"In a speech to a weary public at the World Congress Center in Atlanta Thursday, President George W. Bush did not call out the unorganized militias of the several states officially, but came as close as he could without saying the "M" word. He called for an unprecedented volunteer program for new modern civil defense service to work on a local level, to help keep America safe from further terrorist attacks." --J.J.Johnson, SierraTimes.com |

While Terry Nichols, already convicted on federal charges in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, returned to court Monday to face the state's case against him, the government was squirming to squelch evidence that Nichols and Timothy McVeigh did not act by themselves.
"The ruling was that he (Linder) would not permit him (Agent Vogel) to testify because the Department of Justice had taken the position that it would not authorize his testimony," Bergman said.
"What are they hiding that they won't let an agent testify? There is no excuse for it; none whatever," said Chicago attorney David P. Schippers. |

The Justice Department has decided to listen in on the conversations of lawyers with clients in federal custody, including people who have been detained but not charged with any crime, whenever that is deemed necessary "to prevent violence or terrorism."
Attorney General John Ashcroft approved the eavesdropping rule on an emergency basis last week, without the usual waiting period for public comment. It went into effect immediately, permitting the government to monitor conversations and intercept mail between people in custody and their attorneys for up to a year at a time. |

A new awareness of the sacrifices and service of war veterans has emerged in the wake of the nation's newly rekindled patriotism, said a member of the Texas City Rotary.
"Veterans have had to give their own parades and do their own events to honor themselves," he said. "We didn't think they should have to be doing this. So, we did it last year and we are doing it again this year. We think it will be a nice deal for them to come and be honored and see others honoring them." --Tommy Clark |

President Bush called for the "creation of a volunteer civil defense service" and told the American people that "the specter of a long war against terrorism within the United States will force the country to confront new responsibilities, both for government and for the people."
Then he called for Americans to "trust that their government is up to the task of protecting them" and is "expanding its legal powers to do so." [KABA NOTE: That is a contradiction in terms!]
Then he made a call for "vigilant normalcy."
KABA NOTE: "Vigilant Normalcy"??? Let's start with Bush's "trusted government" agencies. They are anything but normal. |
