MI: Michigan hunting in major decline why that matters

Hunting, and to a lesser extent fishing, are on the decline in Michigan with a particularly alarming drop in hunting that's only going to get steeper, as the baby boomers who have driven the sport for decades age and drop away.

This could pose a crisis in how Michigan funds its wildlife and habitat programs; have a huge, negative impact on the state's economy, and raises the specter of deer overpopulation, accompanying animal diseases and increases in car-deer accidents.

From a high of 785,000 deer hunters in 1998, the number of licenses sold for Michigan's firearm deer-hunting season last year was down to 621,000 a nearly 21 percent decline. By 2035, projections are that the late-'90s rate will be cut by more than half.

The Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, site of the nation's latest major deadly mass shooting, rests just north of a residential neighborhood in this normally placid California enclave.

The horror that erupted there late Wednesday night brought out Brandon Simone and his neighbor, Molly, who live in apartments down the street from the bar.

Molly, who asked that her last name not be used for her own safety, opened up her apartment and meager first-aid kit to survivors suffering broken bones, open gashes and mental anguish while they awaited medical treatment.

Recently, Zehr said the Cedar Rapids Police Department did security checks to ensure safety at nearby bars, including his.

"Checking each place and checking their cameras and making sure that they're on the entrance, on the exit, on the parking lot, and over the cash register, so if something happens, it is going to be caught," Zehr said.

Zehr said these checks are good for business and good for law enforcement to create a partnership if something were to happen. Zehr said cameras can only do so much, and with any threat, there is only so much ownership can do within the confines of state and federal law. He said they hope for the best, but prepare for the worst case scenario.

Another pledge is to loosen restrictions on gun ownership. Many Brazilians are expecting that will happen soon.

Rildo Anjos, an owner of a gun club and a Bolsonaro supporter, said he now has 150 students, up from 100.

It is a matter of prevention because a good citizen is not going to fight crime, that is the role of the police, but he should have the right to have guns for self-defense, said Anjos

For that to happen, Brazil would have to scrap a 2003 disarmament law that bans almost everyone except those serving on security forces from carrying weapons. Brazils Congress is poised to do just that once Bolsonaro takes office.

Two recent challenges to those words, one in 2008 in the Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that "THAT" right indeed does belong to individuals in their homes for self-defense. Another was very close to home for all Chicagoans, when in 2010 the Supreme Court ruled in McDonald vs the City of Chicago that the due process clause of the 14th Amendment limits the power of the City of Chicago to outlaw the possession of handguns by private citizens. Hey they tried.

Daniel Cerqueira, an economist at the Instituto for Applied Economic Research, in Braslia, is the country's foremost researcher on the impact on deaths by gun violence caused by the restrictions imposed by 15-year-old Brazilian gun law.

According to his research, the law spared more than 2,000 lives from 2004 to 2007. "We saw that gun-related homicides fell from 2003, and only rose again because of new allowances in the law," he said.

We have had 307 mass shootings this year in the U.S. That is 307 too many. We must enact common sense gun legislation in our country. I respect the Second Amendment, and we can ensure both the right to own guns and be safe in our schools and gathering places.

We could: 1) require background checks on all gun purchasers; 2) license firearm owners; 3) register firearms; 4) regulate firearms dealers and ammunition sellers; 5) require the reporting of lost or stolen firearms; 6) impose a waiting period before the sale of a firearm; and 7) limit firearm purchases to one per person every 90 days.

Ohio lawmakers are preparing to return to the Statehouse for what looks like a busy lame duck session. Legislators are expected to pass a slew of bills before the year ends.

Gov. John Kasich is among the many state leaders preparing for what could be a big fight over hot button bills including the "Stand Your Ground" bill, which makes it easier to use lethal force in self-defense.

Consider that in a typical presidential election, Washington correspondents vote 937 percent for the Democrat, while the rest of America votes somewhere around 5050, according to Timothy Groseclose of George Mason University. The reason that we will never hear our moral superiors in the press condemn Maxine Waters, Tim Kaine, Keith Ellison, or Eric Holder for their endorsements of political violence, then, is that they do not see it as political violence. In their view, its self-defense against those who threaten their ideology.

U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez, a George W. Bush appointee, blocked Proposition 63 in June 2017. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals later declined to lift his injunction. In his ruling, Benitez declared that the law is a poor fit as a means to eliminate the types of mass shooting events experienced in California. He insisted that high-capacity magazines are an incredibly rare danger to public safety.

Of the ten mass shooting events that occurred in California, Benitez wrote, only two involved the use of a magazine holding more than 10 rounds. He reasoned that the law was a poor fit as means to increase public safety. And he concluded that, as a result, Proposition 63 likely cannot survive constitutional scrutiny.

Newly ascendant Democrats are promising congressional action on gun control amid a rash of mass shootings, including a late-night assault at a California bar that killed 12 people.

Measures including expanded background checks and a ban on assault-style weapons are likely to reach the House floor when Democrats retake control after eight years of Republican rule.

"The American people deserve real action to end the daily epidemic of gun violence that is stealing the lives of our children on campuses, in places of worship and on our streets," said Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democratic leader who is running for a second stint as House speaker.

On 24 October 2018, just before 3 p.m., at the Kroger store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, a man opened fire on people he did not know.

The suspect, Gregory Alan Bush was a prohibited possessor. He had a mental illness, paranoid schizophrenia. He had been convicted of domestic violence against his parents and his wife. That is the last time I will mention his name. Mass murderers should not reap a reward of celebrity. This is a case where an armed citizen stopped the ongoing mass murder. There was another armed citizen at the scene, but he did not fire. Both legally armed citizens acted appropriately and with considerable thought and restraint.

Just two nights ago in Thousand Oaks just north of Los Angeles, a group of young people were having a fun-filled evening of line dancing at the Borderline Bar. Security was posted at the door, and the surrounding community has long been considered one of the safest in America.

A man entered armed with a single Glock .45 handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Moments later 12 people were dead or dying, and 18 were injured. One man, armed with one gun.

Theres at least one bill Kasich says he knows he wont sign.

Stand Your Ground bill, Id veto any bill like that, Kasich says.

Republican lawmakers have hinted at moving the Stand Your Ground bill, which makes it easier to use lethal force in self-defense.

The gun bill Kasich does want them to approve is the Red Flag Law, which allows people to ask a court to confiscate someones firearms if they seem to pose a threat.

It is delusional to think the Thousand Oaks, California massacre will be the last. Its only a matter of time before the next shooter goes berserk and kills more innocent people, maybe someone you love or know, sacrificed to the Supreme Courts flawed interpretation of the Second Amendment and the original intent of our 18th Century founding fathers. They could not conceive of todays modern, efficient weaponry or crowded urban settings, much less the lunacy the human mind is capable of. Private gun ownership and 21st Century life are simply too dangerous a combination to mix. Safety cannot be assured by superficial gun laws.

Californias latest gun violence is pressuring Washington lawmakers once again to confront Americas mass-shooting crisis.

For Newtown activists, the call for gun-safety laws is an all-too-frequent appeal for national action that has failed to bring significant changes since the 2012 shooting of 26 first-graders and educators at Sandy Hook School.

But something changed last week that has both sides of the gun-policy debate here expecting more movement on federal gun safety legislation in 2019.

California voters in 2016 passed a law to ban possession of magazines that carry more than 10 rounds. That effort was spearheaded by Newsom. But a lawsuit by gun rights groups has blocked it from going into effect.

High capacity magazine clips have no place in the streets of this country, let alone the streets of this city and state, Newsom told reporters at a press conference in San Francisco.

Ventura County law enforcement has said the suspected gunman used an extended magazine for ammunition. Its not clear how many rounds it held.

Craig DeLuz, a spokesman for the Cal Guns Foundation, said efforts to ban magazines over 10 rounds erode Second Amendment rights.

Rosanne Cash, who has been frequently outspoken about gun control issues in recent years, isnt being shy about speaking up again in the wake of the mass shootings in Thousand Oaks, California, near where she grew up as the daughter of Johnny Cash.

Step back and take the wide view and see that we have a systemic problem in this country, she said in an interview with the Atlantic that took place the day after the tragedy. These were college kids, right? We use young people as collateral damage for the Second Amendment, and its wrong.
