opinion on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which congressional proposals define as magazines holding more than 10 rounds, Harrison immediately reflected on his wartime past.
I want every weapon the government has. Pushing the safe door closed and spinning the great gold dial that keeps his rifles safely locked away, Harrison continued with a note of severity in his voice, Believe me, I have seen what a tyrannical government can do. If they get to have guns like that, then I want to have guns like that. |

As previously reported, with support from the NRA, Maryland citizen groups filed legal challenges to the ban on semi-automatic rifles and standard capacity magazines, as well as the implementation of the Handgun Qualification License requirement that took effect today.
In the first round, a federal judge declined to issue a temporary restraining order, but urged the parties to move forward quickly towards a full hearing on the merits of the challenges. Attorneys will report to the Court this week on a schedule to move the cases along promptly. |
