Ten years is a very long time, during which a political landscape can change, and so can the judicial arena.

Ten years ago, if someone had suggested that the politically-fashionable handgun bans in Washington, D.C. and Chicago could be struck down on Second Amendment grounds, he might have been laughed out of town. Today, a herd of municipal attorneys for cities and towns large and small are paying a lot closer attention to firearms regulations.

The case, known as Heller II, is seeking to overturn restrictions on firearms possession the District of Columbia imposed after Heller won his previous case. Like his previous challenge, Heller lost in the district court. He then defeated the city in the appeals court, ending Washington's almost total ban on guns. A victory in Heller II has the potential to provide gun advocates in other states with an influential ruling, Heller's lawyer, Stephen Halbrook, said in an interview.

When Florida's so-called "stand-your-ground law" took effect in 2005, a well-known anti-gun organization started issuing scary warnings to tourists.

The Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence advised Florida's visitors to avoid arguments with the locals, lest they be gunned down by a populace now free to pull the trigger whenever anyone made them feel nervous.

There's an old saying that American freedom stands upon three boxes: the soap box, the ballot box, and the ammunition box.

That's a metaphorical way of describing three essential freedoms that are the guardians of liberty: the right to free speech, the right to free and fair elections, and the right to keep and bear arms.

To many on the right, those freedoms are under attack, and have been for years, by the left.

A two-year-old law that was intended to protect Ohio homeowners who shoot intruders in self-defense is instead increasingly being manipulated to help murder suspects avoid taking responsibility for their crimes, some prosecutors say.

The so called "castle doctrine" of 2008 says people are presumed to be acting in self defense when they injure or kill someone who has illegally entered their occupied home or vehicle.

Growing up in suburban Broken Arrow, I never really had the chance to grow an interest in weapons. To my Dad, who had three guns above the bed most of my teenage years, I never showed enough interest to warrant all the fees and licenses. Also, I was a bit of a pseudo hippie-stoner more interested in skateboarding, science or other creative and intellectual pursuits; than the rough and tumble manly-man things of the world. Your basic teenage lump, I never shot a gun until well into my twenties.

The federal government has created new regulations and demanded that the states implement those regulations. At the same time, the federal government has refused to give the states the monetary support necessary to implement the new demands. The federal government has also overextended its reach by placing unnecessary restrictions on individual rights, such as the constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms.

2010 could have been a bad year in Madison for the Second Amendment.

WI-FORCE and our lobbyist, Bob Welch of the Welch Group, monitored over 100 bills and potential bills in Madison pertaining to firearms and hunting.

Yes, I said over 100. When you needed a voice, WI-FORCE was there. We were able to get a few good bills passed and, more importantly, we stopped all of the very bad bills. WI-FORCE was your voice.

A car dealership in Florida is offering a free AK-47 via $400 voucher to a local gun shop with the purchase of a pick-up truck.

In my limited experience with car purchases, the upgrades offered from most dealerships are things like scientific-sounding paint jobs that protect from harmful UV rays, all sorts of CD players and MP3 docks, and if its a really seedy dealership, something like a coupon to Olive Garden or Red Robin.

Calling this city's gun laws the most "radically restrictive" in the country, a lawyer for a group of District of Columbia residents urged a federal appeals court in Washington today to strike down laws that requires gun owners to register all firearms and pass a training course.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government that is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. JAMES MADISON
