"The midterm election may have been a referendum on the president, war, corruption, and scandal, but 'it does not translate into greater support for gun control at the grass roots level,' says a gun lobby group."
"'If anything, gun control was notable as a non-issue in this election,' said Gun Owners of America in a news release."
"A leading gun control group, however, says quite the contrary: 'In this election, the gun issue was in play, gun violence prevention groups won while the gun pushers lost, and there is now a shift in momentum on the issue of common-sense gun restrictions,' said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence." ... |

"On Thursday, November 2, the American Constitution Society hosted a debate between Professor Mark Tushnet and historian Saul Cornell over the challenges and possibilities for progressive gun control policy." ...
"Cornell began by describing the high cost - in both dollars and lives - of gun violence in America, noting that approximately 30,000 Americans die each year as a result of gun violence and that direct medical costs alone constitute several billion dollars of spending per year. ..." ...
"Tushnet, on the other hand, showed less optimism about the possibility of making progress on the gun control issue and expressed concern that 'making a big deal about it' would be a fruitless use of time and energy." ... -------

"On Thursday October 26th a group of mayors gathered in Chicago to plot their strategy for getting guns off the streets, a continuation of Mayor Bloombergs efforts from April. While the gathering made headlines in USA Today, the details in the reporting made it clear this cluster of obtuse politicians are clueless about crime."
"The problem with crime is not guns, it is criminals. Anyone with a modicum of common sense knows this; unfortunately, common sense seems to be a fairly rare thing in this crowd of mayors. The campaign will last for one year and is focusing on Rockford because statistics show more than 1-thousand kids here live in a home with a gun. -------

I have just read a letter to the editor in the Oct. 26 issue regarding NRA endorsed candidates.
I may be wrong, but it appears as though he has a misconception as to the provisions of the Second Amendment. It does not give individuals the right to bear arms. This is a misconception promulgated by the NRA.
I suggest the writer visit the Park Rapids Library and carefully read the Second Amendment.
Bill Souther,
Crosslake -------
Submitter's Note: Mr. Souther is correct, the Second Amendment does not give us the right to keep and bear arms, it protects that pre-existing right. In theory, that is. |
