Nothing "common sense" in gun control

"One of the favorite phrases of the would-be gun grabbers is the phrase 'common sense gun control'. The argument is that regulating guns, at least to some extent, is perfectly normal and necessary. Using that particular terminology is designed to paint anyone who opposes such regulations as lacking in that very same common sense."

"The truth of the matter is that gun control isn't common sense in any way." ...

Campus guns debate should cool off

"Not long after a gunman ran through the University of Texas at Austin last week, the debate over whether or not students should be allowed to conceal and carry handguns on campuses restarted. The shooting lasted only a few moments, but the debate has been raging for years and does not appear to be going away any time soon."

"Those who favor guns on campuses have appealed to their desires not to be sitting ducks subject to the violent whims of a mad gunman. Others argue just as subjectively that the shooting was proof that guns are too dangerous in the hands of students and are generally distrustful of the armed." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Except that the arguments aren't "subjective". There is a huge body of evidence showing A) guns save lives and B) lawful carry on campus endangers no one but criminals.

"As the Supreme Court begins its new term, its sixth with John G. Roberts Jr. as chief justice, the reality is that this is the most conservative court since the mid-1930s. Since Richard Nixon ran for president in 1968, conservatives have sought to change constitutional law ..."

"During the first years of the Roberts court, it has consistently ruled in favor of corporate power, such as in holding that corporations have the First Amendment right to spend unlimited amounts in independent political campaigns. For the first time in American history, the high court has struck down laws regulating firearms as violations of the Second Amendment and held that the Constitution protects a right of individuals to possess guns. ..." ...

"Yesterday I ... [read] UC Irvine law school dean Erwin Chemerinksy, who avoided silly metaphors and instead made the provocative and straightforward argument in the L.A. Times that 'this is the most conservative court since the mid-1930s.' Thats a claim worth thinking about. ..." ...

"As for the Second Amendment cases, a very impressive list of liberal legal scholars lined up behind the winning propositions that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms ... and that the 14th Amendment applies that right to the states ... Again, some liberals were unhappy with those decisions. Guess what? Some very high-profile legal conservatives were unhappy with them too. ..." ...

Praxis: "The Damned Engineers" -- A study in character and command.

"I picked up a copy of a book I read long ago at the gun show this weekend for the lordly price of $2.50. Entitled The Damned Engineers by Janice Holt Giles, it details the heroic tale of the 291st Combat Engineer Battalion under Colonel David Pergrin and the role they played in stopping the German assault in the Battle of the Bulge."

"I picked up the book just in time for a couple nights of insomnia, and finished it this morning. There are many valuable lessons in this book, but the most striking to me is that the 291st stuck against overwhelming numbers when everybody else was pulling out largely because of the character of their commander and the combat ethic that he had inculcated in his unit. ..." ...

... "Here in Alabama, most of the new units I'm aware of standardize on Woodland pattern BDUs (Battle Dress Utility). This is true partly because it is cheaper and easier to find than other patterns (the thrift stores being loaded with them) but mostly because it is a good pattern year round for the South. (Yes, I know there are better patterns, but what we're talking about here is price and availability for newbies who lack funds.)"

"But BDUs, like everything else, wear out. I teach my newbies down here to recycle as much of the old uniform as possible." ...

Drunken gun-slinging not okay

"Citizens of Tennessee who are handgun permit holders are now allowed to carry loaded guns into bars. Tennessee is the latest of four states with similar laws. Twenty other states have no laws regarding the issue, effectively making it legal to carry a loaded gun. The push for looser restrictions on gun control is both unsettling and dangerous."

"The strongest argument for the right to bear arms is self-defense. People do not want to be left defenseless if they are mugged or attacked on the street, in their homes or at the local bar. Of course, they are overlooking the obvious: A gun is a deadly weapon. The function of a gun is to hurt or kill. Bringing more weapons into a conflict can only serve to escalate the violence." ...

"Ever since the middle of Bill Clintons second term, the highest-profile issue that the American left has been unable to push in any major way has been gun regulations. ..."

"Credit for some of this has to go to the National Rifle Association which has built up a powerful lobbying force and also been more than happy to endorse candidates who are Democrats but in favor of gun rights."

"That position has rankled some conservatives over the years but especially so this year with Republicans hoping to retake the House and depose such liberal stalwarts as Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada). The NRA's bipartisan stance is potentially harming those hopes as its endorsed 39 Democratic candidates in the House ..." ...

"Mr. TRENDE: Remember, she comes from upstate New York, a district that doesn't have a lot of Democrats. So she just doesn't have this base to rally around her."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance?
