"Legislation requiring 'smart gun' technology in handguns will be considered again by state lawmakers today."

"The technology allows only recognized users to fire handguns."

"The childproof handgun bill passed the Senate in previous sessions but was not considered by the Assembly. The legislation was amended last week and is expected to be voted on at today's sessions."

"Bill sponsors said the amendments addressed concerns of competitive shooters and gun collectors by stating that childproof handguns will not be mandated until the technology is both commercially available and proven reliable."

"Opponents say the technology does not exist and would be risky anyway. They also say the bill could hurt sportsmen and small business owners."

NRA-endorsed politician calls for expanded gun registration

"[NRA executive vice president Wayne] LaPierre urges gun owners to 'throw your full support behind those candidates who 'support your rights.' ... Why, then, has the NRA thrown its support behind a candidate who endorses the expansion of Sarah Brady's gun registration program?"

"In 2000, Colorado voters passed an unjust and unconstitutional law requiring gun registration for private sales at gun shows. On May 12, 2002, Senator Wayne Allard told the Denver Post he 'would support legislation at the federal level that is identical to the state ballot initiative.' The Brady law and its Amendment 22 companion require gun buyers to file paperwork that is available on demand to the BATF. I.e., the Brady scheme registers guns and their owners with the federal government."

"Did the NRA demand that Allard change his position and support the repeal of the unconstitutional Brady law, rather than its expansion? No. Instead, the NRA endorsed Allard." (10/04/02)

White students rejected for admission to the U of MI appealed to the Supreme Court.

The two claim they were unconstitutionally denied admission because of their race. They want the high court to hear their case alongside another that tests the race-conscious admissions policy at the university's law school.

At issue is a scoring system for applicants that assigned a 20 pt bonus for black, Hispanic, American Indian applicants to the university's College of Literature, Science, Arts.

QUESTION:

If we're not supposed to consider race when hiring, firing, admitting into school, granting membership, etc., how can the racist policy misnamed "affirmative action" have ever gotten this far?

Solid editorial on how Americans these days base far too much on feelings, and far too little on facts. A worthy read, and worth sending to someone you may encounter who looks at a fact and says, "that's not my opinion."

One of many good, accurate statements:

"Everyone has an opinion about what's going on in the world, but not many come equipped with facts to substantiate their opinions. And, increasingly, they're not needed. I know this because I've found lately that if I demand facts from verbal adversaries, I risk being labeled a bully."

Tough choice for the NRA:

Republican John Sanchez "has indicated his support for a concealed-carry law, and he opposes a clause allowing cities to opt out of the law."

"In another First Amendment case, the court declined to consider whether Massachusetts was wrongly restricting target shooting at human images."

"The ban at some gun clubs includes human forms or likenesses of people like Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden. It's the only prohibition of its kind, and the challengers argued they had a free speech right to shoot at human pictures."

"Justices refused to review the 4-year-old Massachusetts law. The ban applies to gun clubs that have a special license for large-capacity weapons."

"State officials argued that they had a public safety reason for preventing the practice shooting. They also said that the court should not waste its time on a matter that affects only residents in one state."

"The law was challenged by a group that includes gun clubs, a minister, and a retired military officer who competes in wheelchair shooting events."

" 'There are far more gun owners in the Commonwealth who would like to shoot at a target of Osama bin Laden than there are persons who burn the American flag,' their attorney, Stephen Halbrook, told justices."

The "high" court also let stand a ruling against a man who purposely violated a South Carolina law prohibiting tatooing -- allowing a $500 fine to be issued against a man who chose to tattoo someone who willingly consented to the procedure.

"A police force will be left with a 750,000 legal bill and a public relations disaster today when it capitulates in a high-profile libel action brought by the BBC investigative reporter, Donal MacIntyre."

"The climbdown by Kent police is believed to mark the first successful libel action against a British police force. It is a severe embarrassment to the Sunday Telegraph, which first published the police's misplaced doubts about one of MacIntyre's programmes."

"The disputed edition of MacIntyre Undercover was broadcast on November 16 1999. Secretly filmed pictures showed employees at the Brompton home in Medway assaulting residents and using restraint practices similar to the discredited and potentially lethal 'pindown' technique."

"Police claimed MacIntyre had misled viewers about the level of abuse with selective editing, and said its investigation had been largely fruitless. It threatened to sue MacIntyre for the 50,000 it claimed to have spent on the inquiry."

And now they are paying for having made such threats and trashed his name, character and intentions.

"Such a system would have been of great use in the Washington case, in which six people were shot to death, because so far bullet fragments are virtually the only evidence."
