Melanie Bowman has found her calling as a precision shooter while competing in marksmanship events.
The Bloomfield High School junior, who started competing her freshman year, made her debut as a precision shooter last month at the 2017 Four Corners Invitational at Piedra Vista High School, recording a combined 95 percent accuracy both in prone and kneeling positions and 89.50 percent shooting from a standing position.
Bowman placed 11th out of 33 that weekend, and now she looks to build on that performance competing at the state level Friday at Albuquerque's West Mesa High School.
"I was working on my natural point of aim," Bowman said.
Bowman's peers quickly noticed her ability to hit the target with great accuracy ... |

A Mattawan police officer was charged with a misdemeanor after allegedly shooting someone during an attempted traffic stop, according to court records.
Mattawan Police Officer Chelsey Omilian was arraigned Friday, Nov. 17, on a single count of weapon firearm - reckless use related to a Nov. 3 incident in which she allegedly attempted to pull over a vehicle and fired shots, hitting someone in the car.
The misdemeanor charge is punishable by 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.
The officer turned herself into the court on Friday afternoon and was released on a personal recognizance bond, Michigan State Police said. She was placed on administrative leave after the incident, Police Chief Scott Herbert said Friday morning. |

The driver asked Ruscher's girlfriend if she still wanted to be driven home, but then Ruscher returned. He began threatening the driver and walking closer to him in an aggressive manner. The driver pulled out his gun and tried to push Ruscher away from him, but was punched in the shoulder. He then pointed the gun at Ruscher and warned him to back off, but Ruscher refused and said, I will kill you, according to the deputies.
The victim shot one round into Ruschers leg, deputies said. Witnesses said Ruscher was the aggressor and detectives said the victim was indeed in fear of his life.
The driver had a permit for the weapon, deputies said, and will not face any charges... |

The idea that people can overthrow a tyrannical government may be admirable in theory, perhaps, but the US does not have a good record of accepting the theory when applied against Washington. The US was not happy when the Confederate States tried to put this idea into practice in 1861; nor when the Black Panthers advocated it in the 1960s; nor even when angry farmers in Pennsylvania tried it in the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790s.
The core problem, in practice, is who speaks for the people?
Besides the collective right to keep and bear arms, the Second Amendment was probably also designed to defend the individuals right to bear arms. |

The letter's criticism of Ed Jones column Oct. 15 is correct. There is no ample precedent for limiting gun rights. The U.S. Supreme Court provided ample guidelines in its 1939 Miller and 2008 Heller decisions. Briefly, the right to self-defense arises from the individuals right to keep arms, and the arms protected by the Second Amendment are those that are useful in military service and in common use at the time by those citizens who own guns.
The Miller decision held that a hoodlum had no right to a sawed-off shotgun, not because he was not a member of a militia, but because the Army did not use that weapon and they were not in common use by armed citizens. The Heller decision agreed. |

The judiciary could well be the President's most lasting legacy, enduring long after his presidency is over.
So far, Gorsuch has delivered, not only siding with judicial conservatives on issues including the Second Amendment and the travel ban, but jumping into oral arguments and writing or joining opinions with a pace that is unusual for a new justice. He's also drawn criticism from liberals who contend that his seat was stolen from Garland, and others who question the tone and the style of some of his questions at oral arguments. |

In late June, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of federal appeals court and district court rulings. It thus upheld the San Diego County policy that requires good cause for the sheriff to issue a permit to carry a concealed weapon in public.
The so-called Peruta Case for San Diegan Edward Peruta, denied a permit for failure to show he was in harms way has become a Republican rallying cry.
The same day Gore spoke to the GOP women, San Diego County Gun Owners board member Joe Drammissi posted an essay on San Diego Rostra critical of Gore. |

Unfortunately, this dedication to expanding access to fundamental liberties, however arduous or taxing it may be, is very selective in scope. Governor McAuliffes concern for safeguarding the civil liberties of second class citizens who must jump through onerous hoops doesnt extend to empowering lawful gun owners in Virginia seeking to exercise their Second Amendment freedoms.
Among other things, the governor vetoed legislation this year that would have allowed a person protected by an unexpired order of protection to legally carry a concealed handgun for a short time, including the processing period for a concealed carry license. |

The hated progressives are NOT proposing that we give up our guns. What they are proposing is that some restrictions related to current weapon technology get implemented. As a John Doe citizen, it is illegal for me to buy or have a fully automatic weapon. Nevertheless, I can buy parts that will convert my semi auto to full, and many of my fellow John Does do just that. You know, the "good people with a gun" ignoring the law. Because? I don't know the hated big government is coming for them? (Like their fully auto AR15 is going to protect them from an assault by big gov which has stuff like Predator drones and long-range artillery and sonic weaponry and chain guns that shoot 625+ bullets per minute.) |

A disturbed man recently shot up a Texas church leaving 26 people dead: adults and children and a pregnant woman. Add the Texas church to another church in Charleston, South Carolina; a concert in Las Vegas; a nightclub in Orlando; a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and an elementary school in
Newtown, Connecticut. But that is just the tip of the iceberg: Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control shows that on average 93 Americans are killed with guns every day. |

The National Rifle Association applauded Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for signing Assembly Bill 455, which allows Wisconsinites of all ages to take part in Wisconsins mentored hunting program.
Hunting is a time-honored tradition for many Wisconsin families. With passage of this bill, that tradition will continue to flourish and grow, said Amy Hunter, Wisconsin spokesperson, NRA-ILA. Now, families can decide for themselves when to begin teaching the joys and responsibilities of hunting to the next generation. |

I can only believe that for now at least, we are a country who keeps loving our guns more than we love our children.
Personally, I've begun to feel that my Second Amendment rights are being violated. I was promised the right to a well-regulated militia, and instead I see a nation that falls victim, week after week, body after body, to a series of unstable people with elaborately hoarded arsenals. I am absolutely sure our founders would be appalled. I am absolutely sure that our founders would not wish that we run out and buy even more guns because of it. |

Reid drew his Ruger and boasted that he carried the gun everywhere, police said. He removed the magazine, cleared the chamber and passed it around before reloading, chambering another round and reholstering.
Someone else walked up late and asked for a look. This time, Reid forgot to check the chamber and pulled the trigger to prove it wasn't loaded, the chief said.
The bullet sliced open his palm, struck his wife on the left side, came out the right side of her abdomen and passed through her right forearm before ricocheting off the wall and landing under her wheelchair, according to a police report. |

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for a white former South Carolina police officer who pleaded guilty to a federal charge in the shooting death of an unarmed black man two years ago.
Court records filed Friday show that a hearing for former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager will begin Dec. 4.
Slager pleaded guilty in May to violating Walter Scott's civil rights. He was tried on murder charges last year, but the jury deadlocked. As part of his plea deal, the state dropped the criminal charges. |

"We think of fans as family," she says. "I think the next step that you think of is how concerned everyone is for security. [T]hen the next part is gun control and talking about what that means. I think people are realizing the divisiveness over, like, when people are trying to make it like someone's trying to take away your guns. Nobody's trying to take away guns. Eighty percent of gun owners believe that there should be background checks." |

Close on her heels this week was the recently-rebranded Giffords gun control consortium, which released a report that used the current debate over firearm legislation to well, advocate for gun bans, too. But the Giffords report went well beyond the usual gun control talking points in extending its attack all the way to muzzle loading firearms. From the modern to the archaic, no gun is safe from the newly-emboldened prohibition lobby.
Considering these proposals, its hard to imagine how any firearm can thread the needle through all the justifications gun control advocates use to argue for additional bans. |

A gun enthusiast from southern California says he is taking a step to help destroy gun violence.
One of Chad Vachters prized possessions was a thousand-dollar AR-15 assault rifle. After seeing the growing number of mass shootings in the country, Vachter said he was fed up and decided to take a hammer to his gun, destroying it.
I cant do it, he said. I cant have something in my house that so easily could become a part of another situation like that, and Im not going to be desensitized to it. I refuse to. |
