The 7x57R, a rimmed version of the 7x57mm, was introduced on the heels of the 7x57mm Mauser cartridge. The rim allowed the cartridge to be fired from the popular break action rifles used by hunters in the early 1900s. Mauser and the Spanish military had done extensive testing to develop and field the cartridge in the Model 1893 bolt action rifle. This made the 7x57R easy to market to hunters, since the cartridge was already established as accurate and effective.

Many of us remember Chris Cheng from the History Channels long-since-canceled show Top Shot. The show ran for five seasons, between 2010 and 2013, and featured two teams of competitors who had to use an unknown array of rifles, handguns and shotguns on various targets as they ran through shooting stations. One by one, the lowest-scoring marksmen were eliminated.

Shotguns are very effective arms for home defense, because their power far eclipses most handgun and many rifle rounds. A typical self-defense load, the 12-ga. 00 buckshot shell, has a muzzle energy 2.8 times that of a .44 Mag. from a 6 handgun barrel and 1.8 times that of the 5.56 NATO cartridge used by AR-15s, loaded with a 69-gr. bullet. Yes, shotguns loaded with anything but slugs have a very limited effective range, but they certainly hold sway at home-defense distances when using the proper loads.

Revolvers are definitely making a comeback. Once incredibly popular, they sort of lost favor to concealable single-stack and double-stack handguns over the last 30+ years. But just like fashion trends, whats old is new again, and that includes revolvers! You might be thinking a gun is a gun is a gun and wondering why gripping a revolver would be different than your semi-auto Glock pistol. Sure, theyre similar, and a lot of people use the same grip for both. But revolvers can have a variety of grips on them, and theyre often angled very differently from your run-of-the-mill Glock.

Gun safes rarely move after that Olympic weightlifting team squeezes it through your front door. Its ideal, intimidating and theres no doubt it deters everything except professional thieves with explosives training. Unfortunately, the monoliths dont fit in every home and the job market is more mobile than ever.

The first day of the 2021 deer hunting season may have been hampered by the weather, but not all hunters let it rain on their parade. The hunting day began early Saturday, a half-hour before sunrise. At Sabattus Deer Processing, the bagged deer, while few, nonetheless came in steadily, dragged from trucks and trunks and weighed. The operation has been a popular spot for hunters during its 22 years in business, only running during the season about two months total seven days a week.

Knives were a key part of our survival and success through time, especially when survival hinged on hunting and preparing food. How we use knives today comes down to more modern, albeit no less important, tasks. Still, one of the most primal and common uses remains hunting. Todays topic will focus on the definition and uses of a hunting knife. Well even include some of our favorite hunting blades from the Guns.com Vault.

Maine offers a lot of hunting opportunities; there are multiple seasons for big game, small game, upland birds and waterfowl for sportsmen and women to enjoy. Most outdoor folks participate in several shooting endeavors during spring and fall seasons, but most everyone has a favorite quarry. What people might not realize, or even think about, is the fact that ruffed grouse, partridge to most Mainers, is the most hunted game animal in the state.

Accuracy and speed are everything when it comes to precision competitions and shooting in the field. The Mark 5HD 5-25x scope is one of Leupolds premier optics, and it offers both of those capabilities in spades with a lot of extra features that have it hitting above its weight class for the price. We put this optic in the hands of experienced precision shooter and founder of the Mid-Atlantic Rimfire Series, Dave Luu, to see what he thought about it. After putting it to the test, hes sold on the optic and adding it to his personal lineup for precision shooting. Heres why.
