A U.S. appeals court decision defying precedent on gun rights has reached the steps of the Supreme Court, carrying with it the potential for a seismic shift in laws across the nation.
Since 1939, the nation's judges had generally regarded the Second Amendment right "to keep and bear arms" as belonging to state militias, such as National Guard units, not to individual gun owners. But on March 9, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit interpreted the Second Amendment differently. The panel concluded that it protects an individual's right to firearms and struck down a Washington, D.C., ban on handguns. |

A woman stabbed the father of her child to death as they fought in Brooklyn Saturday evening, cops said.
Thomas Adonis, 25, and the suspect were fighting in her Prospect Lefferts Gardens apartment about 6 p.m. when she stabbed him once in the chest with a kitchen knife, police said.
...
A detective from the 70th Precinct said the 27-year-old woman told investigators that she stabbed Adonis once in self-defense because he was choking her. |

While the government said Friday it would raise the minimum age for buying guns from 15 to 18, officials insisted there was no need for sweeping changes to gun laws shaped by deep-rooted traditions of hunting in the sub-Arctic wilderness.
"If you look at the rate of homicides with firearms, the figure is very low," Interior Ministry spokesman Ilkka Salmi said. "People using guns are hunters. They live in rural areas. It's part of the life over there."
According to a government study conducted in 2002, only 14 percent of homicides in Finland are gun-related. |

There’s a lot of background noise right now in the continuing fight between the National Rifle Association and Georgia business leaders over the guns-in-the-parking-lot bill -- the measure that kicked up such a bitter fuss in the state Senate last session and was left to languish as the session ended.
Some folks are still looking to see if there is any middle ground by which senators could give the NRA a little something for its trouble and, thereby, be seen as coming down four-square for the Second Amendment, while not, at the same time, being seen as thumbing their noses at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. |

Patrick told him that Obama is "not about a single issue." Valade nodded. But he said, "You have to understand that the Second Amendment is a single issue for a lot of people."
New Hampshire voters can be a stubborn lot, as Patrick saw firsthand yesterday in his first trip to New Hampshire on Obama's behalf since endorsing the Illinois senator last month.
After joining more than 100 Obama supporters on a bus trip from Boston to Nashua, he knocked on the doors of five houses, most chosen by the Obama campaign, and talked - sometimes at length - with the residents inside. |

Supreme Court justices have track records that make predicting their rulings on many topics more than a mere guess. Then there is the issue of the Second Amendment and guns, about which the court has said virtually nothing in nearly 70 years.
That could change in the next few months.
The justices are facing a decision about whether to hear an appeal from city officials in Washington, D.C., wanting to keep the capital's 31-year ban on handguns. A lower court struck down the ban as a violation of the Second Amendment rights of gun ownership.
The prospect that the high court might define gun rights under the Constitution is making people on both sides of the issue nervous. |

As Congress debates new rules for government eavesdropping, a top intelligence official says it is time that people in the United States changed their definition of privacy.
Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguard people's private communications and financial information.
"Those two generations younger than we are have a very different idea of what is essential privacy, what they would wish to protect about their lives and affairs. And so, it's not for us to inflict one size fits all," said Kerr, 68. "Protecting anonymity isn't a fight that can be won." |

Three guns linked to Pancho Villa were auctioned for nearly $29,000, apparently less than what organizers expected the firearms tied to the Mexican revolutionary to fetch. "That's the fun of auctions _ sometimes you get bargains," said Amy McMurrough, a spokeswoman for the auction, which was held Saturday near San Antonio. The prize of the auction _ Villa's Remington single action revolver with his real name, "Doreteo Arango," engraved on the barrel _ sold for $18,000. |

You can use rifles for deer hunting now down in Steuben County. I dont know that anyone in our camp will, at least this season. This is probably because most of us were opposed to the use of rifles when the Department of Environmental Conservation allowed them in numerous Southern Zone counties in 2005. Now, Steuben, Yates and Chemung counties have been added to Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego, Allegany, Chenango, Montgomery, Oswego, Schoharie and Tioga counties. The use of rifles in formerly shotgun-only areas hasnt resulted in what many of us foresaw as increased safety concerns the last couple of big game seasons have been among the safest on record but rifles still make many of us nervous. |

"Linda Singer, the district's attorney general, tells the justices that the appeals court made three errors...First,the Second Amendment's text and history, properly understood, show that the amendment grants a right that 'may be exercised only in connection with service in a state-regulated militia.'"
Sorry Ms. Singer...the Amendment does not grant any rights...individual or collective. It restrains the powers of government concerning the right. |

Two former Mount Tahoma High School students have been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison each for their roles in an attack that left a former college professor dead. Pierce County Superior Court Judge Thomas Larkin sentenced Jarrell M. Marshall on Friday to 15 years, 9 months in prison and Daniel D. Harris to 10 years, 9 months. Marshall is now 17 and Harris 19. They were arrested in the April 2006 death of Dien Kien Huynh, who prosecutors say was attacked and beaten as part of a robbery. Marshall pleaded guilty in August to one count of second-degree murder in Huynh's death and two counts of robbery for an earlier attack on a couple out for a walk. Harris pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of robber

As the insurgency in Iraq escalated in the spring of 2004, U.S. officials entrusted an Iraqi businessman with issuing weapons to Iraqi police cadets training to help quell the violence. By all accounts, the businessman, Kassim al-Saffar, did well at distributing the Pentagon-supplied weapons from the Baghdad Police armory he managed for a military contractor. But, he also turned the armory into his own private arms bazaar with the seeming approval of some U.S. officials and executives, selling AK-47s, Glock pistols and heavy machine guns to anyone
This was the craziest thing in the world, said John Tisdale, a retired Air Force master sergeant who managed an adjacent warehouse. They were taking weapons away by the truckload.

It took years of mounting frustration, but Ken Williamson finally had enough.
And state wildlife officials have reason for concern, because he's nowhere close to being the only landowner feeling that way.
Williamson owns..It has long been a prime area for hunters, since Mud Lake sits just over the hill beyond his property. About a mile of the gravel road leading to the lake, including the entrance off SR 410, runs right across Williamson's property.
For years, he put up with the thousands of dollars of vandalism, the relentless garbage-dumping, the all-hours gunfire and poaching, not to mention the dangers created by irresponsible hunters who didn't seem to care that the Williamson family's homes might be in the line of fire. |
