The accidental discharge Monday of a security guards handgun in a staff bathroom at Oxford Community Schools in Oakland County had at least one parent saying the incident points out the risk of arming adults in schools to prevent shootings.
The suggestion to arm adults in schools, including teachers, gains attention after each school shooting, including the tragic rampage last year at Oxford High School that left four students dead.
Mondays incident at Oxford Middle School, which is on the border of Oxford Village and Oxford Township, occurred when a school security guard was using the single-stall staff restroom, near the field house, and he placed his handgun on a door hook, the school district said in a statement. |

The principle that a mans home is his castle goes back to the days of the Roman Republic. It was adopted into English law and came with the colonists to America. Today, twenty-three states have a castle doctrine. These can vary slightly from state to state, with some states narrowing their right to use deadly force against an intruder. In some states, one must prove that an intruder attempted to commit a felony. Thirty-six states have a Stand Your Ground law, a right to self-defense using deadly force if deemed reasonably necessary to defend against certain violent crimes. The rest of the states have Duty to Retreat laws. |

When he gets irate, there is a look that overcomes him, Lidgett said when he described the interaction. It is a look that Wendy has seen before. Wendy has been beaten by him, shes been strangled by him, shes been raped by him. She was also beaten by a baseball bat by him.
He added, She knows that look. When she came out and showed the photograph she saw that look.
Lidgett said Pitts began revving up the ATV evidence shows the motorized vehicle was on. Pitts then grabbed the phone held by Howard, threw it into the bushes and approached her in a creepy way, Lidgett said. Howard pulled out a gun and shot him twice, he added. |

More than two dozen churches and a socially conservative organization this week filed a federal lawsuit challenging New York's restrictions on guns in sensitive areas.
The lawsuit is the latest effort to challenge New York's law approved in the wake of a Supreme Court decision that found a century-old concealed carry law was unconstitutional. State lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul agreed to a measure that limited where guns can be carried as well as created new requirements for a concealed carry license. |

Addressing gun violence is a key public-policy issue for the bishops of New York state, said Dennis Poust, executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference.
The bishops are very concerned about the proliferation of guns in our society, whether it be handguns or assault rifles, he said.
Poust said the states bishops were frustrated by a June 23 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that granted a constitutional right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense. The decision overrode a longstanding New York law requiring anyone seeking that right to provide a specific need for doing so. Poust said the Supreme Courts ruling was not helpful in establishing some reasonable limits with the right to bear arms. |

Massachusetts law places severe restrictions on the possession and purchase of firearms, including the ability to obtain a license to possess handguns, if convicted of nonviolent misdemeanors.
The Supreme Court on Monday vacated the ruling by a lower court that found the Massachusetts law constitutional.
The high court also sent the case back to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in light of its June ruling in the New York gun case. |

An alleged drunk home invader was shot on September 25th and law enforcement has determined the case to be self-defense.
A 22-year-old became heavily intoxicated and attempted to break into the home of a couple. The husband attempted to restrain the invader from breaking in and the two got into a fight on the threshold of the front door. It was then that the wife grabbed her newly purchased revolver, of which she got the day before, and fired shots at the invader to attempt to save her husband.
The husband only sustained minimal injures from the fight, but the shooting from the wife lead the invader to be pronounced dead on-scene. |

The case in question, Morin v. Lyver, centers around a controversial Massachusetts law that imposes strict restrictions on the possession and purchase of handguns, including the need for a license in order to purchase or posses a pistol. The law also includes a lifetime ban on purchasing handguns on anyone convicted of a nonviolent misdemeanor involving the possession or use of guns.
The U.S. District Court of Massachusetts originally found the law constitutional, but the Supreme Court on Monday ordered that ruling vacated and the case remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit for further consideration in light of New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. v. Bruen. |

Ted Budd, North Carolinas Republican nominee for Senate, is one of two sitting U.S. congressmen to own a gun store, and his advertises on its website an insurance provider that supports gun owners who face domestic violence charges. Some advocates and family members of gun violence victims have called insurance plans like thiswhich have also been advertised by the NRAmurder insurance.
Budds store, ProShots, is located in Rural Hall, North Carolina, and in advertising U.S. Law Shield insurance, the Senate candidate seems unnervingly willing to help customers who might use their guns from ProShots to hurt or threaten partners or family members. |

The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire has been with us for more than half a century. Relatively popular in rifles, its also been a favorite option for rimfire revolvers. Semiautos? Not so much. Today, other than KelTecs PMR 30 and Rock Island Armorys XT 22 Magnum series, there are...well, thats pretty much it. Until now, with Walthers introduction of the WMP or Walther Magnum Pistol.
Why are there so few? Mostly because its hard to get this cartridge to function reliably in a semiautomatic pistol. Jens Krogh, vice president of marketing and product development at Walther, said he believes the company has cracked that code. |

Guns save lives, especially after a hurricane. Its a fact Floridians have known for a long time. Even Gov. Ron DeSantis mentioned this when he issued a not-so-subtle warning to would-be criminals seeking to take advantage of Hurricane Ian survivors:
You never know what may be lurking behind somebodys home. And I would not want to chance that if I were you, given that we are a Second Amendment state, DeSantis said Saturday.
Hurricane Ian taught us several lessons and reinforced several more especially the need for dependable, modern firearms to secure ourselves, our families and our property. |

Philadelphias attempt to create new gun restrictions was once again defeated by the judicial branch striking down a new city policy.
In response to a September shooting that killed Parks & Recreation worker Tiffany Fletcher, Mayor Jim Kenney signed an executive order banning guns and other weapons from city recreational facilities.
We will not tolerate the endangerment of children and families while they are in the care of our treasured community spaces, and we must do everything we can to protect the public, as well as the dedicated staff that make these facilities run, Kenney said in a statement. |

The NICS process was never intended to hinder the ability of law-abiding firearms consumers by requiring the forced collection of unnecessary personal consumer data in bulk, Michael Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gun Works, said in a press release. Neither the ATF nor the FBI can act beyond authority of Congress and violate the Constitution by furthering the ultimate goal of creating an illegal firearms owner database.

even with a longstanding general concern for public safety, history lacks direct examples about felons specifically, he wrote. But just because there are no straightforward examples does not mean the Courts historical inquiry stops there.
In truth, theres no indication in the historical record that the authors of the Second Amendment ever intended to ban those convicted of felonies from possessing firearms. That goes double for the current lifetime ban that doesnt allow convicted felons (of federal crimes which includes non-violent ones) to have their rights restored after serving their sentence and paying their debt to society. |

The purpose of drawing your handgun from its carry position is to shoot your intended target. Whether drawn in combat (self-defense of an immediate violent physical threat) or in competition (shooting a pre-planned set array or stage of targets), the handgun must be rapidly deployed as to deliver the first shot on target as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Whether the go button is an active threat (personal combat) or in competition (shot timer), when it comes time to draw that muzzle from holster to target, shooting is shooting. In both scenarios the shooter must rely on their skill and training to make effective round placement on the target. |
