"Commissioners approved a revised ordinance that would bar everybody but on- and off-duty police officers from carrying a concealed weapon at City Hall, the police department, the Department of Public Works facility and Rogers Lodge."

"Along with guns, the proposed law bans daggers, razors and stilettos with blades of three inches or longer."

"The commission first considered the issue on Oct. 21 but asked for changes in the draft law. The revised draft was modeled after a Ferndale ordinance that survived a circuit court challenge and is now before the state Court of Appeals, officials said."

... "Stringfellow's weapon is just one of 11 guns - traced to an illegal Peninsula gun ring - which have ended up on Baltimore's streets. Federal authorities say the guns were purchased illegally from Peninsula dealers between March 28, 2001, and April 2002. Another 15 or 16 illegal guns from the Peninsula are unaccounted for, Detective Andrew Corsaro of the Baltimore police intelligence unit, said."

"Paul J. McNulty, the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said the problem with illegal gun purchases is statewide. However, the problem seems more acute on the Peninsula."

"In past years, Virginia handguns have surfaced in homicides, robberies and drug raids in Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia. These places have stricter gun laws - longer waiting periods when buying a gun or an outright ban on the sale of handguns." ...

"Although Corsaro could not say how Stringfellow acquired his pistol, he said crime guns often change hands several times before they surface. The trail of the pistol Stringfellow was carrying began March 28, 2001 - 174 days prior to the Baltimore homicide, Corsaro said. That day, Neil Dennis bought the gun at Cash Quick of Denbigh Pawn Shop in Newport News."

"Dennis and two of his friends didn't have criminal records, but a drug habit left them vulnerable and in need of cash, police said. They got paid for buying the guns." ...

OH: FOP of Ohio position on CCW

From the Ohio FOP website, their position on CCW. I don't think their position is unreasonable. I'm sure I've just made some enemies but read it and feel free to e-mail me with comments. Note: scroll down to the bottom of the page.

RELEVANT EXCERPTS:

"The Fraternal Order of Police supports that right of citizens being able to protect themselves. We know that we cant be everywhere or foresee every crime that takes place in this state. A properly trained individual knowing the responsibilities of owning a gun may very well be able to fend off and prevent a crime from occurring. This we do not dispute nor oppose the concept."

"What the Fraternal Order of Police opposes is language contained in HB 274 allowing criminals with warrants out for their arrest to legally carry a concealed weapon. ... We oppose the language that would allow an individual who has been convicted of a violent misdemeanor crime, including assault on a police officer, to obtain a permit and carry a concealed firearm. We oppose the language that would allow an individual who has just finished a 6 month sentence in jail to literally walk out of his or her cell, go straight to the local sheriff and get a permit to carry a concealed weapon."

"Another major concern of the FOP is the lack of training. ... We dont believe that four hours of training is adequate enough to safely handle a handgun when out in public."

"In conclusion I would like to state that we do not oppose the concept of conceal and carry. We do believe that any legislation passed should be both reasonable and responsible. This issue is not just about officer safety but the Public Safety."

"But it is the other bullets -- 56 errant shots -- that best portray what became an escalating pattern of reckless shooting by Miami police, a Herald investigation has found."

"Throughout a decade of sometimes hair-raising shootings, Miami police supervisors allowed officers wide discretion to decide when to fire their guns."

"Unlike some other departments', Miami's deadly-force policy was relatively liberal. It said an officer could shoot only 'as a last resort to prevent death or substantial harm to himself or another.' But, at the same time, officers had a green light to shoot escaping persons -- especially if they had a 'reasonable belief' that the suspect was armed, or was a violent criminal such as a murderer, rapist, armed robber or even an unarmed mugger."
