OFCC's Dan White, along with attorney Dan Ellis, attended the 2006 Firearms Law & The Second Amendment Symposium held at the George Mason School of Law in Arlington, Virginia on Saturday, October 7th.

Not only were the speakers very informative, but OFCC also made a lot of new friends with other pro-gun groups from some of the Eastern states. This networking will help by giving us valuable insight into what has and has not worked in other states, most of whom have had concealed carry laws longer than Ohio.

On October 6, 2005, Jim Siburt of Adena, OH was shot three times while on a routine repossession job for Rent-A-Center. Mr. Siburt and a co-worker made the short drive to Triadelphia, WV for their pre-arranged appointment with a deadbeat customer. They were given access to the home and went about their work. Just before loading the last piece of furniture, Charlie Brown, 35, suddenly confronted them and shot Mr. Siburt once in the stomach and twice in the shoulder with a .45 caliber handgun. Luckily, Mr. Siburt survived the encounter and the shooter was apprehended after law enforcement officers surrounded his car at a nearby gas station.

STRATFORD — Mayor James R. Miron often talks of making Stratford a more peaceful community.

But some Town Hall employees, town residents and political leaders are upset that Miron, elected the town's first mayor in November, may be prepared to enforce the peace himself by carrying a gun to Town Hall and public meetings.

THE THREE SCHOOL shootings that happened around the country in the past week were horrible. Sad. Inexplicably violent.

First there was that drifter, a guy who lived in his car, who walked into a Colorado school, held some girls hostage, then shot one as she tried to escape before killing himself. Then there was the disturbed teen who gunned down his school principal in Wisconsin. And finally, there was that truck driver in Pennsylvania who was so despondent that he entered the Amish school near his home, lined up some girls, and took them out, execution style, before killing himself.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her Republican challenger, former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, offer New York voters stark differences on major issues ranging from the war in Iraq to abortion rights.

Unlike many modern political campaigns where both major party candidates appeal to the vast political middle, New York's Senate race features, in Spencer, an arch conservative who contrasts sharply with Clinton.
She favors abortion rights. He does not.

...

She favors tough gun-control laws, Spencer said he will "oppose any efforts to revive the Clinton gun ban and oppose any other proposal to curtail the right to bear arms."

We are defined by what we fear. This has never been more evident than with the public reaction to three school shootings in a week.

That these occurred in Colorado and Wisconsin high schools and an Amish one-room school in Pennsylvania suggests that it may be hard to identify a common theme or prevention strategy.

That two of the shooters were adults apparently intent on molesting girls injects a new variable into the usual perpetrator profile of a student who has been bullied.

"Assault victim fatally shoots assailant outside Westlake Center"

Not 24 hours had elapsed after Monday's horror at Nickel Mines School when a bizarre e-mail arrived in my in-box.
"Another armed murderer has used the so-called Gun-Free-School-Zones law to simply walk onto school grounds and with impunity begin killing innocent children," it stated. "These dangerous criminals rely on the fact that no one on campus will be able to offer resistance. Congress passed the law in 1990, renewed it in 1995, and though it cannot stop murderers, it has enabled many, experts say.

Though there was little dissent among the primarily Republican candidates at Saturday’s forum hosted by the Pro Second Amendment Committee, two candidates warned the crowd of what may come from Democratic majorities in Washington and Denver.

Republican House District 55 candidate Bob Caskey said Sunday he thought Colorado Democrats, led by Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, would likely try to decimate gun owners’ rights.

Researchers identify five stages in the evolution of the hunter, and they say it's crucial that children begin hunting at an early age to keep them interested.

...

"It is very valid and scientifically supported," said Thomas Baumeister, education bureau chief for Fish, Wildlife & Parks. "You have to progress through all stages in order to come out in the philosopher stage, at which time you give back, where you become a hunter ed instructor or where they come over to the Legislature and support bills."

Who understands firearms better than an ex-cop? Police officers spend their entire careers dealing with guns. They are fully trained to handle all types of firearms, from pistols to shotguns. They know the characteristics of guns, their idiosyncracies and, above all, their potential dangers.

Legislation is now being considered in the state Senate (S-206) and Assembly (A-2158) to amend current laws governing firearms possession by retired law-enforcement officers.

One by one, they rose up as threats to be eliminated. One by one, they were shot down with the speed and skill of a sniper.

The menace was not international terrorists, local murderers, a deranged milkman in Amish country, or even rabid animals.

The danger that some perceived over the last two weeks were the most reasonable of gun-law ideas - and the firing squad was made up of Pennsylvania legislators.

In the wake of school shootings in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania during the last two weeks, a state legislator says he plans to introduce legislation that would allow teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons. Rep. Frank Lasee, R-Bellevue, said Wednesday that, while his idea may not be politically correct, it has worked effectively in other countries. "To make our schools safe for our students to learn, all options should be on the table," he said. "Israel and Thailand have well-trained teachers carrying weapons and keeping their children safe from harm. It can work in Wisconsin."

Given the awful tragedy that has befallen them, it's difficult to argue against Ron and Norma Molen's stand in favor of gun controls. I have children myself, but I don't think I can adequately understand the Molens' pain and suffering from the senseless gunshot murder of their son Steven. I greatly admire the Molens' courageous decision to publicly discuss this most painful of events. Despite the Molens' immense tragedy, their advocacy of gun controls is incorrect and adverse to a free society.

The expansion of the coalition builds upon the original group of 15 mayors, of which Amicone was a member, who convened in April for the first Mayors Summit on Illegal Guns in New York City.
