The U.S. terror investigation that has hauled in hundreds of Middle Easterners is being conducted with closed court hearings and sealed documents on a scale legal experts say may be unprecedented.
As part of what Attorney General John Ashcroft has called the biggest criminal investigation in U.S. history, federal authorities have detained more than 500 people without releasing the paperwork that usually accompanies nearly any type of court proceeding. |

In what observers are calling a novel approach against gun control, two groups have launched a petition drive to force the Department of Justice to enforce gun rights with the same zeal it enforced civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s.
The groups CitizensOfAmerica.org and KeepAndBearArms.com say they would like to see Attorney General John Ashcroft back his earlier voiced support for the Second Amendment with action.... |

Advocates of a ban on guns in Utah churches and schools quietly have been gathering more signatures, despite their failure to get an initiative on the state ballot last year.
"Our focus is on the rural counties," said Dave Jones of Safe to Learn, Safe to Worship Coalition. "We haven't needed any publicity or fanfare. We simply go to places where people gather, explain what we're doing and ask for signatures." |

"In the days after the terrorist attack on America, quite a few law-abiding Massachusetts citizens realized that it might be a good time to buy a gun for self-defense. They then found out quite to their surprise that they could not just walk into a gun dealership and legally purchase a gun."

At Washingtons request, NATO will soon deploy surveillance aircraft for anti-terrorist operations in the United States in response to the attacks, NATO officials said, an unprecedented use of foreign military forces to defend the U.S. homeland.
NATO OFFICIALS would not say why the United States had asked for the airborne warning and control system (AWACS) planes to be deployed there or whether they would be used to free up U.S. aircraft for deployment in other regions. |

America went on nationwide alert Sunday amid fears of another terrorist attack in the United States. U.S. aircraft flew combat air patrol missions over professional football games and televisions Emmy Awards were postponed again as the State Department and congressional leaders warned Americans that there was a very high chance that terrorists would retaliate for the U.S. bombing in Afghanistan. |

Authorities found a "cache of bombs" and "more than 12,000 rounds of ammunition" they believe belonged to a survivalist group. They arrested one man and were seeking another.
Also found inside five campers parked in a rural area of western Illinois were bomb-making instruction manuals, black powder, electronic arming devices and a small amount of ammonium nitrate. |

"I expected a war on terrorism, not confiscating crochet hooks from grannies. ... Now we're calling out the national guard, state by state, where martial law could be imposed at any moment against any individual, citizen or alien. Just what kind of a war is this? Who, or what, is really at the helm of our government?
Do our citizens CARE? Or are they too frightened to see objectively what perils face us?" --Dorothy Anne Seese |

"This resource is new and far from complete. It is made available now just to get some information, however minimal, posted to help educate the general public about the serious necessity to arm ourselves while traveling. And this without compromising our precious God given right freedom to move about freely and without depending on government sanctioned police state tactics lulling us into a false sense of security."...

I haven't seen this on any RKBA sites yet. Ann Landers (board member of the organization formerly called HCI) actually published a letter from Charlton Heston in one of her columns last month.
It was in her 9/27/01 column, but with the WTC issues, many of us missed it. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers" delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.' A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power." [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)] |
