... "The marks will be hustled and the snake oil supplies depleted (until they can make up a new batch for the next show). But here's what they'll be doing with the hidden hand as our attention is redirected by their stage moves and incantations: They'll make liberty disappear a little bit more. They'll reinforce the hypnotic suggestion that the average person is just too untrustworthy and incompetent to keep and bear arms, and that they, the ruling class and their enforcers, are the 'only ones' qualified to possess them." ...

"They may have been chased unceremoniously out of the state of Alabama, but ATF had not given up on finding their ten missing agents. Nor had they given up on finding Charlie Quintard. Barton Meigs' replacement as regional director of the ATF was everything AD Atherton could have wanted. This was probably because Atherton himself had hand-picked her."

"Dody Saako was just perfect for the job. She evinced a certain predisposition to the slavish obedience of orders, combined it with a vicious disdain for the legal niceties in carrying them out and possessed on top of it all an insatiable appetite for advancement. For Atherton's purposes, Dody Saako was just what the tyrant ordered." ...

Disarmament On The High Seas

"The piracy case in Somalia is a perfect example of victim disarmament at sea. Most merchant ships are forbidden by their countries' laws from having weapons on board (a ban which is enforced by rigorous inspections), which leaves a 20,000tn ship worth hundreds of million of dollars vulnerable to a pirate dinghy with a crew of five armed with AKs and RPGs worth a few hundred bucks. So do we allow owners to spend a few thousand dollars on weapons and private security on board? God forbid! No, much better to send a carrier group, or just nuke the high seas." ...

"I'm going to make a prediction, because I think a picture might be shaping up here. Given who Obama has nominated for his AG, and the things he said, I think we can expect gun shows, and in particular private sales, to be a prime target of the new administration. Why?"

"Gun shows are a locus of organization for the gun community. We'd be far weaker without them. ... If you're a recruiter or an activist, you go where the fishing is good, and the fishing is very good at gun shows."

"They are easily demonized. Few people have attended them, and the media has done an excellent job of making sure people think gun shows are a bunch of Nazi white-power types looking for a few extra boxes of grenades ..." ...

More thoughts on 'Fudds'

"There has been some argument in the comments over at Sebastian's about the use of the term 'Fudd.' As I stated in a previous post, I think using the term is counterproductive, at best. This does not mean, as some have suggested, that I give the hunters, or any other gun owners, who do not support our rights a pass. I just think that the name calling is particularly helpful, especially with something so easily misunderstood or twisted as 'Fudd.'"

"One of the glaring problems with using 'Fudd' is that there is nothing to indicate that the original is anything but a caricatured dumb hunter. He isn't working to ban EBRs, or any of the other things that people use to define a 'Fudd.' ..." ...

"On the last date of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 spring session, justices declared by a 5-4 decision in D.C. v. Heller that, yes, the Second Amendment does secure an individual right to keep and bear arms. With that, the high court voided the District of Columbias extreme regulations on gun ownership, which had amounted in practice to a complete ban on any usable weapon for self-protection ..."

"In retrospect, D.C. v. Heller seems almost inevitable, because of shifting public and academic attitudes toward gun rights. But victory came only after a protracted struggle, with many pitfalls along the way. It was pulled off by a small gang of philosophically dedicated lawyersnot 'gun nuts' in any stereotypical sense ..." ...

"Today's headline may indeed be tomorrow's distant memory, but the accidental shooting death last month of 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj was a story that should not be easily forgotten."

"Bizilj was the Ashford, Conn. youngster who died as a result of a 'machine gun shoot' held at a Western Mass. gun club." ...

"Immediately after the tragic accident, John Rosenthal, founder of a non-profit called Stop Handgun Violence (but also a gun owner himself), said that a loophole in the federal assault weapons ban needed to be plugged, so that a specific age limit for handling such a weapon is on the books." ...

Fear of a Black Prez and Crazy White Folks with Guns

"What the hell is wrong with white people? Numerous media reports of late have detailed a run on gun stores by crazed crackers who believe the new black President-elect will take their firearms away shortly after he's sworn in. In a piece for the Republic this week that echoed similar stories by the national press, an Apache Junction gun store owner said of the boom, 'the day after the election, it was more than Y2K ...'"

"He went on to claim that his customers are, 'normal people, not kooks.' I beg to differ. Likely these nuts already have more than one gat in their homes, and here they are stockpiling more and more, as if they're readying themselves for Armageddon. Of course, in their minds, some of them may be doing just that." ...

"Hope and change may be at an all-time high in America right now, but so is something else - gun sales."

"In the lead-up to this month's presidential election, a jarring statistic caught my eye. October 2008 saw a 49 percent increase in gun license sales over October 2007. People have the fundamental right to own guns. But it should be so difficult to own a gun in this country and regulations should be so tight that only qualified people can get them into their hands."

"In the last few months, not only have gun sales shot up across the country, but our own home city was forced to strike down legislation that restricted gun sales." ...

"'People are afraid they're going to put the ban back in,' the Randy's employee said."

"According to factcheck.org, Barack Obama intends to 'revive and make permanent' the ban that expired in 2004, which outlawed 19 kinds of semi-automatic weapons."

"The AR-15, a semiautomatic rifle gun owners can buy that's similar to the fully automatic M-16 used by the military, is one of the weapons that are now out of stock. The run on the gats happened the day after Nov. 4, 2008 ..."

"A homeowner interrupting a burglary in progress late last week morning opened fire on the intruder as the burglar approached him and his wife, Alaska State Troopers said."

"The burglar was not hit by the shots but did sustain minor injuries when he 'went through the window' while fleeing the home, troopers said. Responding officers brought in a dog and tracked down a suspect, Bowen Alexander, 18, a short distance from the home, troopers said."

"Troopers say Alexander had been drinking when he crashed his vehicle, broke into a home and entered the homeowner's vehicle. For reasons that were not immediately clear, Alexander then fled to the neighboring home, where the homeowner shot at him, troopers said. " ...

"The HopeandChange Anti-Gun Dream Team keeps getting bigger and 'better,' with the newest addition being Arizona's Governor Janet Napolitano as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. What's her stance on guns?"

"Well, in 2007, she vetoed Arizona SB 1302, which would have made Arizona's 'Stand Your Ground' law retroactive. This could have made the difference for Harold Fish, who is serving a prison sentence for second degree murder ... Napolitano said that her veto came out of concerns that reopening all the cases that could be affected by the change in law would overburden the court system. That makes sense--we certainly wouldn't want to give innocent people a chance to get out of prison if doing so would be inconvenient." ...

... "Senators in the Student Government Association are having their own discussion about the right to bear arms. The argument is between those who believe people who have licenses for concealed weapons should be able to carry arms on campus and those who disagree. SGA hopes to reach a census and gather opinions from both for and against the issue to recommend to the Georgia Legislature."

"The debate was sparked by Georgia House Bill 89, which regards carrying concealed arms in extended public places but does not yet extend to college campuses. The council is still considering adding a provision allowing those licensed individuals to carry concealed arms on campuses." ...

... "... Yesterday we had our brigade level equal opportunity inspection. ... I and others do have mixed feelings about the EO program; it has both improved understanding within the ranks, but has also, for example, defined as 'hate-symbols' common designs like the Presbyterian cross or the Islamic crescent. The inspection included a 'focus group session' where a number of staff officers were interviewed in a group session. While most of the questions were straight forward and professional, I was taken about when the inspectors asked if anyone had been upset about the race of President-elect Obama. While racial prejudice is unacceptable, I can't imagine the inspectors asking a similar question about McCain, or any of the other presidential candidates." ...

"It's a sad day when a county sheriff shows as much disdain for individual liberties as Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has shown in her pursuit of ham-fisted policies regarding concealed-carry permits for firearms. On Tuesday, the board of supervisors voted unanimously to call on the sheriff to loosen up her policies and allow wider latitude in granting permits to residents who say they need the permits."

"Although Sheriff Hutchens was appointed by the board six months ago, she is under no obligation to follow the new instructions. At least the board spoke out on behalf of the gun-rights-supporting public, as more than 80 activists spoke out against the sheriff's policies during the board meeting. ..." ...
