Record Number of Gun Owners

There are many ways to measure gun ownership in the United States. Each method involves assumptions. Each gives a different answer.

There were about two million guns sold last month. Surely that means there are more gun owners. The anti-rights groups who want to restrict gun ownership say the opposite. They say those two million guns all went to a shrinking number of gun owners.

We can test that claim by the anti-rights bigots. It is ironic, but the same laws used to regulate gun ownership show us that there are more gun owners than ever. The good news is we see more gun owners in every segment of society.

America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms, Gadahn says in the video. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check and most likely without having to show an identification card.

Ed.: Would that it were.

As this column reported a few weeks ago, the Democrats are betting big on gun control for this election cycle.

Thats good news for GunVoters, that minority of us who, while perhaps not being one-issue voters, dont trust a politician who doesnt trust us with a gun. Republicans, however, seem oblivious to the opportunity.

Nice try. According to the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety formerly Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America there have been 160 school shootings since Newtown, adding up to approximately one per week.

...

Guns arent really my thing. But I do follow the news pretty closely and the 160 school shootings claim which I read in an AP story about debate over removing metal detectors from New York City public schools didnt sit right with me.

If there had been a school shooting in America every week since Newtown, Im pretty sure Id have heard about it. But, hey, maybe my bull detector is broken.

Essentially, the bill would have shifted the burden of proof to prosecutors, making them prove that a defendant was not acting in self defense. The effort came in response to a May ruling by the Florida Supreme Court that said people who used the defense had to prove they were acting in self-defense.

In voting against the bill, Rep. Carlos Trujillo, a former prosecutor who chairs the subcommittee, said the proposal would have made it more difficult to prosecute someone who killed someone in front of no witnesses.

"It's your defense," Trujillo said. "If you're alleging something, you have to prove it."

A push to alter Florida's contentious 'stand your ground' law may be finished for the coming year despite the high-profile support of several Republican legislators and gun rights groups including the National Rifle Association.

A Florida House panel on Tuesday narrowly voted down a proposal to change the existing law and require prosecutors to prove a person on trial using the 'stand your ground' defense was not in fact acting in self-defense.

Gun rights advocates on Wednesday overcame opposition to two legislative proposals loosening firearms regulations. An expansion of the Stand-Your-Ground defense easily passed a Senate committee, but Rep. Matt Gaetz's open-carry bill was nearly ambushed by the Pinellas County sheriff during a House Justice Committee meeting.

Gaetz said his proposal is vindication of the Second Amendment. It would allow Floridas 1.4 million concealed-weapons permit holders to openly carry handguns wherever they have a right to be.

By lunchtime Wednesday, in the middle of what has been a hectic week at the Chester County Sheriff's Office, 20 people already had shown up to seek gun permits.

That followed 39 applicants for permits or renewals on Tuesday, and 46 on Monday - at least double the daily average from last month.

According to Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh, the bump has everything to do with last week's terror attacks across Paris. "People are frightened and more aware of self-defense," she said.

A retired Maine lobsterman believes a rule against possessing a gun in the affordable housing complex where he lives has forced him to choose between losing his home or forfeiting his constitutional right to bear arms, his lawyer said Wednesday.

In a lawsuit filed this week in Maine Superior Court, Harvey Lembo, a 67-year-old former volunteer policeman who lives in Rockland, along the New England state's eastern coast, contends that Stanford Management, of Portland, Maine, presented him an ultimatum: Give up his firearm or face eviction.

"Mr. Lembo is a man with a substantial disability and of limited means," said Lembo's Boston-based attorney, Patrick Strawbridge. "He shouldn't have to make this kind of choice."

The NRA and their gun-loving Republican cohorts are refusing once more to stop terrorists intent on getting armed in the U.S.A.

A legal loophole allows suspected terrorists on the governments no-fly list to legally buy guns, but a bill to fix that will likely wither on the vine. The federal Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act...remains a long shot due to its rabid pro-gun opponents.

...

While the bill remained a nonstarter, more than 2,000 suspects on the FBIs Terrorist Watchlist bought weapons in the U.S. over the last 11 years, according to the federal Government Accountability Office.

Ed.: And none of them actually committed any acts of terrorism, so maybe the NRA is right about due process?

Ohioans are passionate about their Second Amendment rights. This week the state house passed a bill that could change the concealed and carry law.

"Right now firearms are very restricted as far as schools are concerned, which is a good thing because you don't want just anyone carrying a firearm inside of a school," said Jamie Bear, vice president of Special Tactics and Rescue Training (START) in Mingo Junction.

Under current law, you're also not allowed to take a concealed weapon into daycare centers, colleges, or even private aircraft. But a bill that is moving to the State Senate would change that. Those in favor argue it would actually increase safety.

In the wake of the ISIS attacks on Paris, the NRA reposted one of its promo videos of TV host and Navy SEAL Marcus Lutrell, who apparently has a message for Islamic extremists who want to take his freedom.

The NRA provided the following description of what can charitably be described as the dumbest video in history:

In the days since the heinous terror attacks in Paris took 130 innocent lives and wounded hundreds more, Americans have flooded into gun stores to purchase new guns and sign up for concealed carry permit classes in their respective states.

And those buying guns include many who have never owned a gun before.

The New York Daily News had a colorful headline today accusing the National Rifle Association (NRA) of conducting a "sick jihad" for opposition to a proposed law, one the News asserts they are to blame for not passing, that would give the Attorney General carte blanche to deny both federal firearms dealer licenses and the ability to legally buy a weapon to pretty much anyone he chooses, under the rubric of those who give "material support" to terrorism and whom she believes is a threat.

In most states you can go to a gun show or buy a gun over the internet, without a background check and it just makes it easy for criminals and people who are dangerously ill to get firearms when they shouldn't. Hey, Im a gun owner. I own a lot of guns, Im a big supporter of the second amendment, the same time, I don't see why we can't make it harder for criminals to get guns, we should be able to do that, Kelly said.
Kelly says universal background checks have been adopted in eight states, and their organization Americans for Responsible Solutions is working with dozens of others.

Early in the morning the next day, I crafted a letter to the entire UT community and began sending the letter, one email at a time. I first sent copies to few members of the faculty of the College of Natural Science, then to colleague historians in Arlington, San Marcos, and College Station, where I had been invited to talk in the past. The letter came from the gut. It was a tirade. There was no logical justification for the presence of guns in MY office and classrooms, I argued. The rate of crime on campus was lower than that in our immediate vicinity.

The Blaze's Dana Loesch joined the NRA's media arm with the release of a commentary video that falsely and conspiratorially suggested that President Obama could require a family member who gives another family member a gun to register as a federally licensed firearm dealer and open their house to inspection by the government.

Loesch is now listed on the NRA News website as part of its commentators series, which the NRA describes as showcasing a "new generation of advocates and activists for the Second Amendment." She is also employed by Glenn Beck's conservative network The Blaze, hosts a nationally syndicated conservative radio show, and is a frequent guest on Fox News.

Violent crime in Brazil is out of control. In 2012, the latest year for which we have widely accepted figures, the World Health Organization estimated the national homicide rate at 32 deaths per 100,000 people, one of the highest in the world. In some regions criminal depredations are especially bad; the state of Alagoas featured a homicide rate more than double the national average.

Self-defense, as evidenced by the retrial of Raul Rodriguez that began Monday, often makes headlines and generally depends so heavily on specific fact patterns that it generally comes down to a judgment call by a jury or a grand jury.

In the case of Rodriguez, who was granted a retrial because the law on self-defense was not clear in the instructions that the jury received in his 2012 trial, his defense rests on the controversial law of "stand your ground."

Despite a similar House proposal that was previously killed, a bill to significantly change Floridas Stand Your Ground law is advancing in the Senate.

Donald Trump said on Wednesday that, if he or somebody else with a gun had been present during last Fridays attacks in Paris, things would have gone differently.

So they were just shooting people: Next! Next! the former reality TV star told Boston radio host Jeff Kuhner. Just people were totally defenseless. If you had a guy like you or me, or some other guys in that room that had guns, it wouldnt have been that way, Jeff. You know. It wouldnt have been that way.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution... The power to impose a license tax on the exercise of these freedoms is indeed as potent as the power of censorship which this Court has repeatedly struck down... a person cannot be compelled 'to purchase, through a license fee or a license tax, the privilege freely granted by the constitution.' MURDOCK V. PENNSYLVANIA 319 US 105 (1942)
