Maryland's 15-year-old ballistic fingerprinting law was a tantalizing idea that didn't work. It would doubtless be useful if police could pick up a shell casing at a crime scene and discover with a few clicks of a computer what gun it came from and who the gun's last known owner was. |

Originally envisioned by the Founding Fathers as tyranny deterrent, the gun has since become many other things: the criminals trusty tool, the hobbyists fetish and, depressingly, the police forces preferred weapon in its dealings with African Americans. And though the NRA and responsible gun owners may point to hunting as a positive use of firearms, the reality is that the gun just cant seem to outgrow the reason for its invention: ending human life. |

Properly built, railguns could be a world changing weapon. Electromagnetic forces accelerating projectiles at high speeds means powerful guns could one day again line the decks of ships. And the Navy has taken note. It is investing in railguns for the future, and is already building ships that would someday carry the sophisticated weapon.

In the last 10 years, federal authorities recorded on average one mass shooting every two weeks in the United States. The FBI defines a mass shooting as having four or more victims.
Just four months ago, a gunman attacked a military recruiting center in East Tennessee and killed five service members. In October, a shooter at an Oregon community college killed 10 people.

On Election Day, I signed the Maine Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense petition to once again try to close the gun-show loophole that allows anyone with a fistful of dollars to purchase a gun without a background check. Many of the other people coming out of the polling place signed, too, but I despair of such a reasonable measure ever passing. |

A Los Angeles ordinance signed into law by Mayor Eric Garcetti in August and which bans the mere possession of firearm magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds does not sit well with county sheriffs across the state.

I understand fear. I am a small woman and have been followed and harassed more than once by a strange man when walking home late. Once, while walking a dog along a country road, I was approached by a neighbor who grabbed and groped me. I struggled loose and ran away, half-dragging the dog that had failed to protect me.

The US Navy is working on a few railgun projects that will eventually replace the largest guns on the fleets cruisers and destroyers. These rail guns will fire a projectile away from the ship at around Mach 7 on a ballistic trajectory to a target one hundred miles away. Its an even more impressive piece of artillery than a gun with a nuclear warhead, and someday, it will be real.
