The murder trial of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate for the 2015 death of Kate Steinle has provided an occasion for right-wingers from coast to coast to demand vengeance on anyone who might look like an undocumented immigrant. Garcia Zarate is an undocumented homeless man who apparently had been deported five times and previously arrested. The conservative Washington Times called him something of an illegal immigration artist, which is the new my boyfriend says hes a DJ. He was also called a career criminal because of a four-year prison sentence although it was only for illegal re-entry and had an outstanding marijuana charge.

MI: Kaffer: The Legislature Wants More Guns. Michiganders Don't.

Here's what most Michiganders want: No guns in schools, daycare centers or churches. That's the clear result of public polling conducted in the state and in the region.

What the Legislature delivers: Bill after bill aimed at expanding access to firearms, increasing the number of places guns can be carried, either in the open or concealed, enhancing the ease with which firearms can be transported, and gutting local governments' ability to make decisions about when and where guns may be carried.

There's a disconnect, here, and it's not going away anytime soon.

Lawmakers are mulling lots of gun bills.
Did the bills to allow concealed carry in schools take you by surprise this week? They're actually some of quite a few bills on guns pending in the Michigan Legislature.
House Republicans outlined defending second amendment rights as one of their priorities for the 2017-2018 session. Senate Republicans, too have introduced a number of related bills, and more could crop up from either side in the future.
But for now, here's what's pending:

Permitless concealed carry

Letting 18 to 20-year-olds concealed carry

Letting foster parents own guns

Allowing concealed carry in schools & other places

Eliminating pistol registration

Banning carrying in police stations...

MI: Riley: Michigan Senate Loses It's Mind, Votes to Allow Guns in Schools and churches

The Michigan Senate has lost its collective mind.

The 38-member body approved legislation Wednesday that would allow folks to carry concealed handguns into schools, churches, day care centers, bars and stadiums - all places that now ban them.

Rather than be deterred by recent mass shootings that have left dozens dead and hundreds injured, these senators want to take the law into their own hands - or place it in the hands of whoever happens to be there if - and when - Michigan suffers fates similar to those that occurred in Texas and Nevada.

They want to make sure people can participate in gun battles as if at the OK Corral, notwithstanding the children or parishioners that might be in the way.

What Are Common Sense Gun Laws And Would They Pass 2A Muster?

The gun prohibition lobby has campaigned for years with the argument that what this country needs is common sense gun safety legislation. They want common sense gun reform.

In Washington State, special election winner Manka Dhingra told KING 5 News, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, that her legislative priorities include sensible gun legislation.

What, exactly, are all of these people talking about? More importantly, would these restrictions pass strict scrutiny under the Second Amendment?

Is there any other civilized country on earth where a teenager can walk into a gun store and legally buy military-style assault weapons and large magazines designed to maximize the death toll? We all know the answer to that. Just like we all know that the latest tragedy in Sutherland, Texas will be followed by more gruesome mass shootings of Americans while they pray, watch a movie, listen to a concert, sit quietly as a teacher reads, attend a peaceful rally or just go to work, the post office, a lecture, a restaurant, a family reunion.

People met at Disciple Central Community Church in DeSoto Saturday morning, to talk about gun violence and what they think should be done about it on a local, state and national level. The forum was planned weeks before the deadly massacre at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Many people in the audience, even some of the panelists, are gun owners who believe in the right to bear arms, but feel something needs to be done to address gun violence.

State Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, said having gun safety zones where "responsible, law-abiding gun owners" with concealed pistol licenses are prohibited from carrying concealed pistols "creates tragedy."

On Wednesday, the state Senate passed a package of three bills allowing people with an enhanced concealed pistol license to carry their guns in places such as churches, schools, stadiums, bars and other places currently designated as safe zones.

"Since 1950, 98% of the mass shootings have taken place in gun-free zones," Pavlov said.

Current state law prohibits concealed carry in gun safe zones; courts have ruled, however, that people can open carry guns in such places under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

On the same day of the Texas church massacre, I stopped by a local sporting goods shop intent on purchasing a new shotgun.

Ive had my eye on the nicely built 12-gauge over/under for some time, and when I spotted an ad among my Sunday circulars offering it for an irresistible price, I headed out to the store.

The gun was in stock, and after shouldering it, my desire to purchase the weapon was confirmed... Instead, he came back with the store manager, who eyed me with a worried look and asked why I had pitched such a fit earlier. I tried to explain my computer frustration, but she wasnt moved.

We dont feel comfortable selling you a gun, she informed me. You were in such an agitated state, we just dont want to take a chance.

A shooting victim Saturday night in Flint managed to fire a shot back at his alleged assailant, according to police.

The victim told police he was walking around 9 p.m. Nov. 11 in the 1500 block of Berrywood Lane, between Hargott Avenue and Crestbrook Lane, when he was approached by two males wearing dark clothing.

Words were exchanged between the trio and one of the suspects pulled a handgun out and fired at the victim before fleeing in an unknown direction.

Flint police Detective Tyrone Booth confirmed Sunday afternoon that the victim "did discharge the firearm he was legally carrying" during the incident.

"We only have one victim at this time," he said.

In a series of Tweets immediately after the shootings at a Sutherland Springs Baptist church, Archbishop Gustavo Garca-Siller, who shepherds half a million Catholics, was unusually demonstrative. No war, no violence, no guns, was followed by Governor, NO war, NO violence, NO guns. Enough is enough!!! @AbishopGustavo filed about a dozen Tweets by days end. Like those of other faith leaders, his words came from grief for the 26 people killed and 20 others injured by an assailant with a history of domestic violence armed with an assault-style rifle.

Senate Democrats pushed nine different gun controls during the past six weeks, and ABC News has now emerged with a tenth gun law which they suggest may be the ringer. That law would legalize firearm confiscation orders like those in Washington state. Such orders allow a judge to issue an ex parte order for the confiscation of an Americans firearms. This means the order can be issued without the firearm owner even being present for the process. His or her first knowledge of the order would come when police knocked on their door to sweep the house for firearms.

A proposed Wisconsin bill would require gun retailers to lock up their guns when their businesses are unattended. Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, proposed the bill in October. She told The Janesville Gazette that she authored the bill following an April burglary at a Janesville gun shop. A man stole more than a dozen guns and sent a manifesto to President Donald Trump. The event sparked a 10-day national manhunt.

South Carolina hailed reforms passed two years ago to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers in a state where the lion's share of intimate-partner killings involve a firearm. But with little tracking of how judges apply the ban and no mechanism for removing guns from offenders' homes, it's nearly impossible to tell whether the law is working.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich says gun owners and backers of gun-control measures need to find common ground on ways to reduce violence. The Republican governor in an editorial published by Cleveland.com and during an interview Sunday on ABCs This Week said its time to bring together reasonable people on both sides of the debate. Kasich points to a similar approach in Ohio where those in law enforcement and community leaders held forums aimed at building trust between police and residents.

Buyers and sellers had only one complaint about the first gun show held in the city in decades. The room was too crowded. "It's OK, because next time we are going to have it on the ice rink, and there will be more tables and more room," said Martin Tretola, a Long Island-based promoter who said he had 120 tables for the show in Heritage Hall for his first Glens Falls Gun Show, but had to turn dozens of dealers away. "We had plenty of dealers and plenty of people, and in March, we'll be able to have 200 tables and probably take care of everybody."

As the laws stand right now, buying a suppressor to put on your gun is a much more difficult task than buying the gun itself, and in some states such as California, its flat-out illegal for citizens to own a suppressor. Restrictions on the private ownership of suppressors were part of the 1934 National Firearms Act, which required people to get fingerprinted, pass a background check and wait for a $200 tax stamp before owning a device that will make their gun safer for their hearing and the hearing of others.

Stephen Willefords heroic actions last Sunday saved many lives at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The killer, Devin Kelley, was shooting the wounded when Willeford showed up with a rifle. Willefords quick actions forced Kelley to stop his attack, presumably saving the lives of the twenty wounded and possibly many more. The press derided President Trump for saying that Willeford saved many lives with his gun, and that stricter gun control regulations would have only made things worse.

Last Sunday, a man entered a church in a tiny town in Southern Texas and opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle, killing or wounding almost everyone inside. As you might imagine, the national conversation almost immediately went to the issue of guns, which is one of this country's most divisive issues. Many pointed to the mass shooting as the latest evidence that there needs to be more gun control, but others say the laws need to be looser so that, quote, unquote, "good citizens" can protect against the bad ones. NPR's Leila Fadel visited a gun store and sent this report.

As a general rule, we like to see folks work on the basics before the all-but-inevitable obsession with gear sets in. You know: Sight picture, trigger press, hitting what you aim atthat kind of stuff. Were mighty good at this ourselves, we may say. Or at least we are until somebody shows us a clever flashlight, or worse yet, a flashlight/laser combo. When this happens, mental age descends to about 13, and the urge to say cool about every third word simply takes over. Its a burden. (Notice we make no mention of range-finding opticsthese reduce us to quivering blobs.)
