Harlon Carter, Mr. NRA, the man who turned Americas national rifle club into its formidable gun lobby, knew guns could kill peopleincluding the 15-year-old Mexican kid he blew away with a shotgun when he was 17. Believe it or not, the National Rifle Association began in 1871 committed to Firearms Safety Education, Marksmanship Training, Shooting for Recreationaccording to the sign displayed for years at its national headquarters. Its famous lobby sign with the edited version of the militia-less Second Amendment the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringedonly came a century later.

Another sickening mass shooting, and another dispiriting round of debates about the place of guns in American life. And, just as many of the gun-control measures proposed are not germane to the events people wish to see stopped, neither are many of the arguments about gun rights generally. Charles Cooke has taken on Bret Stephens. Rich Lowry has also examined the passionate non sequiturs. And, I suppose it falls to me to take on the assertion, made in the New York Times by Michael Schermer, that guns in the hands of citizens arent a bulwark against tyranny.

A murderer killed innocent people in Las Vegas. This was a horrific attack that caught our attention and drew our sympathy. That is why the anti-rights spokesmen repeated their usual ineffective proposals to disarm the people who didnt do it. The gun grabbers want to fill our opinions at a time when we feel empty and none of us have answers.
The anti-rights spokesmen made their usual claims.
None. Of. Those. Would. Change. A. Thing.
Here is what we know would work to deter the next mass murderer. |

In the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, some Metro Detroit law enforcement and advocates are stressing the need to explore measures locally and nationally to address gun violence.
Issues surrounding safety in public spaces in the wake of the massacre in Las Vegas were at the forefront of a Friday night panel discussion in Detroit. Nearly 60 concertgoers were killed Sunday and over 500 injured when a gunman opened fire on a crowd during a country music performance.
I will guarantee you that there was not one person who went to that concert in Las Vegas who thought for one second that they were in danger. , |

After a year of buying guns from residents throughout Northern New Mexico in an effort to reduce the number of firearms in the regions homes, a local nonprofit hosted a celebration Saturday evening to showcase artwork made from the scraps of weapons that had been dismantled. The event, a night of music, poetry and art held at the Center for Contemporary Arts, came as the nation continued to mourn victims of last weeks mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nev. The art, a total of 10 pieces, was forged by welding students and faculty at Santa Fe Community College. |

Gun control has been a significant topic of discussion for lawmakers since Sunday's mass shooting in Las Vegas. Investigators think Stephen Paddock used a device known as a bump stock to turn his semi-automatic rifles into fully automatic weapons. Many are now calling for a ban on bump stocks to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again. |

Its been almost a week since a gunman killed 58 people and injured hundreds more in Las Vegas. The shooter used a device called a bump stock to modify his gun so that it could function as an machine gun. Politicians have unified around one thing: further regulations around the bump stock. But dealers at a gun show in St. Charles this weekend said the demand for the bump stock is up.

Just as quickly as news broke last week of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, Democrats, progressives and those opposed to the Second Amendment were talking gun control. The debate rages after any publicized gun crime, and almost always circles back to two talking points. Gun control advocates say people shouldnt be able to have military-grade weapons, while Second Amendment supporters say a gun didnt kill the victims a person did.

MSNBC analyst Steve Schmidt claimed Friday it's harder to buy cough medicine in America than to buy 50 AK-47 assault rifles. Appearing as a panelist on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher," Schmidt stepped into a discussion on gun control and the Second Amendment in the wake of last Sunday's Las Vegas massacre with this odd statement. Following up fellow MSNBC analyst Harold Ford, Jr., Schmidt said the country's founding fathers could no more conceive of AK-47s or AR-15s capable of automatic fire than "they could've conceived a spaceship," Mediaite reports. |

Guns and tasers are both big sellers to law enforcement agencies and consumers, but their manufacturers' stocks have very different qualities for investors. Gun sales are extremely cyclical. They rise when Democrats are in national office or after unusually publicized mass shootings take place, and fall when Republicans have control of the gun control discussion. |

In the wake of the Las Vegas attack at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, the culture of country music and its relationship with guns has come under a lot of scrutiny as policymakers, the media, pundits, and just ordinary people try and make sense of this senseless act of violence. Keep in mind that country music had absolutely nothing to do with Stephen Paddocks motives. In fact, its been reported that Paddock booked a hotel room in Chicago that overlooked the Lollapalooza Festival as well as a high-rise condo in Vegas that was near the Life is Beautiful music festival. |

I have been a gun control activist for 20 years. Every time I speak out on the need for stricter gun laws, I get a new profusion of threats. Theres always plenty of the garden-variety your dad would be ashamed of you sexist nonsense, along with the much more menacing threats to my family and personal safety. |

What Michigan's federal lawmakers think
Several members of Michigan's Congressional delegation expressed support for looking into the legality of bump stocks.
In a statement posted to Facebook, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, said "we cannot with a straight face justify the legality of bump stocks."
A spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, said the Congressman, a gun owner, was "previously unaware of bump stocks and believes that they should be looked at with greater scrutiny."
U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield, said she is a cosponsor on legislation that would ban devices that can turn semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons.
