They've become a fixture in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan, a new breed of unmanned aircraft operated with remote controls by "pilots" sitting in virtual cockpits many miles away.
But the Air Force's Global Hawk has never flown a mission over the United States.
That is set to change Monday, when the first Global Hawk is scheduled to land at Beale Air Force Base in northern California. |

CHICAGO - A former high-ranking aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley was sentenced Monday to nearly four years in prison for covering up illegal patronage hiring at City Hall.
"The offense is corruption corruption with a capital C," U.S. District Judge David H. Coar told 43-year-old Robert Sorich. "For people to owe their jobs to political advancement rather than performance on the job stinks."
The judge added: "I don't give a hoot whether this has been going on for 200 years it still stinks."
Sorich and two other men were convicted July 6 in a scheme to make sure political campaign workers got city jobs and other applicants were frozen out.
Submitters Note: Business as usual. Any surprise here?

Police generally advise a passive approach when ordinary citizens must deal with a criminal. Hand over your wallet or purse, they say. Don't threaten them or fight them because they might turn more violent.
"Money and jewelry, even sentimental items, can be replaced," Streicher said. "Think about it before you risk your life to protect it. Our advice to the victim is let it go and call the police.
"We'll come. We'll find the bad guy."

MANCHESTER, N.J. -- A police officer who claimed he was conducting his own prostitution sting and strip search ended up being the one arrested.
Authorities arrested James Michael Jackson, a police officer with the state Department of Human Services, and charged him with sexual assault and sexual misconduct for the so-called sting.
According to authorities, Jackson, 34, of Toms River, arranged through a service for the woman to meet him Wednesday at a local hotel in Manchester.
As a police officer, Jackson had authority to make arrests, but not through an undercover operation of his own, Anton said.
"And a male to strip-search a female is just not done," he added. |

Seasonably mild and relatively pleasant conditions greeted hunters for the opening day of the 2006 Wisconsin nine-day gun deer season on Saturday. DNR hunter education administrator Tim Lawhern, stationed in Juneau County on Saturday, reported one shooting incident statewide. A 25-year-old woman in Ashland County received a self-inflicted non-fatal injury, Lawhern said. |

Officials are looking to make Beaverton the first Oregon city to ban replica guns in public areas. Beaverton police Chief David Bishop asked the city attorney's office to draft an ordinance that would ban airsoft guns, which resemble firearms but generally use compressed air to shoot plastic pellets. Most have a brightly colored plastic barrel tip to distinguish them from real weapons, though some users paint the tip to make it more closely resemble a real gun. |

In the 2000 Presidential race, a pro-gun George Bush defeated an anti-gun Al Gore. President Bill Clinton commented that the NRA cost Gore the Presidency. Gore's insistence that law abiding citizens should be denied their God-given right to self-defense or to own good firearms for hunting, collecting or competition did not make sense to millions of Americans that understand that guns are tools used for good far more often that evil.
A few Ohio candidates seemed to have missed that important lesson. It is clear that the gun vote turned several key races, including two prominent statewide races. |

The state Constitution explicitly says, "The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned." It's much better than the Second Amendment. But since the court ignores the text in its rulings in gun cases, it can and has allowed the government to establish rules about gun ownership, Ledewitz says.

Gun control does not work. Criminals obviously do not care about another law on the books and responsible people don't go around causing bloodbaths, as most liberals would have us believe. Washington, D.C., has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and it recently had to declare emergencies due to crime.
If Carpenter would put half of the effort into preaching about personal responsibility than he does into trying to take away my guns, then I believe the world would be a better place. |

The ACLU of Washington's lawsuit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Spokane, was brought on behalf of three individuals and the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation because of the rural library district's policy of refusing to disable Internet filters for adults. CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- A woman died Monday, less than 48 hours after she and her husband were shot while driving home to the cul-de-sac they share with former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Peggy Perez-Olivo, 55, was shot in the head, TV station WNYC reported. Her husband, Carlos, 58, was shot in the abdomen.
Both were admitted to Northern Westchester Hospital on Monday after the shooting late Saturday night on a desolate stretch of road in the nearby community of Millwood, according to police. Submitters Note: Westchester County, NY where it is almost impossible to get a handgun carry permit. |

For some residents in Racine and elsewhere, there was a perception that White's actions might have been extreme but understandable, given the circumstances. If you live where crime is always ready to appear on your doorstep, some people are willing to give you a break if a situation arises you feel compelled to deal with by any means possible.
After all, isn't that what all the fuss about concealed-carry gun laws is all about, anyway? |

Personal protection without access to the appropriate tools is a farce. Firearms, especially small, convenient to use handguns are the most effective tools for personal protection which is why police, guards, the military and gang bangers use them.
Thanks to former justice minister Allan Rock and his ilk, mainstream Canadians are the only ones NOT carrying firearms suitable for their defense. At least not legally, and for effective public policy legality is what counts – otherwise the law is brought into disrepute. |

No parent expects their gun to kill their child -- but it happens too often, said Dan Patterson, an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office. Patterson sees unsecured weapons lying around half the homes he enters. Adults keep them for protection from mountain lions, for instance, or from criminals, he said. But children see them as toys, and a shot fired in play will kill. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
...If a man lies under oath or procures the lie of another under oath, if he perjures himself or suborns perjury, he is guilty under the statute law. Under the higher law, under the great law of morality and righteousness, he is precisely as guilty if, instead of lying in a court, he lies in a newspaper or on the stump; and in all probability, the evil effects of his conduct are infinitely more widespread and more pernicious. Teddy Roosevelt - May 12, 1900 |
