Popular gun companies Smith & Wesson (SWHC) and Sturm Ruger (RGR) are among the best stocks in America in 2015. It's a reminder of just how profitable these businesses are.
Smith & Wesson has skyrocketed over 80% this year. To put that in perspective, if the stock were in the S&P 500, it would be the second best performer this year, behind only Netflix (NFLX, Tech30). |

In the wake of the shooting in Roseburg, Oregon Democratic candidate Katie McGinty is calling on Sen. Pat Toomey to take legislative action.
After the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, Toomey co-sponsored legislation to expand background checks. The bill failed to make it out of the Senate. Last month, the McGinty campaign accused the Senator of backing away from this legislation because of pressure from a pro-gun group. |

Under state law, people in Oregon could carry concealed firearms on college campuses like the one where a gunman killed nine people and wounded several others on Thursday. However, Umpqua Community College has been established as a gun-free zone thanks to a loophole in state law that has made every third-level institution in the state almost entirely gun-free. Heres how that works.

Two academics argue support for gun rights is misguided because its built on the foundation of American slavery in a piece for The Atlantic published Wednesday.
Gun-rights advocates have waged a relentless battle to gut what remains of Americas lax and inadequate gun regulations, Saul Cornell and Eric Ruben open in the article. But what the advocates do not acknowledgeand some courts seem not to understandis that their arguments are grounded in precedent unique to the violent world of the slaveholding South.

Los Angeles police officials this week defended officers who privately purchased Smith & Wesson handguns at a special discount, saying they did not believe the officers violated city ethics rules when buying the guns after evaluating them for a new department contract.
The purchase was scrutinized in a recent report by Inspector General Alex Bustamante, who said the officers in the unit that evaluated the Smith & Wesson pistols used their relationship with the gun company to get a special discount for officers in the same unit, a possible violation of city ethics rules. |

The Umpqua Community College shooting has raised questions about the number of guns in the U.S. But data on this subject are unreliable.
Heres why:
U.S. law explicitly prohibits law enforcement agencies from collecting or releasing statistics that could provide an accurate picture of gun ownership. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is barred from releasing gun traces to the public and cant require gun dealers to turn over inventories. The FBI, which is in charge of federal background checks, is required to destroy purchaser records within 24 hours.

A massacre on an Oregon community college campus has claimed nine lives. A shootout in the New York borough of Brooklyn last month had bystanders diving for cover and led to the death of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's legal aide. Two television journalists were killed by a gunman while broadcasting in Virginia on August 28. These, and other, incidents and the fact that murder rates are spiking in the United States after decades of decline have put the issue of gun control back in the public spotlight. |

When Hillary said "What is wrong with us, that we cannot stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby, and the gun manufacturers they represent?", she understood that she was picking a fight on an issue she can't win.

If the stated purpose of the gun control law is to save lives we can clearly see that criminal behavior will not be affected as they have already made a conscious decision to violate the law. To state that a creature, who is willing to violate Malum In Se through the act of murder, robbery, rape, etc., will be dissuaded from using a firearm during the aforementioned acts by a new Malum Prohibitum statute is the height of childish naivete and blind, emotionally driven foolishness. |

Ive noticed that the answers in life are often simple but rarely easy. For instance, if I want to lose 10 pounds, the simplest but hardest solution is to eat less and jog more. The most complicated but easiest solution is to consult with doctors and take pills and complain about my thyroid and eventually give up and start a fat acceptance group. A lot of people these days choose the latter. Its time consuming and it wont accomplish much, but at least it can be done from the couch. |

When a gunman killed eight students and a teacher at an Oregon college last week, he also revived a debate on the need to change firearm laws and whether the school's "gun-free zone" policy only made easier for him.
President Barack Obama quickly pleaded for stricter gun laws to prevent similar tragedies, angering conservatives such as Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee. "It's clear that gun-free zones are sitting-duck zones," Huckabee said. |

The Nassau County district attorney's office loosened the policy last week but still prohibits prosecutors from carrying guns at work, saying that could be dangerous or discomfiting in a job known for sensitive, unpredictable situations.
