With "popular support" for a national ID system gaining ground, Congress once again is "being forced" to debate an idea it has rejected numerous times.

BUT-- At a House Government Reform subcommittee hearing on the matter today, Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), said Sept. 11 demonstrated that a national ID system would not have stopped the terrorist attacks. "The events of Sept. 11 show us that systems like national identification cards will not deter the crazed terrorist from his or her mission."

GOA Alerts -- legal theories attempted to outlaw both cigarettes and guns by arguing that manufacturers should be held liable for all adverse consequences stemming from misuse of those products.

Currently, the targets are tobacco companies. But gun dealers, manufacturers, and owners could just as easily be the victims of these lawsuits in the future.

ACTION: Write the Bush administration. Ask it to drop lawsuits against companies that use theories which could also outlaw gun ownership.

"It is commonplace to assume that toppling the Taliban will free Afghan women. But in an unstable country where soldiers celebrate conquest by raping and where there is currently no guarantee that whatever form of government eventually assumes control will not be equally oppressive toward females women have to protect themselves to remain free."

In the Nov. 12 Newsday, journalists Matthew McAllester and Ilana Ozernoy quoted a woman named Malika, a mother whose family lived on the Taliban front line of Bagram just north of Kabul.
